And the Palme d'Or goes to...
"Fahrenheit 9/11", by Michael Moore.
Critics predicted this a bit after the competition screening and the 30 min long ovation that followed.

'solutely.
This may help the US release, now.

Can you imagine how bad your hands would hurt after applauding for half an hour?
There is hope, but not for us.
Yeah, I couldn't pick up anything for a month after clapping for only 20 minutes straight once after a screening of Batman and Robin.
I think the ovation was in waves, not continuous clapping and hooting by the same people for 15 minutes straight (the actual ovation time).
It's not easy having a good time.
Even smiling makes my face ache.

Try jerking off a blue whale...Ouch....
It won't get released in the US...at least not any time soon.
THATS SO +3 STILETTO DUDE
the only reason it got so much attention was because its in Cannes, which is in france, which is filled with a bunch of antiamerican pussies. i like michael moore, roger & me and whatevahtehhelltheotheronewasthenameescapesmeatthemoment were damn fine documentaries, and im sure this is just as good, im just saying, you cant judge this particular movie by the reception it got in france.
another great documentary: Super Size Me. Absolutely genius.
The members of Tarantino's jury included Scots actress Tilda Swinton, American actress Kathleen Turner, French actress Emmanuelle Beart, the Haitian-born U.S. writer Edwidge Danticat (who whispered French translations into Tarantino's ear), directors Jerry Schatzberg and Hong Kong's Tsui Hark, Belgian writer Benoit Poelvoorde, and Finnish critic Peter Von Bagh.
Unless Beart was able to charm everyone on the jury with hilarious anecdotes about Tom Cruise's foppishness on the set of Mission: Impossible I think it's safe to rule out Froggie revenge on Bush's Son.
While I can't take anything away from the movie since I haven't seen it, did anyone else at least wonder if Harvey Weinstein (who's practically at war over the movie) might've called in a favor from QT?

nigga please. lions gate or some other indy distributor will pick it up.
itll be released, and itll be received well. and im sure weinstein had something to do with it, actually. im pretty convinced. goddamn vast left-wing conspiracies...
Everyone thought that Lolita ('97) and The Believer would be distributed by SOMEBODY, but they never were. It's been weeks since Disney dropped it and no news. I have zero confidence that this will make it to theaters.

In the LA Times today they said NewMarket (The Passion, Donnie Darko, and Monster), Lions Gate, and Focus Features were all trying to get the rights. Also Harvey might just start his own company to release it. MM wants it out asap and on DVD before Nov. 6. That would cut the Film to Dvd release time by more than 3-6 Months.
I would like to see NewMarket or Focus because they have had more success recently with films especially NewMarket. They are toe up in gobs of cash from the success of The Passion.
"I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotisms." Albert Einstein
yes, july 4 weekend would be a perfect release date.
honestly , I hope it _IS_ out before Nov. 6th. I just think there are wheels within wheels and somehow i worry that the release will be plagued with unecessary red tape and turmoil.

Between Lost In Translation, Eternal Sunshine... and this new one from that dude from Scrubs, Focus has been on a roll, so I'd like to see them get the rights, but you're probably right when you say that Harvey might just start his own production company to release it himself.
Bump just before the start of the 2005 ceremony

When does the news hit? Any predictions? I haven't been following the festival this year.
"L'enfant", by the Dardenne brothers (Belgium).
They had already won it a few years ago with "Rosetta".
Sorry about the lag, my PC keeps crashing.

Palme d'Or: THE CHILD (Dardennes bros.)
Director: HIDDEN (Michael Haneke)
Grand Prix: BROKEN FLOWERS (Jim Jarmusch)
Jury Prize: SHANGHAI DREAMS (Wang Xiaoshuai)
Actor: Tommy Lee Jones (THREE BURIALS, etc.)
Actress: Hanna Laslo (FREE ZONE)
Camera d'Or: THE FORSAKEN LAND (Vimukthi Jayasundara) and ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE YOU KNOW (Miranda July). Fella I know missed out on the Camera D'Or. He was nominated too.
thanks mucho for that. Im to lazy to watch the damn ceremony on the IFC. Very happy to see something by Jarmusch up there. One day, you will update this thread again, and my name will be at the top.

im looking for a DP and someone with a camera (preferably one and the same), so let me know if you qualify.
I guess there was some concern about Cannes becoming more mainstream with their selections for competition, but the winners seem to prove otherwise. I definitely want to see more of Jarmusch's work, and I hope that movie makes it to this year's Chicago Film Festival.

congrats on hitting 1000. it seems like not very long ago i didn't like you cause you were an annoying, mouthy newb. but you got over that fairly quickly.
i just started editing my film yesterday. i'm excited that it hasn't turned out to be complete ass yet, but we're still just digitizing shit and cutting demo reels for my actors.
shit. i didnt even realize id hit 1000. How time flies.
My friends all say i leave bad first impressions. I guess the same goes for online also.
Anyway, im looking at a camera rental site right now - http://www.moviola.com/Cameras/R_cameras.html

One fella said it's the most important film of the last thirty years. This of course, remains to be seen.
and wasn't Tilda Swinton in Broken Flowers?
Yes. It's appearantly a very mainstream film for Jarmusch.

They're pretty arthouse mainstream looking to me.
The concern came from the fact that the seat of director of the festival, whose responsibility is to make the selection every year, was transmitted from Gilles Jacob to Thierry Frémaux. However, Jacob is still around and the transition is quite smooth.
I think the spirit of the festival has been, for decades, to celebrate directors. Other concerns like the box-office are secondary. They are present of course, but the core of the festival, which is the official competition, remains faithful to this attitude. That's why they tend to invite the same directors all the time : Angelopoulos, Von Trier, Coppola, Kusturica, Wenders, etc. Then they put a mixed bag of people (some not directly associated to cinema) together and any result can come out.
Frankly I'm not really interested in the competition nor in the glamour around, but it's good to know that the mainstream/arthouse barrier is not absolute.

In the end, it takes the normal filmgoing public a few months (when the nominated films get a release) to make any sense of the jury decision. I remember people made a feud over Polanski winning the Palm D'Or with THE PIANIST and then came back upon it when they finally saw the film.
They're pretty arthouse mainstream looking to me.
Oh, you mean well-known arthouse flicks? I thought they meant the blockbusters that sell tens of millions of dollars opening weekend, the films everyone and their mother knows about.
Cannes is it's own thunderhouse.

great, can't wait to see it!
Mainstream? how so?
I figured tilda to be anything but mainstream...not after her stint as muse to Viktor&Rolf

This official? It makes sense, every year's winner pisses people off somehow.
