i'm interested as hell to see what happens when you get keanu reeves, an addict, a stoner and a shoplifter starring together in a movie

Do you guys know that Charlie Kaufman wrote a script for A Scanner Darkly? I guess they didn't choose it or what not. You can read it here...

I haven't read it but it would be interesting to compare the two to the novel.

IT's only for people who are interested in reading screenplays. I think it's neat. Especially when scripts are adapted from novels, it's interesting to see what they choose to keep and leave out etc. It's a learning experience for thos eof us who want to be screenwriters.

Charlie Kaufman is going in new directions with sci-fi and his next script is horror.

what kind of animation is this called that there using for this movie anyway ? it looks cool and groundbreaking but damn they characters look so much like the actual actors its almost like some kinda ted turner colorization of a movie gone horribly awry !

It's what they did in Waking Life, another Linklater thing.

They film the whole movie in DV and then artists draw over every single frame.

Does anybody know when the release date is? I saw the trailer for this a long time ago, but still no word on when it's actually going to be released that I know of.

the process they used to paint over the DV is rotoscoping. The guys who invented it are from Austin. Way back in the day they used to do really simple line drawings over film stock in a bunch of MTV promo spots. Have any of you guys read the book?

I read the book and its fantastic.

I saw a bunch of clips on Inside the Actors Studio with Robert Downey Jr. over the weekend, and it looks really good. It has been getting good reviews too.

It opens here in Dallas this weekend (Fri. 14th) and it is playing at the Magnolia which is one of our "artsy" movie houses, so I would check those tye of theatres in your are. But if it is opening in Dallas this weekend it should be opening in most other major markets-- we usually only get films once they hit wide release status.

I saw this on Saturday. It was fantastic. It follows the book VERY closely--I was impressed with how well adapted it was. Robert Downy Jr. and Woody Harrelson are fantastic. Reeves is Reeves, kind of blah, but Bob Arctor doesn't have to talk much without the scramble suit on, so it works out.

Overall, its definitly worth your time.

Definitely a good film for those that are fans of the book. It stays faithful to it and is one of the best adaptation of PKD to come out in a long time. The roto stuff was okay but other times it looked choppy. But that really didn't matter to me, the film brought the book back into my head which was something I loved when I read it.

Those that haven't read the book or are never heard of Philip K. Dick will probably not like this film. I can see people not liking it for this particular reason. Fans though will appreciate the film.

I already want to go see it again.

And the ending credits with Radiohead was great. I'm going to get the soundtrack soon.

WRONG
Rotoscoping is the name for drawing over live action and has been used since the turn of the century.
30's cartoons used it heaps.

Guys in austin invented a computer program that looks at the frames of the shot footage and draws apropreate vectors in place.
But then animators spent over a year adding extra stuff and pretty much redoing everything to get it stylistically right.
Its not really any easier than regular animation.

I saw the film last week and its fucking good.
