Albums you listen to in the winter time
The title sums it up, winter time is around the corner and for some reason at work today I started pondering about what bands/albums do I listen to the most during this season. There are bands I listen to all year around but when the weather changes my playlist follows. Here's my top 12, I love recommendations so please throw some music my way!
1.Brand New- "The Devil and God are ragging inside me."
2.Simon and Garfunkel-"The Sounds of Silence."
3.Bright Eyes-"Lifted Or The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground."
4.Emilie Autumn-"Opheliac"
5.HIM-"Venus Doom."
6.Placebo-"Without you I'm Nothing."
7.Bob Dylan-"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan."
8.AFI-"Black Sails in the Sunset."
9.Black Sabbath- Selftitled
10.Smashing Pumpkins-"Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness."
11.The Birthday Massacre- "Violet."
12.Massive Attack-"Mezzanine."
"For most of this century, scientists have worshiped the hardware of the brain and the software of the mind; the messy powers of the heart were left to the poets."
I don't really have music I mostly listen to during the winter.
Sinterklaas + Christmas music during the winter is greatness though.
I'm with you on Emilie Autumn, Placebo and HIM.
I always find myself listening to more Silverchair and maybe Nirvana in the winter...but I agree with Imke, I don't necessarily have a particular Winter Playlist.
"Start praying for a 12-car pile-up on the turnpike 'cause we're not exactly swimming in livers over here."
I listen to more blues in general. BB King, Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker will most likely be in heavy rotation this year. Also "XO" by Elliott Smith and "Fevers and Mirrors" by Bright Eyes are my winter staples.
There is hope, but not for us.
I'm glad it's getting cold again so I can eventually put on one of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra CDs i got. Those're specifically for wintertimes. just like Egg Nog.
I am glad as well that it's getting colder, Fall/winter weather is def my favorite. I can't really explain what makes an album "wintery" but I know that when winter comes around I usually listen to other bands or certain albums more than what I usually do...maybe it's just me...or maybe I have a bi-polar personality when it comes to music
Trans-Siberian Orchestra are amazing btw. Have you ever heard of "Nox Arcana?"
"For most of this century, scientists have worshiped the hardware of the brain and the software of the mind; the messy powers of the heart were left to the poets."
I for some reason listen to lots of Blues in the summer, I got really into Lead Belly, Howlin' Wolf, and Muddy waters this summer. Bright Eyes's "Fevers and Mirrors" is truly divine. Finally got a copy of it on vinyl the other day, it might be my favorite Bright Eyes record...hard to chose...

Who is this Emilie Autumn? What would you compare her music to, to someone who has never heard it?
She was supposed to be supporting Gary Numan on the tour I just saw, but apparently she's sick or something and pulled out, so we got shitty Rasputina instead. Ugh.
She's an insanely talented violinist, that has had I believe 5 albums. Her biggest one (and the one she has been touring with the most is "Opheliac"). I've seen her twice and I must say her show is quite possibly the most theatrical performance I've seen in a while. I also got to meet her and talk to her and her group of girls that supports her on stage. She really is a sweet person, and very cool with all of her fans. She's a mix of virtuoso violin playing/electronic/metalish kind of sound...if that makes sense lol. If you can find it, check out her album "Enchant." Very beautiful classical music that is truly wonderful. The easiest album to get is Opheliac, she just re-released it/remastered too). Here's a video to give you a preview. Enjoy!

Welp, I listened to a bunch of her stuff on youtube and sorry.. try-hard burlesque goth chicks aren't really my thing. She's like Amanda Palmer meets anime... and I don't really like her voice. I'm sticking with Kate Bush for my batshit insane female musician needs.
That said, she would have been a better live act to see than Rasputina.

Amanda Palmer...isn't that Neil Gaiman's wife? And never heard of Kate Bush...what albums of her are worth checking out? An no worries for not being into Emilie! I wasn't at first but she has really grown on me over the years, and yes can't deny she's a bit on the over dramatic side. lol

listen to the crash kings album. i've been doing that for the past couple days, because we're expecting snow.
it's quite perfect, except for the first track, which is definitely a summer song.

Never heard of them...is the album "Crash Kings" the only one? and thank you for the suggestion

yeah, it's their debut.
no problem (:

Amanda Palmer is the girl from that band The Dresden Dolls that were somewhat popular a few years, ago, I think she is solo now. Has a similar way of dressing and singing, dark cabaret sort of thing, I'm not really a fan, but you might want to check her out if you're into that kind of thing.
As for Kate Bush. Well, I would reccommend you try The Kick Inside (her first album) or maybe Hounds of Love. I like The Dreaming a lot too, but it is a little crazier than the other two. Gets a little screechy at times, but I love her.
no problem (:
I saw the thread you posted about being new...Welcome to the cult!
I can't really say that b/c I'm new too. Like you I've never done any internet forum before but so far I really dig this one. Every one seems really chill and has something funny or interesting to talk about. I should of done the "Hi I'm new" thread but I'm naive when it comes to this social networking business, too late now to introduce myself now lol So...."celebrateyourowndecay" nice to meet you, I'm Adam :)P.S.-Invisible Monsters is my fav Chuck book as well.

You know it's ironic that you mentioned "The Dresden Dolls" because literally right after you posted that I befriended this girl from my class and that's her fav. band and I totally remember that "Coin, operated boy" song...It was some Synchronicity shit right there. I looked them/Amanda Palmer on grooveshark up and I totally adore her and the band
Thank you for the musical suggestion! I would go and pick up some of their albums but I'm hurtin' on cash at the moment
I bet Dresden Dolls would be divine on vinyl.

Don't judge me!
Tuffy the Dump Truck may rarely increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The risk may be greater if you have heart disease or increased risk for heart disease (for example, due to smoking, family history of heart disease, or conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes), or with longer use. Tuffy should not be taken right before or after heart bypass surgery. Also, Tuffy may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. This effect can occur without warning symptoms at any time while taking Tuffy. Older adults may be at higher risk for this effect. (See also Precautions and Drug Interactions sections.) Stop taking Tuffy and get medical help right away if you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody or black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech. Ask your doctor if Tuffy is right for you.
I have a bit of a soft spot for Manhattan Transfer, my Mum always used to play their Best Of when I was a kid. I haven't heard the Christmas album, but I'd imagine it can't be that bad, as far as Christmas albums go.
I'm waiting for the right moment to bust this one out:

Is there a right moment to bust that one out?
Is there?
Is there?

There's a very-slightly-less-perfect Volume II as well.

I never considered changing my musical selections based on the season... I find it odd that people do that.

maybe there should be a christmas albums thread.
I don't really change my listening habits with the seasons, either. I mean, there are definitely songs/albums that I would consider 'summery', but that doesn't mean I only listen to them for 3 months of the year.
I think I used to have those.

The Snow Goose by Camel is quite nice winter listening
Funeral by Arcade Fire always makes me think of winter. Sting's Mercury Falling is wintry.

YES! I had no idea that Halford did Chirstmas music? I heard Billy Idol did as well...might have to check that out, dancing with myself on Christmas eve! lol

I think it came out last year or something? Still haven't played it yet, btw. I'm waiting til at least December.

what makes them wintery though?
