Metal music has some great things man! Have you heard the Malmsteen concert for guitar ? it´s awesome. Guitar + orchestra + classical variations
It´s not about all about death metal (and there are even some great death metal songs too)

are you kidding me? this is the stupidest shit I've seen in a long time. If you want rules for the kiddies go back to the cartoon forum. Here, we like to talk about shit. Pro or con. Funny, I only came in here because I saw Vendetta was the last one to post and I was like, man...what the fuck is she doing in that metal thread? Now I'm in here, looking around, and I must admit it's a pretty comfortable thread, despite me not having heard a metal track in as long as I can remember.
You guys need to jump in the Mixtape thread, add a song. Since Vol 2 isnt close to being full, it looks like it will have the harder songs on it.

Im with you all the way. I mean I used to listen a lot of metal when I had 15! I used to love manowar
"heavy metal or no metal at all..whimps and posers leave the hall"
I grow up and expand my musical tastes.. but metal has a lot of great musicians in it. Manowar lyrics sucks... but a lot of metal bands are great... it´s not all dope headbangins idiots (Alice in chains for example, excellent music, and excellent lirycs)
I think that every music genre has cool exponents on it. you can´t generalize. It´s pretty dumb
If there´s one music genre to despise that´s reggaton (the exception that confirms the rule)
i bought opeth's "ghost reveries" and dimmu borgir's "in sorte diaboli" the other day. i got ghost reveries because i had heard a few of the songs on the album, previously. i have to say, its amazing.
as for dimmu's new album: i had no idea they even put one out. had i not gone to borders and been looking for "spiritual black dimensions," i may have never known.
during the car ride home, we (big derek, levithetall, zakthekyke, and ruwepot) listened to "in sorte diaboli" at full blast- right before the speakers break.
the first track begins as most dimmu cds do. a beautiful landscape is painted through an orchestrated symphony- of course, written by shagrath and silenoz. hellhammer breaks into the gothenburg philharmonic with a battle snare. the whole cd slams into you, song after song, until that one calm in track five, just so you can enjoy the storm even more. the guitars and bass compliment eachother perfectly, while the drums continuously beat your ears to a bloody pulp. shagraths rasp spews out lyrics that boggle the mind with truths. anywho. enough of my review.
go buy in sorte diabloli.

necrophagist and cephalic carnage are amazing bands to bring up. i really like the shuttle riffs- the ones that take off and stop on a dime, then take off again in a completely new direction. i dont know how any band (let alone guitar player) can maintain the patience to play songs like "lucid interval" and "only ash remains."
by the way, check those out, anyone that hasnt heard them.

EDIT: Wait, he took the back part of the stock off his gun, negating some of the utility.

God, I had a big reply to this thread and you typed out but the net screwed up and I lost it so this post won't have much substance. I don't think Opeth is a very amazing band, I think they basically reuse what originality they had over and over. They play what they want which is cool but from the way people talk about them you'd expect to hear a big amazing band playing music that will shake the very foundation of music. And it's obviously not their fault for the fans... I don't diss a band just cuz of fans cuz then I'd hate my favourite band.
I don't hate Opeth. I like them. I own Blackwater Park and it's the only album I need unless they decide to completely change and play like, hip hop polka metal. It's just that they're a guitar based metal band and I don't find them overly interesting.
Anyway, maudlin of the Well are one of my favourite metal bands but they're gone now and Kayo Dot took their place. Mastodon is cool. Mayhem. Acid Bath. Neurosis. Yeah.
Will post for food.

i wouldnt say that ghost reveries is all too original at all. "grand conjuration's" opening riff and "ghost of perdition" are the only songs on the whole album that sound new.
aside from the lack of originality, the recording was great. the mixing was done perfectly to get just the right amount of ooomph, while retaining dynamics and range. the growling (as with all opeth) are phenominal, while the clean vocals i find to be lacking, but add a nice touch. im spoiled by vortex's work off dimmu's new album.
i will say that mikael akerfeldt has gotten way better on the guitar since blackwater park. hes playing faster, harder, more precisely, and more intricate work. his tone has changed quite a bit as well. he has a much more organic tone than before. i like it.
as for drums, while i havent ever spent all too much time pondering them, the drumwork is very jazzy and steady, which i like a lot. one of my favourite drummers is joey jordison (i know, slipknot sucks, but you can hear him with glenn benton of deicide and some guys from testament on roadrunner united), because he has some of the steadiest beats that ive ever heard that have this nifty splashy feel.
anywho, enough of this today.

first off, why would anyone even bother coming into any thread where the topic was something they didn't enjoy and feel the need to tell people that they don't enjoy it? are you that fucking important? no you're not. so shut the fuck up and stop being a baby. other forums I post on you get banned for being an idiot troll.
anyway, I just last saw cannibal corpse and behemoth a few weekends ago. really good show. red chord also played who is probably my favorite band to see live. I like death metal but I guess metalcore or tech metal is my favorite genre. too many too list.
willxcore, who were you referring to? Me? Because I don't even hate Opeth like I said, but I don't worship them. I can find flaws in things. I didn't troll, me and aphonicmessiah are having a conversation about Opeth, aren't we? Neither one of us are angry or anything.
And of course aphonicmessiah you can think what you want about how they sound, I just wanted to comment on the wankfest that I've seen (not from you), that's all. Their production is usually good, they had Steven Wilson producing some of the albums anyway and he's awesome. I don't really see anything special about the guitar work though, or their drumming, or really anything, though Mikael can sing. Just seems like every metal band is really guitar based (same goes with a lot of other genres as well), and some variety is nice.
Slipknot doesn't suck. But I'm not getting into a big Slipknot argument on this board because it always happens no matter where I go. Joey is an amazing drummer though, agreed. He has actual technique and doesn't resort to blast beats every second to try to make them sound heavy.

well, i guess i'll argue with you. SLIPKNOT SUCKS!
I am going to see Testament in July with Amon Amarth. I am excited as fuck. I have been waiting for Testament to come around for years now, since I saw them on the Metal Gods tour in 2003. They are amazing...and Amon Amarth is great too.
That's my contribution.
Oh...maybe I'll go see Symphony X too. And I'm going to see Dream Theater/Into Eternity in July also...I forgot about that.
That is all.

I would think someone who liked both classical and metal would be more into power and or prog metal than "mainstream" black metal. Dragonforce, Rhapsody, Symphony X, etc.
