@))!: A Space Odessy (SPOILERS?)
There is probably already a thread about this movie, but since I can't find a search function, I will start a new one.
I just saw 2001 for the first time. Most of the time, I couldn't believe that this is considered one of the best films ever. It didn't get interesting until about the half way mark. Parts of it were really interesting, like how the monolith accelerated the apes' evolution. I loved how scientifically accurate it was. I never liked in Star Wars all the sounds an large explosions in space. There is no sound in space. And there is no oxygen. I liked how they used centripetal force as a sort of artificial gravity. No such thing exists on the Death Star. And now that I've seen this, I understand a few episodes of Futurama a whole lot more.
Overall, it was very boring in the beginning and very confusing towards the end. The middle was good, though.
What are your thoughts?
"A celibate clergy is an especially good idea, because it tends to suppress any hereditary propensity toward fanaticism." -Carl Sagan
"Am I cruel? Probably. Is she an idiot? Yes." -jane s.
They had THE Force. you don't need centripetal anything with Jedi onboard.
edit: also The Fountain is the movie 2001 wished it could be.
and also also, Moon was better.
The Fountain sucked so much. It was like a guy wrote it while he was on an acid trip.
And I wrote 2001 as symbols because I thought it was cool. I guess not. Caps lock doesn't effect the number keys.

To be fair, you can't really evaluate 2001's brilliance until you seen it several times. There is a lot of subtle stuff in there and various parts make more sense on repeat viewings. Michio Kaku discusses how he thinks that if we ever have contact with aliens, it will be with a remote probe like the monolith. This is mostly because though it is highly likely there are other intelligent species in the universe, them actually being able to travel here is probably not possible. When you consider that 2001 came out 41 years ago, it is pretty impressive. I've watched a lot of stuff about it, and I still can't wrap my head around how they did some of the camera work.
I also love The Fountain even though it isn't really a sci-fi movie.
Moon is one of the best I've seen in a long time. The photography and lighting in it are really awesome. The use of shadow when on the lunar surface was exceptionally cool.
Although totally different, the Fountain was more like 2001 than Moon was. Moon is my favorite movie of this year so far, and The Fountain is one of my favorite movies ever. 2001 still blows both of them away, though. It may not be my favorite movie, but its one of those holy goddamn this is fucking brilliant cinematic moments.
Space Odyssey is one of those great films that I really can't watch very often, once every few years or so.
I much prefer Solaris, both versions in fact. Tarkovsky's version was on last night, so I taped it and I'll probably watch that later today.
!
I have to see Moon and the other version of Solaris. I was watching 2001 when my friends came over and they laughed at me

take your capslock off and try editing the title.
