XOXO and Other Letters: It's February and I Love Reading
Um Chuck hasn't been worth more than .99 cents in a long time.
I see what you're saying there. But it's less about the money and more about the time.
I know! I remember when a bag of M&Ms was forty-eight cents at the drug store. Makes me so sad, how far we've fallen.
I remember when i had to walk to school in the snow in cardboard shoes! Kids these days...
I know, shoes were cheap too. What the hell.
Would I pay 99 cents for a slap in the face?
Depends on who's slapping, I guess.
This is why we can't have nice things.
nvm
I still have Men, Women, and Children sitting on my shelf. I need to read that so I can get to his new one.
I've got Men, Women and Children too and haven't read it yet. Couldn't resist reading the new one first though.
Finally finished Vanity Fair. Didn't like it too much, and tonight I'm angry with my friend who said I'm like Becky.
I'm done bothering to try and read everything for my course. I'm reading Gone Girl! It's nice to read something this easy to get in to.
Bwahahahahaahahah!
Come on! Really? No one? hahaha! Okay, somewhere Jesus is rolling his eyes, and wiggling his tootsies. While rubbing lotion on his feet and pondering his next pedicure. * And deciding, "Should I pay that 99 cents? Oh look, I just found a dollar in my robe, what are the chances of that?...It's good to be the king."
Amii, your avatar is my new very favorite.

This is why we can't have nice things.
Thanks Tuffy for finding the actual perfect bit of hyperbole and a half for my avatar!

I'm not talking about the much-maligned Jesus in the picture with the crown of thorns. If any posting here are not satisfied with Chuck's work anymore, are you merely malingerers? I do wonder if the moneylenders in the temple weren't those who also assigned worth and worthlessness to things. Perhaps I need to contemplate what value a malingerer may have here in Chuck's temple....
That said, I'm taking a break from reading much beyond web-based non-corporate-owned news sources, trying to sift useful reality-based information from puppetsquawk. Also, I'm about to look at the mechanics of Phoenix in light of Chuck's essay part 1.

Malingerers? Are you asking if we stick around and pretend to like Chuck? We don't pretend. This forum hasn't been centered around Chuck Palahniuk for a very long time. Chuck is what brought us here, Chuck is not what keeps us here.

I didn't get a sense that you were pretending to like Chuck. Have you commandeered the place then? Just trying to understand. Where do the Chuck-centered forums exist then?
The thing is, for everyone who's read all his novels, he hasn't amounted to much in the last few years. Personally, I think Rant was his last good book. Others may think even further back in time.

We didn't comandeer anything. Chuck's recent works have been disappointing and most of us recognize that. Some of us have given up on him. We are a family here and we have many things to talk about besides chuck.

Stick around. You'll see. There's way more to talk about than Chuck's books.
I'll be starting Gone Girl some time today. I'm excited to get to this one. I loved her other two books.
I'm reading it and really enjoying it! Sometimes there's things about the character voices that irritate me but for some reason I'm liking it even more because of it. It's definitely addictive.
I actually finished Chuck's short Phoenix the other day. It was amusing. I really want to read Tell All and Damned soon too. Haven't read Chuck in a while so it would be a nice change in pace.
I'm reading 813 right now.
I'm still reading Haunted, only made it about halfway through and was distracted by other books. But yeah, I'm still reading Chuck here and there, I haven't read all his stuff and so I still have time to end up disappointed eventually, I suppose.
Sometimes I think/worry/wonder the razzing of every Chuck fan that is still excited that comes along will eventually result in the Cult's demise. Which I would really hate to see happen. It it Chuck's "official fansite" .
On the other hand tons of these newbs can't even take a mild joke directed at them and if we didn't razz them we would end up with a forum full of manic acid burnt space monkeys looking to punch everyone.
We've always given every new person a hard time.

That's not a good reason to give someone a hard time.
Comparing Palahniuk to Jesus and using the word "malingerers" is though. Perhaps he took the name "THE CULT" a bit too seriously.
Why is this place called the cult anyway? Is that just a Survivor thing or what?
I always assumed it had to do with Survivor. I think he only had 3-4 books out when this site was originally created.
Cat's Eye was really good. Tomorrow I'll start a tangible book for change.
It's a Dennis thing.
But even Dennis doesn't hang here anymore.
We should get the kid who can't find the quote button together with the guy who thinks Phoenix is about him, put them in an aquarium, and see if they make baby versions of whatever they are.
This is why we can't have nice things.

This.

I don't mind being given a hard time if that's what is happening here. It seems mildly neutral and is at least alert without being sociopathically menacing.
What's perplexing though is the site says chuckpalahniuk.net and on the surface appears to have been created with Chuck -- and ways to enhance creative writing skills along the way -- as the focus. I dipped a toe into a thread without much investigation into conversations in other threads. It seemed a safe place to start. What threw me for a loop was to hear people dissing the founder of the site and calling him a moneygrubber. I grabbed the Jesus and the temple analogy not because I think Chuck's like Jesus, which he may or may not be like, but for convenience' sake.
Let me use another example. I'm an NBA fan and my favorite team used to be the Pistons. I watched for a couple of seasons and had gotten pretty familiar with the players, their stats, their playing strategies, etc. I got to be such a fan that I decided I wanted to actually see them play live. I sought out a team schedule, bought tickets to a game against one of their biggest opponents (the Indiana Pacers) and booked my flight to the airport nearest The Palace. In between the time I bought the tickets for the game and flight and the actual game, what does management do but trade Chauncey, Rip, Ben, AND Tayshaun out to other teams in exchange for Jason Kidd. Could I still love the Pistons? Maybe. Might I still want to go the game I had tickets for? Probably, as I'd already invested quite a bit into it to not go. But is it the game I'd hoped to see? Let's carry it a little farther. I'm sitting in the stands and some good ol' boys are sitting in front of me and they start dissin Chaunce, Rip, Ben, AND Tayshaun. I stayed through the game and never said a peep to the good ol' boys. Did I continue to watch the Pistons after their evisceration? Nope.
It is what it is. It's all good peeps!
Oh man. Ritt, what does that basketball story mean?
It means that she pulled a "fans of Chuck" on the Pistons.

This is all understandable.
Here is the funny thing. Nobody around here ever says much about Chuck at all unless someone new and excited comes along. Every now and then when some update is posted about a reading or a new book or something some of the regulars will comment with interest, or someone will make a reference to of the books now and then in the context of making a joke or an analogy or using a quote for something, but aside from that, it is mostly other conversation about other things.
Most regulars seem to have an appreciation for his older work, that appreciation stays whether the newer work sucks or not, and many regulars continue to read all of the new stuff that he writes and not just dismissing it on merit of being new, but dismissing it on merit of sucking ass for whatever reason it sucks ass.
here is my analogy for you, for perspective, I fucking adore Metallica. But then Load happened.
Does it mean I don't still adore Metallica? No. It just means the artists stopped starving and the work suffered for it, and I won't pretend it isn't true just for the sake of dedicated fandom.
Also, sidenote; Chuck did not found this site.

You also seem like an alert but not sociopathically menacing type of person. I like that.
I'm going to assume you're saying that you just wanna go to Chuck.com and talk about Chuck with people who talk about Chuck. That happens here! Just not necessarily in THIS thread or even in MOST threads.
Chuck Palahuiuk also did not create this website. So it's okay to not kiss his ass. He won't ban you. He won't hate you. He won't find out and even if he did, he wouldn't care.
Basically this and this are where you talk about Chuck.
And this and this are where people who have at any point in their lives read a book by Chuck Palahniuk talk about other things they have in common with each other.

Get out of my head.
It's like you're not even speaking english.
I know what I'm talking about.

I won't apologize for publicly proclaiming that I have loved everything I have read by Chuck so far. The man is a literary genius.
Thanks for the info and the tips but don't think I'm kissing your ass for thanking you! Maybe I'll wander and lurk a bit.
I will put words here later.
In the meantime, this is how you quote.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Did he or she just refuse to kiss my ass?
Guards, seize him.
I'll wait.
In the meantime, someone left a copy of Great Thinkers A-Z in my room last week. I don't know where it came from but I'm going to read it.
He's written a few really good books but "literary genius" is a bit of a stretch.
I'm reading A Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans. The basic idea of it is spending a year taking all of the Bible's instructions for women as literally as possible.
I was supposed to get it as a Christmas present from my Mum but it took Waterstones about a month to deliver it. It's good but the author's tone is quite annoying.
Started Bad Science by Ben Goldacre.
I received The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins on Saturday, and I've been reading that whenever I can. So interesting, I love it.
I gave the Rico Slade book to a friend and he praised it on Facebook.
Man, I love that book.
I still need to read that.
