Any ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead fans out there?
Sometimes called Trail of Dead for short, this Texas-based band kicks ass. They've had a couple albums out, including "Madonna" and "Source Tags and Codes" and just came out with a new one, "Worlds Apart," which I haven't gotten yet but want to. Some people are quick to label this band "emo," which I think is bullshit because I think "emo" greatly mislabels this group, let alone the fact that I hate the term "emo."
I got into this band a couple years ago when a friend of mine and I were driving to the Metro in Chicago for a show. He played "Source Tags" for me in his car and asked me if I heard these guys. He then said they're playing the Metro a couple nights later and wanted to know if I wanted to go. I passed for some stupid reason and haven't been able to catch them live since. "Source Tags and Codes" is an amazing album; songs like "It Was There That I Saw You" have a clean riff going for a few seconds, then just kick into noisy chord-strumming, and then back to a quiet, crawling melody, all within the first minute or two of the song. Other songs like "Another Morning Stoner" and "How Near, How Far" are just catchy as hell and rock, for lack of better terms.
If you guys like this band, post it here and show your appreciation loud and proud. If not, do yourself a favor and check these guys out, they're fucking awesome. Their new web layout is pretty sweet, too.
Although I think their band name is the coolest ever, I haven't caught much of them. I also heard about them a few years back and everything I hear about them is positive. I think I am going to pick up some of thier stuff.
What album do you recommend that I get first?

ok. so. what i wrote was essentially that emo is an obsolete term, no one uses it to describe themselves, and that maybe 5 years ago people used to to describe something like death cab for cutie but now it's degraded to dashboard confessional or some shite like that and...yeah. what i wrote first was way more articulate but this is the second time this has happened today so i'm losing my patience.

I'd say "Source Tags and Codes," but that's because that's the only album of theirs I have so far. I'm probably going to buy "Worlds Apart" sometime this week. The riff to "Another Morning Stoner" is just awesome and infectuous; I find myself whistling it every so often. I'm sure they'll be touring soon for the album, I'll catch them for sure. They toured with Queens of the Stone Age a while ago, but I missed that because I was in Kansas at the time.
Hash, Double Door is alright, but getting there sucks. Metro is where it's at. Easy to drive to as long as it's not game night.

Actually it's a label that some magazines have given the band, not the band labeling themselves. I think the whole emo-labeling thing is a ball of crap, too. It's redundant, and it implies other music is non-emotive. What the hell.
what? the blue line drops you off right in front of the double door! I just park my car at school were I pay for parking anyway and jump on the "L"

yeah, but i don't really read a lot of music magazines, other than pitchforkmedia, onionavclub occasionally, sometimes the bust music reviews, and none of them would use "emo" sincerely. rolling stone, maybe? my point is that anyone who uses the term in 2005, esp in print, missed the boat because it's essentially meaningless.

Cool! I will get Source Tags and Codes and see what I think.
I haven't been to the Double Door but have frequented the Metro. Last band I saw there was N*E*R*D. They had an opening band called Spy Lab who is actually the backing band for N*E*R*D. They sucked in my opinion. N*E*R*D put on a really good show.

Yeah, I learned that the hard way. Parking is nil around Wicker Park, but that isn't surprising because that part of the city is full of hipsters, they probably think parking isn't cool. If I go there again I'm definitely taking the el.
They're about as emo as your mom!
*hangs head low, walks to corner of room and sits there, sucking on thumb and cradling a 12-pack of PBR. Bottles, of course*

I have a upass that I have to buy for school and it gives me unlimited rides on any CTA bus or train, so whenever I go places in the city I'll just park at school and take public transit instead

I forget who labeled these guys emo, I usually get articles from fansites. I don't really read any magazines on a regular basis anymore, especially music magazines.
So, you familiar with the band or not?
I dig em. Don't own any of their stuff, but I like what I've heard.
Plus, I think I'm obligated to support the local boys.

this trainwreck of an attempt, courtesy of the fine people of mp3.com:
"WHAT IS EMO?
During the 1980s, underground bands and labels built a network of distribution and touring that was independent of the mainstream music industry. Encompassing artists as diverse as Sonic Youth, the Meat Puppets, and the Replacements, 'alternative' came to be more about DIY ethics than any sort of strict stylistic similarities. It wasn’t until Nirvana’s Nevermind broke wide open in 1991, however, that the term became a glaring misnomer. Many alternative bands subsequently signed to major labels and became platinum-selling artists, which helped turn this once-underground movement into a full-blown phenomenon. Punk's existence began in 1976 when the Ramones emerged from CBGB's with a ramshackle image, fast rhythms, and a complete lack of musical prowess--a refreshing change from the often-overproduced (and overwrought) rock sounds so prevalent during the '70s. The Ramones’ trip to England is said to have ignited the Sex Pistols into action; the Pistols took a more aggressive and nihilistic approach and spawned an equally fervent scene. Since then, there's been no shortage of disaffected and creative youths, and therefore the popularity of alternative, punk, new wave, and so-called 'indie rock' hasn’t waned a bit. Many exciting new sounds have emerged, from Pavement and Guided By Voices' lo-fi masterpieces to the post-hardcore art-rock of Fugazi.
Notable Artists: Nirvana, the Pixies, Gang of Four, the Clash"
the clash was always my favorite emo band.

I bought "Worlds Apart" yesterday, and I like it. There is a lot more piano and stringed instruments thrown into the album, either buried in the mix or as a prominent part of a song or two. Even though it's early in the year, I'd put the album's cover art as a strong runner for album cover of the year. I'm still listening to it to see if I like it better than "Source Tags and Codes" or not.
I listened to "Worlds Apart" again in my car last night, and I've determined I really like this album. Trail of Dead took stuff they did with "Source Tags and Codes" and took things a step further, which is something I really like to see in bands or artists. The album sounds more developed than "Source Tags and Codes," although if you're new to the band I would still recommend "Source Tags" as the first album of theirs to get because I think it's a bit more solid than "Worlds Apart." However, if you're already a fan, get this album.
I have a good feeling Snuffalia would like this album, and probably Balthazar and Sara. Anyone else who's into indie groups would probably like this album too.

Weird. I was just at Ticketmaster and saw they were coming in April, I will be working that day so that sucks.

Thanks Undertow!
I clicked on the link, and they're playing Glasgow in just over two weeks- wouldn't have found out otherwise.
I first heard them four years ago (or was it five?), when they supported Mogwai. Couldn't hear anything for days afterward, now it's time to make my ears bleed again!

No prob. I just found out today tickets for their Chicago stop go on sale tomorrow. I've missed them on the last couple tours in the past two, three years I think, I don't want to miss this one.
I hope you get tickets for it- my girlfriend is a Chicago native, she's always telling me how great the place is.
My tickets are now ordered. What a great start to the weekend-- thanks again.

I listened to Worlds Apart a couple times and couldn't really get into it.
I listened to Worlds Apart a couple times and couldn't really get into it.
That's fine. Just not your cup o' tea? I'm honestly curious why, not to start a flame war or anything.
Yeah, it just didn't have that "listen again" feel to it. I didn't think it was bad by any stretch, it was a solid album I guess... but it's just not something that when I look through my CD collection would say "I feel like listening to that". Not my cup o' tea I guess.
I used to listen to them a few years ago, but I haven't in awhile.
I got a ticket to see these guys in Chicago next month. I'm happy as hell.
I keep hearing that 'Let It Dive' song on my MVP Baseball game. Just looking at the name of the band, I always thought it was metal for some reason. I was quite surprised, sounds like decent stuff.

They have a song in a video game? What?
They have a song in a video game? What?
Yeah, the EA Sports Baseball game this year. The songs usually get annoying after a while, but hearing it just might inspire me to get some more of their music.
I saw Trail of Dead last night. I enjoyed it. They sound a bit more raw live than on the albums, which is good and bad. They played for a little more than an hour, but played a variety of songs from all their albums. What I really liked was the loudness of having two drummers playing on most of the songs. If anyone's curious about checking them out live, do so. The opening band, The Octopus Project, was pretty damn cool too.

I haven't been to the metro in so long, I've been into catching shows at the double door cause it's cheap and over 21 so there's no teeny boppers
and will somebody please explain to me what "emo" is I still don't know
oh and I don't know the band but I'm gonna post in your thread anyway! <3
