a capella tracks?
No, not Rockapella, but I heard tell some bands / artists release a capella versions of songs so people can do remixes. I must not listen to the right music, because none of the bands that I listen to seem to do this that I know of. I'm just playing around with Magix Music Studio with my daughter (she's 8, but seems to have an ear for this stuff). I thought it would be fun to do some remixes.
This is a really good idea.
back when cd singles started releasing, most pop song singles featured bonus Instrumental and Acapella versions, whether for a song by Silk (Freak Me, Baby) or Colour Me Bad (I Wanna Sex You Up) and later on a lot of hip hop singles. many of those consumers were us little hood cats looking to play with some new instrumental beats when a new single dropped ... i remember the mild excitement, the buzz. memories, a long world away. The Acapella versions are still around, but mostly on inported "maxi singles", which anymore you have to special order through amazon or whatnot. i recommmend downloading them. the only acapellas i ever enjoyed, aside from Scarface and Pac's Smile For Me Now, were Bone Thugs post East 1999 Eternal cause the beats went to shit after eazy passed but there were some very cool songs in acapella, like If I Could Teach The World and Look Into My Eyes.
Just next time youre at a big chain store, look through the current cd singles. Ive never seen any rock acapellas but that's not surprising since id never sought one out

fuckn brilliant, the way Jay Z mimicked with his Black Album the overall track listing and album timing to parallel that of the White Album

aside from Rockapella I can't think of many groups besides some college groups. Check out the Chattertocks or Bear Necessities. They are both from Brown University I think. I've seen a bunch of versions of Come On Eileen...
Ladysmith Black Mambazo! Best a capella band EVER!
And, while not strictly a capella, hack out the Five Blind Boys of Alabama cover of Amazing Grace (sung to the tune of House of the Rising Sun). Mind blowing! The Groups has existed since the 1930s!
It looks like what most people refer to as a capella involves lots of harmony and / or voices replacing instruments, which is fun, but not so useful for providing your own instrumental tracks. I guess what I'm more looking for is solo vocals without instrumentation so I can piece something together along the lines of Kruder & Dorfmeister. It's like the complete opposite of a dub mix or karaoke.
Anyways, tonight we used Audacity to take some sound bites from Ladies First from Free to Be You & Me and laid it down on top of some heavy B-Boy hip hop accompaniment, it was extremely silly. Right now, we're playing with the demo version, so can't export tracks to wav or mp3, but should be getting the full box version soon, just got the shipping confirmation yesterday.
This is a really good idea.
