a court jester with a broken heart
How could such apparently drunken asshole buffoons convey such sensitivity and heart in such beautiful songs? Sweet Child O Mine, Don't Cry, November Rain, Live and Let Die. How did they manage to have the soul of the blues man, the sad sweet dignity of the mr bojangles, the outrageously desperate greed of the innocent, and the wild animosity of aggressive rock all at the same time? Does every good metalhead have a heart of gold? God, Guns N' Roses was a good band!
I think many artists are emotionally stunted. (You would be artists out there, please stop trying to apply this statement to yourselves.) That is how they can convey such purity of emotion, cause they have not developed adult strategies for dealing with things such a jealousy, anger or personal insecurity. On the other hand maybe they were just great borrowers of others' ideas. Like those fake movie trailers, that look just as good as a real movie trailer, but turn out to be a commerical for manwich.
Many artists and writers are drunks and assholes. Maybe what makes them so sensitive to beauty and their own feelings is also what makes them so sensitive to being upset and driven to drink and be angry.
Furthermore, what made them successful as artists was a single-minded, selfish ambition that didn't allow much room for consideration of others.
Furtherfurthermore, they are entertainers. They have to be ON when on stage, and that carries over off stage while they are encouraged to live the rock n roll lifestyle and would probably would have disappointed people if they weren't obnoxious and destructive and loud.
Have you ever really listened to the words sometimes and you think, if you took away the music this would be really candid exposure of feelings and sadness, and loneliness, and fear. I mean, sometimes it would be. No wonder this music appeals to teenagers. But it still appeals to adults - does it still affect you the same way or do you now only like it out of nostalgia? This ever-changing world we live in makes you give in and cry LIVE AND LET DIE!
AC/DC on the other hand, well they just rocked, they didn't display much sensitivity.

another analysis of GnR
Appetite for Destruction was the only album I listened to for 18 months straight in junior high school.
I'm not making that up. It was seventh grade and I was watching MTV at home, when I saw Slash saunter out into the sweet child o' mine video with his sunburst Les Paul and just crank that opening solo. I was hooked. I took guitar lessons years earlier, but after seeing that I dusted the acoustic piece-o-crap off and didn't put it down until I learned that opening solo.
Once I got the tape, I started breaking down every guitar part of that whole song, and worked my way into others. That christmas, I got my first electric guitar (a Gibson epiphone knock-off of a stratocaster), and progressed into learning the whole album.
All my experiments as a musician began with that tape. I still remember every note of every solo on that album, from the opening chops of Welcome to the Jungle to the six-string orgasm in Rocket Queen, I fuckin' loved it all. The perfect twelve-song rock album.
Sadly, I don't have it anymore. I never got the CD. The thing is, I know that album so well I can hear any song in my head anytime I want. I can hear it now. Thanks for the reminder.
Yeah - im gonna fill the role of annoying asshole who jumps into a conversation with very little to actually say
Guns n Roses (and, for that matter, all cock-rock bands) suck. A lot. They annoy the shit out of me.

yeah theyd be a lot better if they were unsigned and no one knew about them except me and they had donnie darko references in their lyrics

i don't remember. all i remember is the Charles Manson shirt. god, what a dick.
guns n r were the core of my world in highschool. they weren't assholes. Axl was an asshole. Slash was actually pretty articulate. drugs and alcohol have been the downfall for countless artists. Also in GnR's case they went to high too quick. After Use your illusion they basically atrophied.
And again, Axl IS an asshole. When he didn't get his way he just threw baby fits. I went to the Mettalica/Roses concert. After the metallica set we waited like four hours for Guns to come on, when they did, they cut it short because Axl was getting pissed at the sound equipment. basically said, "Fuck this," and walked off.
Anyway, I don't think a week goes by that i don't listen to some of their music.
My little brother was watching the GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS trailer and it had 'welcome to the jungle' playing over it. We both went, get that sucka (the song). We'd forgotten about how much it blasted man.

I agree with most points made here. Espeshially the point of them being sensitive to beauty, feelings, and accpeting the okayness of their situation is what makes them upset/angry/drink-driven. I know atleast two people like this. (except one is going to "make it", the other won't but that's beside the point.) Anyways, I see this in them all the time. They recognize their surroundings, and they see beauty in life, but they won't accept it. Instead they turn it into pain, fear, and self-loathing. And therefore turn to drugs and drink. Somedays I understand it and others I just can't comprehend it; possibly due to the fact that I've never turned to drugs and therefore can't relate.
Also, the selfishness thing. It ultimately hinders them and forces them to accept the world is shit and fucked up and blah blah pass. But, then again, they wouldnt be where or who they are with out said trait. Everyone is selfish, but i find self-loathing-esque musically inclinded types to be more prone to this trait.
And yeah - sadly we focus so much on media and bull shit, and they have to play the part. (which several seem prone to do so) But then again - that's the way the world goes 'round.
GNR>Metallica. Despite the obvious atrophy with GNR, at least they never fucking sold out like Metallica did. Everything past the Black Album with Metallica is total shit.
Axl Rose can eat a dick and die though. He is a grade-A prick.

Someone I know got Slash to sign his guitar recently.
I like a few Guns N Roses tracks, especially Patience. I went through a real phase of trying to learn their songs on my guitar for a while. Now I can only listen to them in moderation, they tire very quickly.

In the early nineties, as Andrew Wiles was working on his proof of Fermat's last theorem at Princeton University, he was trying to somehow find a deep connection between elliptic curves and modular forms. He divised a special case of the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture, which aside from linking Algebraic Geometry(via elliptic curves) with certain periodic holomorphic functions known as modular forms, also surmised that Def Leppard was a FAR superior band to Guns and Roses. Wiles, with former student Richard Taylor, were able to establish a special case of the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture sufficient to exclude such counterexamples arising from Fermat's last theorem and still maintain the validity of Taniyama-Shimura's original Leppard>GNR conjecture. Later, in his personal letters, it was discovered that Wiles was blocked on the proof, hung up on his special Taniyama-Shimura conjecture, when Taylor discovered Wiles had made a fatal error! Wiles' new conjecture alteration was Leppard>=GNR!!! His letters explain:
It was at this point Richard walked in, and pulled me aside.
"Andrew!" He said, "You have to leave the Leppard conjecture INTACT!!!"
Was he crazy, I thought?! But, I could not ignore my own
bias in the argument...
Duff McKagan had been a student of mine during
my earlier fellowship years at Cal-Tech in Pasedena...he was
brillant, extraordinary really...his understanding of real analysis
and complex number theory was like nothing we had seen.
Then, Feynman, that unorthodox prick, turned him on to the soulful
thumps of a Fender P-bass...we lost him after that...
It was hard for me...but I realized Richard was correct...
Leppard was indeed greater than Guns...it broke the proof
wide open, and everything fell right into place...it was a
thing of beauty!
When it became time for Wiles to introduce the world to the long sought after proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, they not only discovered the true genius of Wiles and Taylor, but had unshakeable proof of Def Leppard's superiority over Guns and Roses! The proof was real!

anyone else like the original versions of all the songs guns n roses covered better?
I think I liked Guns N Roses for about a week when I was fourteen. In my opinion, any band that names an album 'The Spaghetti Incident' doesn't deserve my illustrious attention.
Buckethead > Slash.
It love it. But I never loved it enough to buy it and add it to my collection.
While GNR was teh cool for some time it would be a travesty not to mention the fact that the lyrics to Sweet Child O' Mine are total shite. Let us now take a look:
She's got a smile that it seems to me
Reminds me of childhood memories
Where everything
Was as fresh as the bright blue sky
Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that
special place
And if I stared too long
I'd probably break down and cry
Sweet child o' mine
Sweet love of mine
She's got eyes of the bluest skies
As if they thought of rain
I hate to look into those eyes
And see an ounce of pain
Her hair reminds me
of a warm safe place
Where as a child I'd hide
And pray for the thunder
And the rain
To quietly pass me by
Sweet child o' mine
Sweet love of mine
Where do we go
Where do we go now
Where do we go
Sweet child o' mine
This looks like a poem written by a 14 year old boy trying to impress a girl in his biology class.

I just realised that the lyrics to Sweet Child O'Mine remind me of that whole beginning part of The Sound and the Fury.
If they're emotionally stunted then they are incapable of expressing it, I think its more likely that their drama queen tendencies are fueled by drugs and alcohol resulting in the over the top durge, (sweet-child-o-mine etc.) that you list above madde. Too sensitive to live the poor lads! Bleeeccchhhh!!
the fucker an't dead. Wenknee found this and posted it in the SS. the pic makes me want to punch him.

As far as Bailey goes he says that his new appearance is due to the public not wanting him to look like a NORMAL person. He began with a badboy image and cannot seem to escape it.
I knew this man many many years ago and he was a total ass then, but friends who still keep in touch with him say that now he is now the most down to earth type of person than he has ever been in his life.
I don't know him anymore, but I do hope that my friends are correct in this observation of the "new and improved" Axl Rose. I would love to know that he could make a change for the better in his life.
As for the recent lawsuits.....THAT is the Bill Bailey that I knew!

GnR was a great band, i think they got a bad rap for all the on/off stage buffoonery
anyway, thats a major rule of thumb for me in judging a band is if they can completely rip it up with some kick ass rocking and then also take it down a notch with some balladistic type song Metallica is great at this too, Ac/Dc is the only one that comes too mind that dont go the slow sensitive route and are still kickass
