Yeah, he's done a Coca-Cola commercial. If you need the money that bad why not just sell your Oscar? That's less degrading. Thank God I didn't care for The Pianist...

This has made me decide to start an official Whore List as a reference re: celebrities who've done commercials. Feel free to contribute.

Notes:
I'm only counting physical appearences, not voice work. Athletes don't count, they have nothing to sell out. PSAs and charity don't count. Hawking YOUR product (i.e. Paul Newman) doesn't count.

Don't bother making up lists. I've seen a report on stars in commercials, and the specialist interviewed (he collected commercials from all over the world) said they had all done it, except one (not even for Japan) : Robert Redford.

Yeah but then again these people are still actors, they get paid for their looks and their voice and sometimes talent if applicable. What do you really expect?

Besides sometimes comertials can be funny, even though 90% of the time i feel my life slip away during comertial breaks.

Oscars aren't worth shit, a couple thousand bucks maybe besides theres a glitch about selling it in that the acadamy has first dibs. Who cares if people do commercials anyway and stop worshipping movie stars.

DirectTV. They made a line of commercials where some celebrity stands in some giant dark blue room and recites some monologue about DirectTV. Danny DeVito and Robert Duvall have each done one, and I forgot earlier that Lawrence Fishburne has as well.

So add Fishburne to the Whore List.
Who cares?
I care, goddammit. I resent people with millions of dollars trying to get me to buy corporate product because they're being given even more money that they don't need in order to do so. It isn't a matter of selling out or artistic integrity, per se, it's a matter of having some fucking dignity.
However, I don't have contempt for everybody who does commercials as some legitimately needed the money (Willie Nelson) and some I love too much to get mad at (Dylan, Burroughs).

Add:
Kevin Smith (HUMILIATES himself in Panasonic commercial. Total peckerhead whore.)
Sally Struthers (for those home correspondence courses from a decade ago, not the Save the Children ones which are admirable)

The worst commercial bloodsuckers, though, are the people who use dead celebrities to hawk their goods. Like Fred Astaire dancing with a fucking vacuum cleaner.

Missy Elliot: Old Navy or whatever shitty clothing line. She did it with Madonna.

The really sad part is those poor Clydesdales that had to scrimmage again and again until the shot was right for that SuperBowl half-time Budweiser Commercial where they kick the extra point.

The asshole that owns those fine animals sold out big-time. And for a fourth-rate beer that only has a dominant market share because it's advertising budget is so big that even draft horses can be enslaved!

ok sorry back to the whining about selling out
making money rules and if you want to do it thats cool.
if you have a creative talent and you kill it to make a buck, it is your decision, but thats being gay and will make me sad.
if you have creative talent, appear in a commercial or movie or whatever, and keep using your talent to make me happy, then you rule.
if you dont have creative talent, and you make money pretending you do, thats cool too. but if i cant ignore you then youll make me angry.

its very simple, really.

My favorite sell-out was when they used the Reverend Horton Heat for a car commercial. But they inadequately exploited his material:

"Eat Steak" for the beef industry promotions, including the description of the slaughter.

"Cowboy Love" should be used to sell pickups and blue jeans.

"Bales of Cocaine" could be used by the NFL.

I can't figure out what to sell with "Liquor Beer and Wine" unless the govt. lightens up on advertising of hard spirits on TV.

what I find amusing most about that is that back when Bill Murray was young, everybody thought he was a shitty actor... then he pulled a Burt Reynolds BOOGIE NIGHTS-type comeback in RUSHMORE and now he has regressed apparently... as has REYNOLDS...

Bobcat Goldthwait had a stand-up bit about Nike using a Beatles song, and how it pissed him off.

He said he couldn't see the Sex Pistols ever getting used in a commercial.

I wish I could remember what the commerical was for, but I remember, saying, "Holy shit! That's the Sex Pistols!"

The Ramones is equally surprising.

Wonder what they'll try and hawk with Dead Kennedys' 'Kill the Poor' or 'I Kill Children.'

It's bedtime for democracy indeed.
