2000-2009: The Best Movies List
I guess showing the savages as bloody-thirsty maniacs instead of just peace-loving people of the land that never knew of death and destruction until the white man showed up.
But that's not a historical theme, that was the reality of that culture.
No, they fought just as much before, as they did after we showed up. But they were no more savages than the Europeans were, who fought just as much.
What is this responding to? And after we showed up, they stopped fighting because they were conquered! FOR SPAIN! FOR THE QUEEN! FOR GOD!
What is this responding to? And after we showed up, they stopped fighting because they were conquered! FOR SPAIN! FOR THE QUEEN! FOR GOD!
True. Ignore the first part, because it reads strangely, but the second part still applies.
So why do they hate mel gibson?
I think most people hate him because he's crazy and doesn't stick exactly to the facts.
But who does?
I think they like hating him because he's an anti-semite, which is just as retarded as hating someone because they're a jew.
Not exactly.
they're both hating someone for who they are and what they believe, no?
Yes, but I said not exactly, because the nature of the hatred in the anti-semite, is different than the nature of the hatred for the person hating the anti-semite. Not that either is okay, but they are not really the same thing.
Hate is hate. Don't discriminate!
Hatred is hatred. That's like saying there's a difference between someone killing someone because they're a psychopathic maniac and some one killing someone because they got too drunk at the bar.
Is there no difference between someone killing because they're a psychopath, and someone killing to defend their child? According to you both, it's the same thing.
And that's bullshit.
Why?
I won't continue this, because it's a movie thread.
I'm watching No Country for Old Men, and even though the sound is not very good, it's a very intense movie.
And now for something completely different...

Braveheart and Apocalypto were both awesome movies, regardless of how inaccurate they are, historically speaking. I have no interest in seeing anything else he's made.
We still have to wait to see if The Road Warrior was historically accurate or not.
No, it's not. Nobody is born a bigot, it's a choice you make.
you can convert to Judaism. Sammy Davis did it.
I liked Apocalypto.
me too, mel gibson is a great filmmaker.
The idea that you have to choose to be a bigot is dopey. People can be raised stupid too. That said, I don't think hating jews is bigotry. It's natural, because they murdered Our Lord, who was the son of God, and thus not jewish. When you think about it, too, Mary is quite an English name. Likely if she was from Bethlehem she would have been called Iqubar or something gay like that, so we know she was only taken to Bethlehem later in her life for the first census.
That was intended to be a joke, but now that I've said it, I realise I believe it. Something else, huh?
I don't hate the jews, but I sure do feel bad for the Palestinians, and I think this whole "God's chosen people thing" is ridiculous. I can't really talk about that much in these parts (as in, where I live) because people in the South are generally pro-Israel. Also, this thread is about movies.
If we're adding documentaries to the proceedings, I'd like to add the following top six. Herzog, of course, dominates the proceedings:
- You See Me Laughin'
- Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus
- Grizzly Man
- Murder Ball
- The White Diamond
- Encounters at the End of the World
I not really into documentaries, but I love The Fog Of War. And anything by Adam Curtis.
!
Okay I know this might sound stupid, but as far as documentaries go I thought that the Planet Earth documentary that the Discovery Channel did was amazing.
Was that the BBC one? That was pretty good.
!
yea it was the same one....it was just narrated by sigourney weaver over here.
Outside of cinematography, there is nothing worth liking about that movie.
No, Children of Men was a good movie.
a good movie, yes. Not a great one or worth being on a top 10 of the decade list.
Unlike Eastern Promises, which y'all have savagely underappreciated, and was much better than A History of Violence, except for the opening scene and the café scene, and the stairs-sex scene was good, but EP had something AHoV didn't and it didn't have something AHoV did, which was those useless child actors. EP was a great film, unless I'm misremembering something most terrible. I don't think, mind, the opinion is specifically difficult to defend, though, considering y'all with your Junos and 500 Days of Summer. More liek 500 Gays of Summer, am i rite?
Eastern Promises was a brilliant movie.
I didn't even watch Juno. I'm as girly as they get, but I don't like movies like that, Indie or not. Blah, SAP.
Eastern Promises was excellent, and I agree that it was a better film than A History of Violence, but I'd put them both on that list over Children of Men any day.
I forgot to add Batman Begins to my list.
Little Miss Sunshine's one of MY favorites...
Casino Royale has to be up there in the rankings, no doubt.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
No. No you're not...
Si vis pacem, para bellum
Outside of cinematography, there is nothing worth liking about that movie.
Agreed.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
man, casino royale put me to sleep, why is it so long? it's the only james bond movie i've seen and i wasn't very impressed by it.
I really don't get people who think Batman Begins was better than The Dark Knight.
!
Children Of Men's story was entertaining but flawed, but yeah, the cinematography is superb and should be celebrated.
Casino Royale is easily my favorite James Bond movie, but it shouldn't be in the Top 10 of the Decade list.
And Mike: Batman Begins is a perfectly balanced, extremely well written and acted and directed movie, whereas Dark Knight was bloated and uneven, especially in the editing and the way Nolan directed the movement of the camera became repetitive about halfway through the movie. From a story standpoint, every little moment in Batman Begins is there for a reason other than just to excite the audience, but half of the shit in Dark Knight was just there for the sake of being bad-ass. OK, the Joker can cause massive amounts of chaos, awesome. Oh, ok, killing Rachel Dawes and creating even more chaos, cool. OK, so now you're blowing up a couple boats and a hospital, great... Yawn. Give me something more than explosions. Batman has always been fascinating because of the character, and there was no character development until the final scene of the movie.
Another thing, when I watched Dark Knight, I wanted it to end a half hour or 45 minutes earlier, and last night, while rewatching Batman Begins, I never wanted it to end, and so I guess that's how I judge the difference.
mine are in no particular order:
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
The hurt locker
The prestige
American Psycho
those are from 2000-2009
i have a lot more from before then
All movies about Batman and James Bond... suck the donkey dick.
Obviously.

What does that even mean, though? Historical theme?
