2008: Year of the Comic Adaptions?
It's come to my attention how many awesome comics are being made into films due for release next year. I don't know if they're going to be good, but the comics are all top-rate.
Watchmen, to be directed by the guy that did 300.
Sin City 2
Whiteout directed by Domic Sena (Gone in Sixty Seconds)
Hellboy: 2
Ironman
The Incredible Hulk (Edward Norton, Tim Roth and Liv Tyler staring.)
Wolverine
And that's just the cream of the crop. Your thoughts?
I see Watchmen and Sin City 2 being the ones to watch, closely followed by Whiteout. The rest could go either way, though there's some cast for The Incredible Hulk, eh?
I'm only looking forward to see Watchmen because Frank Snyder did an awesome job with 300. And I'm a Frank Miller bitch, I could start saying that the scenes with Gorgo were useless, but I actually liked them.
Dammit. More 300. There is no escape.
Presumably the dialogue in Watchmen will be less craptacular than the dialogue in 300.
Example:
Buff Guy in Speedo: I must go kill shit, Spartan woman.
Half-Naked Woman: By Sparta, why?
BGS: Because those non-Spartans want to fuck with Sparta, and I love Sparta due to my Spartan training in Sparta.
HNW: (insert trite goodbye-warrior cliche), Spartan.
BGS: For Sparta! SPARTA SPARTA freedom liberty SPARTA!
For the record, I actually did enjoy that movie. But the acting and writing...whew. Except for the wife. I liked her.
I've always thought watchmen, should've been a hbo mini series... cause they are gonna have to cut out alot of story lines, and probably follow the whole thing from Rorshack's POV....
Let's not forget the stoic Heath Ledger playing the Joker in the Dark Knight... dunno how that'll pan out, but the costume and back up is pretty cool and Aaron Eckhart is a great Harvey Dent. The best news is no more Katie Holmes.
Well, the dialogue followed exactly the comics. I think it's supposed to be that raw and not very well written. The nice thing is the rawness in it... At least that's what caught my attention last year. The drawings in the comic were so poor made that I thought it could be cool, so I bought it and then the movie came and even though the graphics were extremely good, the rawness was still there.
If it was supposed to be an epic movie, actually telling the story, then it would be much different, including possible dialogues... Though Sparta was like that, they were honored to be Spartans because they had to go through such a hard training when they were young to finally gain their citzenship that when they were done and they passed their final test, they were actually very proud of it. Ancient thinking and all, but very interesting. But it would also show that Spartans were not that very nice themselves because their training was harsh, and during the training the superiors would kill soldiers just so the others would not fear death. And if you didn't pass your final task (kill a slave with a knife during the night without being noticed), you'd have your Spartan citizenship denied. And every Spartan would have about 10 slaves each... So yeah, they were not that peaceful and nice like they show in the movie.
The comic is not half historically accurate, and the movie is based on it, not historical facts exactly... So if I'm suppose to rate it by following the comic, 9 out of 10. I don't give a 10 because Gorgo scenes with the council sort of annoyed me (but I liked them), because they were not in the comic, and they missed the part where after one of the battles the soldiers are being humilliated (part of their training, that was normal) by their superiors and their superiors were like "do you like that Spartan?" and they answered "I'm loving it, sire!". That would be a cool scene, but it was cut off
I should probably mention that I've never read the comic, so I was just basing my opinion on the movie in and of itself. And, like I said, I enjoyed the uberviolence and the wife (I think this is the Gorgo you weren't too fond of). But, all said, I think it was really just a high-tech Hollywood action flick, but with a cooler setting. The dialogue, especially, I found really annoying.
It's possible that I've been traumatized by the fact that my circle of drinking buddies has inexplicably acquired a jackass redneck fond of yelling "For SPARTA" in his best US Marines voice before chugging beer. Fucker.
I do take issue with the legion of people touting this as the "Best Movie Ever." It's okay. It has cool effects and lots of blood. But it's not cinema. That's all. It's a fun action flick.
And that fucking wolf still sucks.
Yeah, yeah. My friends keep saying "THIS IS SPARTA!!111" all the time, too. It's starting to annoy me.
And I agree with you, it's a nice movie, but hell no, it's not the best movie ever.
I still think The Man with One Red Shoe is among the list of best films ever.

Man, I hadn't heard abouth that Hulk movie until just now. With that cast, I'll probably go see it.
And I've always had a soft spot for Ironman and Wolverine. So, looks like a pretty good year, action-movie-wise.
