any good foriegn film recommendations? ( I'm a United Statian so foriegn to me please :p )
Time Crimes. It's Mexican, or maybe Spanish. I dunno. Definitely foreign, although you're in LA so maybe it doesn't count. Still an awesome movie, though.
United Statian. I feel dumb when I say I'm an "American" because I live in the States. But anyways, yeahh what's the name of that film, Tuffy?
*note* This is a list of foreign films not foreign speaking films

Alcoholism is the cure not the disease.
Most of those are pretty good, though I think Run Lola Run is overrated. Still fairly entertaining, though. Also check out Das Experiment, starring the same guy in Run Lola Run. It's pretty awesome.
Mar adentro is awesome. It's Spanish and it deals with human euthanasia.
I'm a United Stalleon haha
*Y Tu Mama Tambien (REALLY MAKES YOU THINK)
*Run Lola Run
*Audition (scary but awesome)
*Dancer in the Dark (Not exactly a foreign film but it was filmed out of the US and only had one American actor)
Well, I would go for Let the Right One In (Swedish) or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (also Swedish). I don't believe you will go wrong with either of them. Audition (Japanese) is another great film. It's director, Takashi Miike, is one of my favorites.
Slumdog Millionaire is a British film, it was financed in Britain, produced, edited, and the director is British. Just because it was filmed and based around India, and has an Indian cast, doesn't make it a Indian film.

No love for the Chinese cinema?
Farewell my Concubine
Raise the Red Lantern
The Emperor and the Assassin
(It is entirely possible I have an unending love for Gong Li)
Also, sorry to hear your'e in Bakersfield. Spent 15 years there... you can find all three of those at the Blockbuster on Stockdale and California.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
Synecdoche, New York (Kaufmanese)
?????? I thought he said foreign films?
"The rat inside your brain rules the world."
Citizen Kane SUCKED!!!!!!! True fact.

I have no idea what country these are from - but they're foreign and really good.
Tale of Two Sisters
Life is Beautiful
Life is Beautiful is Italian. Also, one of my favorite Chinese films is Pink Butterfly, with Zhang Ziyi. She is a Chinese actress playing a Japanese spy pretending to be Chinese during the Japan invasion of China. Or something like that. Its a really slow movie, with very little dialogue, but its unbelievably beautiful, and it has one of my absolute favorite cinematic moments in it.
Ooo. Life is beautiful reminded me:
Johnny Stecchino! Love Roberto Benigni!
Synecdoche, New York (Kaufmanese)
?????? I thought he said foreign films?
Uh, yeah. Last I checked, Synecdoche, New York was made on Planet Kaufman and entirely in Kaufmanese.
(IT'S A JOKE--just not a very good one.)
Korean film from a few years back..

"Undaunted, I knew the game was mine to win. Just like in life, all of my successes depend on me. I'm the man who has the ball, I'm the man who can throw it faster than fuck. So that is why I am better than everyone in the world. Kiss my ass and suck my dick. Everyone."

I did enjoy Amores Perros very much.
Abre los Ojos is good which is the original 'Vanilla Sky'.
Sex and Lucia with Paz Vega.
Don't tempt me with Penelope Cruz.
Cinema Paradiso (Italian).
There are a few others I just don't know the names to. I recommended one to Berto about these people stuck in a room who have to solve several riddles in order to survive I just can't think of the name.
Synecdoche, New York (Kaufmanese)

I completely second Abre Los Ohos and Oldboy. They're pretty fantastic.
Shogun Assassin (Japanese) Pretty old but it's great!
Ichi the Killer (Japanese) Fantastic film, for reals.
Tetsuo: The Iron Man (Japanese) Fucked up movie, but mega awesome.
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (watch after Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy)
Switchblade Romance (French)(may be called 'High Tension' in the US)
2046 (Hong Kong)
Pulse (Japanese)
Vital (Japanese)
Nightmare Detective (Japanese)
Zatiochi (Japanese)
Detective Story (Japanese)
Visito Q (Japanese)
'Suicide Club' and the sequel 'Noriko's Dinner Table'(Japanese)
Avalon (Japanese/Polish)
The Host (Korean)
Little Otik (Czech)
'The Eye' and the sequels 'The Eye 2' and 'The Eye Infinity' (Japanese)
Code 46 (British)
Dead Man Walking (British)
It's All Gone Pete Tong (British)
Sexy Beast (British)
Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother)(Spanish)
Glue (Argentina)
The Science of Sleep (French)
Ghost in the Shell (Japanese) This one's probably the only anime I like.
Well I ain't sure but I've been told,
He's baking cakes inside our souls.
Oh, I can't believe I forgot about Suicide Club! Great movie.
Did you really like Visitor Q? That was the one movie by Takashi Miike that I didn't like.
I really thought Visitor Q was one of Miike's better films, although I find few people that agree with me
It's pretty extreme by anyone's standards, but it has some serious dark comedy too, and any movie that insane and unforgettable I hold in pretty high regard
Asian cinema is notorious for strange films and some level of shock value, but I find this one stands out more than most.
Suicide Club was awesome
The sequel is definitely worth a watch too if you haven't seen it.
Well I ain't sure but I've been told,
He's baking cakes inside our souls.
I just watched an Australian movie called 'Candy', it's about a heroin junkie and his heroin junkie girlfriend. Good film, depicts the deterioration of their relationship, pretty sad. Heath Ledger's in it.
Well I ain't sure but I've been told,
He's baking cakes inside our souls.
I'm digging this movie from Spain called "Little Ashes". It has that guy from Twilight in it and it's surprising to see him do a role like this. He plays the gay lover to one of the people who was in the forefront of the Spanish revolution. Something like that? I could be wrong.
It's in English though.
Also another good one is this little Canadian movie called Lie With Me. It's about this girl who equates love with sex and is basically a total slut until she meets this tall, dark, and sexy as hell guy who is all about monogamy. He throws her whole life out of whack and it's cool to see her grow.
Another cool thing about it is that the man is normal size (His package I mean, which is odd for somebody on film because it's actually not impressive at all and looks like it's in fact, smaller than the average bear. Which I guess is supposed to reassure the viewer that he is a normal guy who is vulnerable and just like you) and the sex scenes are very realistic. He seems to have trouble going for longer than a minute but that adds to the realism. If you want you could view it as a semi porno but the movie has really cool character development.
A loooooooooooooot of sex and nudity but as I said it's a good film if you watch it for the story and the acting.
It's also in English.
Another good one is Gods And Monsters. It's about this guy who's father is dying of cancer and he looks to a heroin dealer to help him with his pain. A relationship is formed and the old man eventually becomes an addict out of the deal.
It's in French Canadian but has subtitles.
Of course mainstays like Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz are always great choices!
I used to live at the alternative cinema here in Denver and for some reason I'm at a loss right now for other foreign films... I'll think of some more, but in the mean time you could find these movies on almost any torrent site or through Amazon. You'll need an all region player though.
Great flick. One of my favorites.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?
I downloaded it. The story caught my attention already, but Heath Ledger is a major plus.
Great flick. One of my favorites.
hells yeah.
i had a post recommending a bunch of good aussie films, but computer went shit, so, yeah. maybe later.
Ooh I'd like to see your recommendations
I haven't seen too many Aussie movies, apart from the obvious ones like Mad Max, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Wolf Creek, Crocodile Dundee.
I was trying to think of some good Irish movies, managed to come up with a few:
The Commitments
Breakfast on Pluto
The General
The Butcher Boy
Also some Irish history movies, Michael Collins and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. The latter I greatly prefer, but it has some really bad acting, so be warned. I don't feel this greatly detracts from the movie though, it's just something that you notice. It's an independent film with a much lower budget than Michael Collins, with an entirely Irish cast. Some of it was filmed in my hometown actually, and a lot of the actors are just locals, haha..
Historically it's pretty interesting, and there's some brutal depictions of how the Irish republicans were treated by the British army during the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. Cillian Murphy is in it too, as he's from Cork and that's where the movie is set and filmed.
I enjoyed it because of its simplicity, and because for a change it's a sympathetic look at Irish republicans and shows that the IRA weren't always idiotic tyrants. Also, it's refreshing to hear real Irish accents for a change, accents I hear on a daily basis, besides having an American/English actor making a relatively failed attempt to imitate one. I know they try, but they never quite get it right! lol
Well I ain't sure but I've been told,
He's baking cakes inside our souls.
well: The Black Balloon. i can't say enough good things about this movie. so emotional.
i made a post a while back with a bunch of short films from an australian short film contest called Tropfest. there was some great shit in there, but no one was into it.
america fuckyeah!
I'll acquire The Black Balloon during the week when I have time, I looked it up and it looks good!
I had a quick look at the Tropfest website, I'll try to find some of those movies too. Are there any specific ones that are good or will I just look at the winning ones?

check out my first post in this thread. it's my four favourites from last year. i didn't really like that many from this year. not like these ones. i adored each one of these films.
Anything and everything by Werner Herzog.
Candy was the movie where I finally decided Geoffrey Rush was one of the greatest actors I've ever seen. Even when he's in a shitty movie, he's jaw-dropping awesome in it! Not that Candy is a shitty movie or anything, but, you know...
Has anyone mentioned A Very Long Engagement yet? That's an awesome movie!
The Commitments
Breakfast on Pluto

The Butcher Boy

I second The General, and would add Bloody Sunday.
On the other hand I don't share your opinion that the IRA is mistreated in films. Hollywood has always been sympathetic to them, often beyond reason.

Michael Collins and The Wind that Shakes the Barley
Dig 'em both (but Barley much more), and I really like how they compare: Michael Collins, with its slick polish and A-List actors, focuses on the personalities in the upper echelons of the Irish resistance; whereas The Wind that Shakes the Barley, with its workaday craftsmanship and cast of (mostly) unknowns, is concerned with boots-on-the-ground viscera.
On the other hand I don't share your opinion that the IRA is mistreated in films. Hollywood has always been sympathetic to them, often beyond reason.
Aye, that's true but I didn't mean in film. I probably could have worded it better. I just meant general opinion of Irish republicans, not the IRA itself.
The IRA's more recent actions deserve no sympathy, of course, but they weren't always like that and this movie portrays that they were once simply retaliating and fighting for a valid cause.
All they do now is bomb shit and kill innocent people for no reason. Fucktards.
Well I ain't sure but I've been told,
He's baking cakes inside our souls.

yeah, true. but let's be honest, the thread was never really about giving him suggestions, was it? it was really about all of us tooting our horns and proving how knowledgable and cultured we are. wasn't it?
Here's the first part of Coup de Torchon (Clean Slate, Bertrand Tavernier, 1981). The following parts are also available (all subtitled).
How good is the film ? Well I like it so much that I sent the DVD to Derek.

you're a united what?
