Ahoy Brits! Tell me about Red Riding
Just saw the trailer for this trilogy, and it looks nigh fucking amazing! I want to see it, but maybe it's just a well-cut series of trailers for a shit series of films. It's coming to America soon - any of youse seen it over there? How was it?
Well, for made for TV movie they were pretty good. A lot of people were raving about them when they were first shown on TV here, comparing them to The Wire and stuff like that, but I think it was just because it's British. They wouldn't stand up to the A-list American TV series, or make particularly good movies.
A much better British TV series was called 'Criminal Justice', about a fairly nice guy who picks up a girl, sleeps with her and wakes up to find her dead. Apparently there's been a second series, but I didn't catch that.
It's way, way above "passable", but far shy of great.
i shall download and make research!
Haven't seen, but would like to. I do remember everyone seemingly going apeshit about them though. And it has Paddy Considine in I think. He's great in everything.
No No No, do not watch them! I read the books and then made the mistake of watching one of the TV versions and it was utter rubbish in comparison. The books (quartet not trilogy) are beautifully written, original, poetic, violent and totally compelling. Please read them - it'll be the best thing you'll read this year.
I almost bought* a house that was used in one of these films but when we did a drive by in the area there were a lot of youths around so we cancelled the viewing!
*slight exaggeration.

I saw them, they're above average but only because the average film is utterly shit. It aims for some James Ellroyesque joy, but it's like the Heartbeat version of that. I thought the films were only passable, anyway. But Britain has the worst film industry in the world, and the cast is very fine and so sure, watch them if you like, but don't expect The Wire, either for social criticism or quality of writing.
