A Clockwork Orange
I both watched and read A Clockwork Orange. Its on my top list next to fight club....i was wondering what you thought of it??
-----------------------------------------------
"I have a riddle for you. A conundrum, if you will. What's the difference between you and a mallard with a cold? One's a sick duck ... I can't remember the rest but your mother's a whore."- 'Sean Connery'
Hated the 21st chapter. Loved the movie.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
never read the book, only saw the movie. Question: Is the book more political? Does the book literally use the phrase "a clockwork orange" ?
We (New Zealand) were one of the countries affected by Kubric pulling the film, pretty much only because we get our videos from the UK where Kubric asked WB to remove the film until his death. This was because of copycat crimes in the 70s. I actually read the book first in about '96 from the school library.
This and Lolita are really the only Kubric films that I love. Full Metal Jacket would join them if the 2nd half wasn't as bad. The pre-'nam stuff is great though.

"A Clockwork Orange" is the title of a book by the beat up author with the wife who gets raped. It refers to the themes of the movie. Kind of like 'the system' being the clockwork, or machinery, or unatural influence of the modern world. The 'orange' is like the innocent human spirit getting spoilt by the modern age. Alex sees this book when he's ransacking the place, then tears it up.

I loved the book and the movie, and I'm a huge fan of Kubrick in general. I'm pretty sure they showed the manuscript in the movie, like Alex picks it up and reads it to the camera for a second, but I tend to mix up the books and movies sometimes, which I guess is a good thing that I can picture it so well 8).
nope. He just kicked shit around and sang in the movie. He was heaps more menacing in the book.

I can see how you once wanted to be a Droog, morey. I bet the false eyelashes were one of the selling points.
I've always liked this movie.
A Vendetta production. <3

"what a glorious feeling..."
I couldnt get through the book...for some reaason i didnt like it...and the only saving grace to the movie was the colors/design the mascara and the huge white penis...what a way to go
First saw it when I was nine, watched it at least once a year ever since. I have the book somewhere, but every time I want to read it, it magically disappears.
Also, it's one of the very few movies that can make me cry.

what a coincidence, i just rented the movie.
love it all. awesome slang. great screenplay. Kubrick pwnz.
scene where Alex sings Singing in the Rain and Frank hears it and spazzes out. Oh man, that's class.

Chapter 21 is rather interesting, but completely changed everything.
It's nice to now have the option to read what the author intended. It was originally removed from the American version of the book, and because of this, the American film as well (Kubrik didn't know about it).
In the intro to my version, there is a little essay by Burgess, who says the book is not the complete, not the theme, without the last chapter.
But I don't know. It's kind of weird, and detracts slightly from the fun of it all.
*buzzer*
There was never anything cut from the film. I've seen an NTSC copy and a euro PAL version. They both finish on Alex's fantasy about screwing a girl in a load of bubbles. There was never any chapter 21 in the movie.

You didn't need to exlain this to me, jeeze. I just wanted to know if the phrase was in the book. I didn't think I heard it mentioned in the movie.
Sorry. I was just explaining how it was used in the book.

That's what the book that Alex tears up is about.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. THE FILM IN GENERAL doesn't have the 21st chapter. Fool.

I took this as meaning that because the chapter was missing from the book that they actually TOOK it out of the movie.

When I first saw this magnificent film, I was shocked. I wasn't used to seeing penises in movies*tee hee*. Great dialogue. Awesome violence like that fight with Billyboy ang his gang. And the sex and the titties. The dark humor. I loved it. The book enhanced my experience.

Its all goooood.
Friend of mine saw the edited version (yes, there is one without the final scene), and we argued about Alex' fate for almost an hour before we both realized the censorship fuckers had deleted the ending.
People who aren't intelligent enough to understand the original ending shouldn't be watching this movie in the first place.

Grrrrr! There is no cut ending. All versions end with Alex in a hospital with the press all around, and he goes "I was cured all right."
-end-
I'm singing in the rain
Just singing in the rain...

I've read the book and it was AWESOME! Should I watch the movie? Is it good enough?

Don't watch it. It'd just make everything else seem like crap. You don't want that, do you? Fly too close to the blinding glory of the sun and those wax wings gonna melt...

Okay, thanks.
...nice metaphor...
Finished the book just a few minutes ago, and watched the movie again yesterday. Absolutely amazing. Alex is very lovable, and the book has some very decent philosophy. Or, as Alex would say: "It was but a like malenky starry book, O my brothers, but what I viddied there was gorgeosity made flesh, and I went smecking ha ha and ha reading the like real horrorshow slovos."

Hated it. Actually, probably hates too strong a word. More detested it. It's like a League of Gentlemen - by which I mean, it's the things nightmares are made from. Oh, I'm referring to the film by the way. I have yet to read the book.

I still can't decide what I think about the last chapter- mixed feelings for sure. I loved the book, and I didn't like the movie nearly as much. It was pretty good, but I just got so many different images and such from the book.
I told you! I spent last summer with my uncle hunting wolverines!

Its horrorshow, I shouldn't tell you but my best friend and i used to call eachother Alex. I wanted to live in that movie.
