Alien VS John Carpenter's The Thing
Who wins?

VS.

On the one hand, Alien has a better looking monster and Lance Henrikson. But The Thing has got more crazy ass special effects for the monster and Keith Fucking David.
Cons for Alien: I've never seen it. And it's had multiple shitty sequels.
Cons for The Thing: It's a remake of a shitty 1950's movie (but has had no shitty sequels thus far).
Winnar: John Carpenter's The Thing
Mostly because I'm watching the shit out of it RIGHT NOW!
Two of my favorite flicks. The Lance Hendrikson argument is compelling. Alien is likely a better movie, if I'm being objective, but I can't. Me love the Thing.
And, aw, didn't like the Hawkes original? The thing was a giant carrot! Great stuff.
I love both, but it has to be Alien for me. I have no argument or reason on this matter, it's just simply what I prefer.
Yes, I want to play. I really, really do.
And, aw, didn't like the Hawkes original? The thing was a giant carrot! Great stuff.
I mostly just call it that to be vulgar. Of all those shitty 1950's movies it was definitely one of the less shitty ones, that's for sure.
also, I'd put up the chest bursting scene in Alien up against the chest bursting scene in The Thing any day of the week and it'd always come out a draw.
I love both but I'd choose The Thing any day of the week. I've had the pleasure of recently seeing both on the big screen (Alien at that outdoor cinema last week which was introduced by none other than John Hurt, and The Thing in a double bill alongside An American Werewolf Of London).
The Thing: Awesome score (thanks to Ennio Morricone). Amazing effects. And Kurt Russell.
Carpenter's "The Thing" is a sequel, not a remake, although it is basically the same exact movie as the original. I think that may have been Carpenter's point.
Alien is a great film. C's The Thing is fun to watch. Big difference.
Love,
Joe Tonigh
I don't think you can put these up against each other, they are both totally awesome movies and for different reasons. Alien is great and the art-direction is just flat-out amazing. The thing has more gore and a nice unhappy ending, which I love.
For those in LA, THE THING will be in a double bill with THEY LIVE on August 25th.
And I'll be out of town.
THEY! is also a great movie. But I don't know if that's relevant.
thanks for sharing.blackhawk tactical pants.

Aliens was great and Aliens 3 was moody. I don't consider them to be shitty.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
Alien also takes its plot from some cheesy old scifi movie.
Forgot what it was called though.
"It is true, that which I have revealed to you; there is no God, no universe, no human race, no earthly life, no heaven, no hell. It is all a dream - a grotesque and foolish dream. Nothing exists but you. And you are but a thought - a vagrant thought, a useless thought, a homeless thought, wandering forlorn among the empty eternities."
Alien for me, a few years ago I saw it in the cinema thanks to a re-release and went with a friend who had never seen it, wonderful.
Not too big on The Thing, probably have to see this again.
Love Alien, Aliens, and Alien Resurrection. Yes I liked the 4th one.
i like them enough to buy the quadrology.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
They're both good movies, but shitty sequels and crossovers aside, Alien is superior.
They're doing a prequel...
...which will probably most likely both suck and blow, thus creating a vortex which will wipe all traces of life off the Earth, thus completing the job of both Thing and Alien.
As well as Predator.
This is why we can't have nice things.
As well as Predator.
I dunno, Ridley Scott is supposed to direct-

For me it's Alien all the way, love it.
!

There is a slight chance it could be a tiny bit good since Ridley is back directing. Can't be that bad?
I just don't believe that Ridley can save it.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I think Alien is the better movie. Maybe my favorite slasher ever. Because, when it comes down to it, it's really just a slasher in a spaceship. Brilliant stuff. Some of those scenes'll likely always be stuck behind my eyelids.
Too, Aliens is a great movie, too. Wholly different, but still a great movie.
No, not in a world where you can't mention any of tha Alien movies without someone saying "you mean with the predator?"
What if they had The Thing get inside one of those Alien/Predator hybrids?!!
Now there's a fuckin' movie!
they're suppose to be making a prequel to The Thing about the Norwegian camp.

also, despite it's faults, The Thing game was fucking awesome.

Joe: Just, FYI. Carpenter's "The Thing" is not a sequel of any sorts. It's a remake, one that is much more faithful to the WHO GOES THERE? novella by SF writer John W. Campbell, than the 1952 flick. I don't know when you've last seen the '52 version, but the movies aren't even close to being the same.
The chest bursting scene in Alien was/is a cultural phenomenon. People who haven't seen the movie likely know about it. I was only a young kid when the movie came out, and I'll never forget when my parents told me about the movie, how scary that scene was, etc. I had nightmares from their description. Heh.
The Thing burst scene, though, I had no idea was coming when I saw it, and jumped out of my skin.
Wait... what? Holy FUCK! You see this movie before the week is through or I swear I will find you and give you not one but TWO Purple Nurples!
I swear something's all up an' wrong with that whiteboy, dayum!
This is why we can't have nice things.
i look forward to you looking forward.
Alien for me. My favorite thing about Alien is the art direction by HR Giger.
Roger Christian and Les Dilley thank you.
This is why we can't have nice things.
alien, the artwork geiger did for it is amazing.
