Any UFC/Pride Fans?
My internet went down lastnight in the middle of the Sherdog play-by-play and it came back up just now. I checked Sherdog right away, and HOT DAMN! Im happy.
Im glad Serra won, I like both guys, but Serras deserves this and Im so glad that Koscheck shot down that little bastard Diego.
Now I gotta go DL this shit.
I'd like you to tell me that you are a false prophet and that God is a superstition.
Cant forget about DSE's last Pride show, Pride 34.
# Yoshihiro Nakao defeated Edson Drago in R1 by submission.
# Butterbean defeated Zuluzinho in R1 by submission.
# Makoto Takimoto defeated Zelg Galesic in R1 by submission.
# Gilbert Yvel defeated Akira Shoji in R1 by TKO at the 3′46 mark (strikes on the ground).
# James Thompson defeated Don Frye in R1 by referee stoppage
#Shin’ya Aoki defeated Brian Lo-A-Njoe in R1 in 93 seconds with arm scissors (or armbar, pick your terminology)
#Sokoudjou defeated Ricardo Arona in early R1 by KO. That was a quick stoppage by the referee. On replay, it looked fine to stop the fight (two punches and then a soccer kick)
#Jeff Monson defeated Kazuyuki Fujita in R1 with a choke sleeper hold.
The fighters then picked up Sakakibara and started throwing him in the air. A graphic in English displayed, “The final show under Dream Stage Entertainment” with footage of the Roppongi Hills Arena press conference meeting shown during the credits in English. Outtakes were shown including Sokoudjou watching animals mating at a zoo. In the post-show commentary, Sakakibara joined the commentating team again to reflect on PRIDE. They put over PRIDE’s Lightweight GP 2007 show on 5/20 at Saitama Super Arena. And the show closed with a graphic - 2007 Dream Stage Entertainment Inc.

Are you serious? Where was this?
Three cheers for violence.
Are you serious? Where was this?
our boxing school is in mineola ny... matt grew up in my neighborhood, i've been training at his school for @ 5 yrs. its about to get real crowded in that motherfucker.
So how does that go from where you're at to fighting in UFC? A few guys we're connected to in MN fought a few lackluster UFC battles, and one of my best friends holds the MN 155 belt, trains with Sherk at those guys from time to time.

Nick Diaz’s Win Over Takanori Gomi Ruled a No-Contest
Nick DiazFormer UFC fighter Nick Diaz’s upset victory over PRIDE Fighting Championships’ lightweight champion Takanori Gomi in a recent non-title fight has been ruled a no-contest because of his failed drug test, according to MMAWeekly.com.
Diaz, who scored a submission victory via gogoplata over Gomi at PRIDE 33, tested positive for marijuana in his post-fight drug test at the February event. Today, the Nevada State Athletic Commission erased the win from his record and also suspended Diaz for six months from the date of his fight and fined him $3,000.
Diaz had earned $15,000 for the fight.
The severity of the punishment resulted largely from the NSAC’s belief that Diaz was under the influence of the drug the night of the fight, which according to the NSAC’s chair commissioner (in a awkward-sounding statement), helped him dull pain and assisted in the win.
According to MMAWeekly.com:
Alamo went on to say, “Mr. Diaz was 175. This creates a unique situation. I was there at this fight and believe that you were intoxicated and… that it made you numb to the pain. Did it help you win? I think it did.”

This thread dead already?
Just finished watching UFC 69, most of the fights where pretty boring esp. dirty sanchez vs kos. I got a little choked up when Serra got his belt! Interesting reaction from Hughes.
Big Nog in UFC now is a great thing for the HW div!
I'd like you to tell me that you are a false prophet and that God is a superstition.
Couldn't the counter-argument be made that Takanori should have been able to beat a man who was stoned off his ass(more than triple the limit?)? If he was feeling less pain, that would mean his senses were dulled. All of them. So he shouldn't have been as agile, quick, reactive, etc, I'd think.
Odd.
Fear the terror.
You are officially the only person I know that predicted that match. What say you on Arlovski vs Werdum?
The NSAC are morons and why test for a drug that doesnt improve performance? who cares if some fighters are stoners? Im sure it helps to get high after your body has taken a beating.
I'd like you to tell me that you are a false prophet and that God is a superstition.
Atleast this season of TUF isnt turning out like shit, good fights so far. Still some douchebags in the house of course.
You are officially the only person I know that predicted that match. What say you on Arlovski vs Werdum?
Hmm... I haven't seen the pre-fight teasers yet so I can't give you a concrete decision. Much like Diego my undefeated streak is hanging heavy around my neck. I fear a mis step. To date I've never been wrong on a fight and I have also never bet my own $. Werdum lost to big NOG which isn't surprising although he has bested some other serious opponents. Right now I'm leaning toward Arlovski out of love and experience but wonder how being forced to deal with a route that is not leading back to his title will wear on his appetite. If I were Arlovski I'd be shit pissed that I had to bother with big skinny and Werdum instead of getting the next shot at Randy. Or at the very least they should feed Andre to Crocop so there's a legit ascension rather than hand Crocop the belt straight out.
I'll give you the skinny as soon as I see some countdown footage.
Three cheers for violence.

Nice, you're a tall MF, atleast next to him.

Awesome dude. Totally fucking awesome. This is the first time I've participated in a Cult thread and not felt like everyone used English as a second language. Please let Matt know that he's a real inspiration to some of us. Just seeing him with feels me with a sense of pride, it's weird. He's the only UFC guy that I'd describe as a legit "hero." As a matter of fact he might want to relinquish that monkey's paw of a belt real quick because I'm coming for it.
In non sanctioned fight news I beat the living hell out of some guy at work tonight who outweighed me by roughly 25 lbs. and was much taller, wouldn't leave the parking lot, same old shit. The third punch knocked him out of his shoes, literally. By the end of 2 minutes he had to go to the hospital. Funniest thing was I fought him according to cage rules, it just came naturally. He was very luck I didn't revert to street fight tactics cause knees to the head HURT!
My knuckles are sorta sore.
Three cheers for violence.

so your a bouncer, or what?
a brawl broke out at our local bar last night....i got behind one guy and tried to grab him out of the frackas with a rear naked, and wanted to choke his ass out SO fucking bad but i was wearing a sportscoat that was a bit too small so i couldn't put any pressure on it so i ended up just dragging him by his neck...i split my coat down the middle, chris farley style.
In a manner of speaking. I am one of two night employees at a very busy liquor store. My job pretty much exploits me. I've been waiting for day shifts for 2 years while they keep hiring more single mothers who can't lift boxes and give them the shifts I want.
Unfortunately these things happen and for no apparent reason other than someone can't handle their alcohol and watches too much TV. Last night's was a complete mystery. We have no ide why this young man wanted to fight me, but he did, badly, and found out it was a bad idea.
His wigger friend kept talking shit too, while his much larger buddy was swiftly turned into the Phantom of the Opera, and he even said "We can handle this shit in a UFC ring." I stopped, smiled and asked, "Is that really want you want? To be trapped in a cage with me? While all your friends watch you beg for mercy?"
His mouth kept moving but his feet moved backwards. Shitty part is I think I broke both my hands in several places. Just didn't take a deep breath and visualize the punches ahead of time, everything moved so fast, and I forgot to pack my fists. The second punch literally knocked him out of his shoes, I had to throw them at him when he finally left. I can't even jerk off.
Three cheers for violence.
that sucks...it only gonna get worse when it comes time to wipe your ass.

Pretty much, from $3,000 to $350,000. Though a few years ago Mark Colman got 500k in Pride and also a japanese fighter got about 900k in Pride.
UFC doesnt pay as much. but Zuffa, who owns UFC owns Pride now.
Cro Crop who just got knocked out tonight, got 350k at his first fight in the UFC. 350k just to fight.
A lot of the big name guys fight fulltime with no day job, you can see why.
I'd like you to tell me that you are a false prophet and that God is a superstition.
that ain't too bad of a gig
except for the lack of health insurance
They are all fully insured, well atleast for fights. Outside, im sure a lot of them can afford it on their own just fine.
The nevada state athletic commission are pretty strict on MMA.
You get a full physical before you are givin the okay to fight etc. There have been 2 deaths in MMA, but they where underground and the fighters had preexisting problems.

But that kick, while not exactly telegraphed, wasn't coming out of left field. And Crocop drops his guard and seems to know it's coming. Was he drunk or something? I guess he bought on the hand fake a little, but yeesh. I don't have cable, what was his pre-fight like? Did he look sharp? I'm totally baffled by this...
He looked fine before hand. I think he did take it lightly, plus he wasnt aggressive.

how closely regulated is this stuff? wouldn't have been a fixed fight could it?
also, I thought these things were big deals on pay-per-view?
I saw it was playing on FoxSports earlier
They are, the UFC/MMA is getting so mainstream that its like anyother sport now. They have quite a few deals on espn, fsn etc. not just the UFC either.
No, it wouldnt be a fixed fight. Shit like that just happens, thats what makes it interesting. anything could happen.

I had always thought ppv was were the big money was at though. That's where that vince macmahon and his wrestling got to be billionaires from. I guess as it's popularity grows though they might get more money from a network contract like baseball or football
I didn't lay down any predictions on this one so "the system" stands. If I had I'd have simply bet on the smart man's money, which would have lost my money.
Crocop crumbles. Wowo. No one saw that coming. Not even him!
Notice that Dana White didn't even enter the octagon? Wonder why? Because he's so fucking pissed that his new start got passed over, definitively, by some monster faced non-english speaking beast. That last thing White wants is 2 UFC belts around the waists of guys who can't even speak to the crowd they're supposed to be drawing. UFC might be int rouble.

compare their paydays to pro boxers paydays and their getting robbed.
you also can get a bonus for things like winning "fight of the night" and "knockout/submission of the night"....in ufc 69, KO of the night was worth 25k.

No use in being a Monday morning quarterback. But no, I would not have called it based on the hoody.
I did, however, create a theory.
Pride functions very differently from UFC in a couple of important aspects. One is the energy in the arena and the other is the pace. Pride has long rounds and as a result you often see these fights start slower whereas in UFC 3 5 minute rounds tend to move from the get go (there are some exceptions, recent Arlovski, Sylvia, etc.). So perhaps Pride veterans, with MANY fights under their belt simply don't take this into consideration when they prepare for a UFC match. The other aspect, the crowd, is an issue whether you choose to admit it or not. I generally see Pride fans, at least early on, patiently watching. UFC is a fucking madhouse, and with a guy like Crocop who is used to picking his punches and setting the pace in a relatively calm environement this might force an uneasiness. I mean look at him last night, awful, the whole time, awful.
Three cheers for violence.

Thats a pretty good point, Mad. I never thought of that.
I would like to see the UFC adopt the Yellow cards for inactivity, thats one thing I liked about Pride, you got 10% taken from your purse if you dont press the action, no one wants to pay to see stalemates.
I'd like you to tell me that you are a false prophet and that God is a superstition.
If you saw how little the UFC guys are getting paid you might change your mind. Well, little when compared to boxing. I did see my enemy Herb Dean threaten to take points away for inactivity during the lackluster Arlovski fight which I thought was a good idea.
I'm very interested in the burgeoning 155 division the UFC seems to be cultivating. That's where I feel competitive although I don't forsee anyone taking that belt away from Sherk anytime soon.
Three cheers for violence.
I know how little they get paid (see further above), but im sure they can come up with something to light a fire under their asses. Taken away points is a step in the right direction I suppose.
I'd like you to tell me that you are a false prophet and that God is a superstition.
Agreed.
Three cheers for violence.
i don't watch a lot of pride, but i remember hearing about how they would give out those yellow cards in very questionable situations and the accusation was made that the refs were being told to give them out like candy so the org. could make back $$ from the purses.
Tito really is an ass.
Serra by firts round KO. Shocked the world.

Now here's the skinny. Serra won't be able to stave off Hughes, Hughes wont be able to stave off Koscheck but the outcome is up in the air, and we've got GSP on a return rampage to consider who is always more dangerous when he's got something to prove and also needs to move out of his parent's house. Welterweight division, as always, the UFC's most exciting division.
