2000-2009: The Best Movies List
Nope, you only get 10.
I could only think of a couple movies that i didn't see on the list. I thought both The Jacket, and Candy were two of the best movies this decade.
I don't think I've seen either of those.
My favourite films of this year are The Hurt Locker and In The City Of Sylvia, but I've only seen each of those once so I don't know if they'd stand up on repeat viewings.
!
I was meh on the Jacket and I don't think I've ever seen Candy. My favorite movies of the year so far are Moon and Goodbye Solo.
The Jacket, kind of like The Machinist, was a way cooler movie in theory than it was once executed.
Exactly. I thought The Machinist would have made an amazing episode of The Twilight Zone, but as a movie I wasn't very excited.

Any particular reason why you would list The Illusionist rather than The Prestige?
Yeah, I was curious about that, too. I saw them both within days of each other, and although there were a few things about The Illusionist that I really dug, I loved The Prestige through and through.
Remember when it came out and we had like a 10 page thread on it that stayed on topic all the way through? That's a testament to a great film right there!
THANK YOU for reminding me of that movie. Have to download it! =D
One that hasn't been mentioned yet:
Dead Man's Shoes

Oh man I love Dead Mans Shoes:
"What are you looking at?"
"YOU, YA CUNT!"
"Look, my mates have got this funny idea that you-"
"Yeah it was me."
"What?"
"I broke into your house, I painted your face. I've got you right here" (points to the palm of his hand)
!
I love that bit when he says "I've got you right here". Amazing. Paddy Considine is one of my favourite actors. I agree with you guys on JGL and Jamie Bell, as in they're my favourite young actors out there.

You filthy bastard, how do you do that?
Also, in three days you'll have been here for three years. I didn't realise, too, I'd joined before you. Odd.

It's mainly because I'm awesome.
Three years...crazy. And I joined on Halloween, so that's cool. I thought you had been here longer then me though.

Ah fantastic, I saw that 3 years ago and I regularly make people watch it. Damn damn good. Considine is awesome.
I am jealous of your Haneke time.

Been a while since i've seen 'a guide to recognizing your saints'. from what i remember, whatshisface transformers kid did a good job acting-wise.
I saw it pretty recently, and it was highly recommended, but I wasn't impressed, although some of the acting was ok.

One that I will submit that would probably be overlooked every time is Peter Berg's The Kingdom. That movie damn near made me cry by the end of it.
Is that the movie with Jamie Foxx in Iraq? Because that movie was fucking dreadful. Like, really fucking stupid/bad.

I'm sorry, I was under the impression I'd quoted the forty-odd really awful films that he'd included in his post. I wish you a quick a steady recovery from whatever illness you're currently suffering from. EDIT: I must have seen what you said to Eddy submliminally. How odd... and spooky.

If they made this exchange into a film it would surely be among the top 10 greatest films of the next decade!

Good list. I haven't seen Bad Santa, Whale Rider, Life as a House, Monster's Ball, We Were Soldiers, The King, Ink, Off the Map, No Man's Land, Twilight Samurai, or Northfork. I think 21 Grams was pretty good, Amorres Perros was better, Frailty was great, Garden State was pretty good but the ending ruined it for me, The Wrestler was fantastic, Road to Perdition and Ghost World were both good, and Lars & The Real Girls, Squid & The Whale, and Maria Full of Grace were all fantastic.
i just saw chumscrubber and while the story is alright for me, jamie bell's acting was great.
We Were Soldiers is worth the price alone based on Sam Elliott's performance:
I concur. I also liked the kid who played the tuba.

i had no idea bad santa and ghost world were the same guy. ghost world i loved, bad santa was eh.
Bad Santa was lame.
I challenge anyone to find something Sam Elliot was in where he wasn't brilliant!
I wonder if he was particularly thrilled to do that movie, because it was a character without a moustache.
Monkeywright and Nathaniel Parker:
Seriously, in his most understated performance ever Sam Elliot is beautiful in 'Off the Map', in case you haven't checked it out, but the performance of young Valentina de Angelis and the paced storyline that makes for better 'solitary' viewing makes this an absolute 'hit' or 'miss' depending on who you talk to.
"Well, ain't it a small world, spiritually speaking. Pete and Delmar just been baptized and saved. I guess I'm the only one that remains unaffiliated."
We Were Soldiers is one of the worst war movies I ever saw, along with Hart's War and Tigerland.

We Were Soldiers is so bad that it isn't even so-bad-it's-good, which means it is REALLY bad. I watched it a couple years ago on DVD and mentally puked. It takes itself so fucking seriously and has so little merit that the incongruity is baffling.

We Were Soldiers can be as awful as possible. It's still worth seeing for Sam Fucking Elliot!
Just fast-forward through all the scenes that don't have Sam Fucking Elliot in them.

Has he ever not had a mustache in a film?
My history has this hatred for Mel Gibson, because he ruins everything that he touches in terms of historical themes.
I thought Apocalypto was supposed to be pretty good?
Not historically. He did get some things right, though.
He knows, though, that the story is more important than the facts. The dude knows how to make a movie.
he said they hate him for his use of "Historical Themes" though, that's a big difference in hating him because of "Historical Facts."

Oh and Milk! That would definitely make my top 10. Ha, and Wet Hot American Summer is definitely a classic already, but I don't know if I could put such a silly film in my top 10 of the decade. I love comedies, but it's hard to put them up there with the likes of There Will Be Blood, Children of Men and so on. But I do have In Bruges and Inglorious Basterds up there. I don't know, tough call. This list really needs to be larger than 10.
