nope!! once is enough
So is there like some unofficial underground book club in The Cult? And they are like your sworn enemies that you must fight to the death and carve with knives and shears?
Or is it just that "OCBC" looks alot more prestigious than "BC"
HMMMMMMMMM
And I just realized that the Stanza Society is the SS....
SIEG HEIL!

noooo...it's actually the OFFICIAL cult book club. it's a public group, like the stanza society. you have to join, but we don't discriminate.
What does the book clun entail? Consist of en therefore as such.
What goes on inthere?
Seeing as how I've been "mysteriously" sponsored, it seems only fitting that I do my inaugural post here since this will be where I intend to be doing a majority of my posting. I think I might be too much of an old cranky pants to be spending much time in the GD. First, let me say a very meaningful thank you to the donor who helped bring my account back to life. I do appreciate it. Second, sign me up for this goshdurned book club thingie. Sounds alright to me. I could do with expanding my reading list a bit more. I'll see all you kids around.
OMG *clubs rents in celebration*
*squeals with a mixture of pain and joy, scrambles for his club*
i guess my cookie expiered or there's a new password, but i cant get into the book club forum... help please.

Hi Moe,
I was getting in fine, but having problems posting. Now it seems I can't get in even with the new password. It may be a prob at my end, but I don't have any issues getting into the Brit Group or Cult Cinema. Any ideas? I'm looking forward to discussing A Million Little Pieces...
Cheers Moe
Riddle
i've got a few ideas, one of which includes stabbing the entire OCBC forum to death with this orange sharpie... as for good ideas, well, it's time to call the professionals.
i'll be back.
ok, try it now...
Hello again, friends. Don't forget you need to JOIN the OCBC before you can view and respond to threads because it is actually a Public Group just like the Cult Cinema or the Stanza Society, etc. Once you file a join request, you'll receive a PM from me with the password you'll need to enter the OCBC. You need to join the OCBC via your User Control Panel in order to get the password! Once again, for the cheap seats in the back, How To Join The OCBC:
1. Click User CP (you can find this in the tool bar that falls just below the area that says "welcome moe.ron, 0 Private Messages, Who's Online, 0 Members Chatting" and runs horizontal.

3. Choose The Official Cult Book Club from the list of "The Following Groups Are Available For You To Join"
4. Click Join Group and enter your "request reason." Extra points for funny requests!!
5. Wait for my PM. If your Private Message Inbox is full, you will not receive the OCBC password until you clean it out!
Additionally, I'd like to post the Reading Schedule through July 05 for both sections of the OCBC:

I'm still looking for Discussion Leaders for the Hemple and Baer books, too. If you're interested, please PM me.
ORACLE NIGHT. Can someone PM me as a reminder? Should I contact PGoutis then?
did you know you can set reminders for yourself on the cult calendar?? you'll find all of the discussion start dates have been added to the calendar
Does the calender remind you, because I never check the calender and if it's on there and I never check it because I have too then I'll still miss out on it.
HELP ME MOE!
i think it sends a PM or something like that, brown. i'm not sure, as i've never used it myself, but i did set a reminder for this month's discussion...i'll let you know how it works out. in the meantime, i suggest you go ahead and do it for july
p.s. lotsa good shit on the calendar, you SHOULD check it.
I was gonna add an event on the calender and got this as a reply:
Mr. Brown, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons: Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, you may need to choose a membership plan. Click here to choose a membership plan.
well, you can't add an event, because you're not a moderator... but what do you want to add??
my suggestion is to choose books that aren't out of print or brand new in harcover only.
can't please all of the people all of the time, dzudzu...and sometimes, if you want to read a good book, you gotta suck it up. you can feel free to skip a month's discussion if you can't seem to find the time to make you way to the local library and borrow a book you don't want to purchace in hardcover or peruse your local 2nd hand book shop.
I went to like three stores and they didn't have them - I wouldn't mind if once in a while it was like that but the next three months are. I can't spend 25.00 for a hardcover and I'm not ordering something I know nothing about. so maybe in a few weeks I'll join you guys.
PS - do you ever pick a classic? just wondering.
well, you can't add an event, because you're not a moderator... but what do you want to add??
I wanted to put a reminder of the ORACLE NIGHT discussion on there? Will discussion ringleaders be PMing people who want in on their discussion?
didn't have what, exactly? i tried pretty hard to alternate paperbacks/hardcovers, old/new...i'm pretty proud of my success in that aspect.
and what do you mean, a classic? many, many critics consider the dubliners a classic book, including the publisher penguin books and their modern classics division.

brown, listen. go to the front page of the forum index. scroll all the way down till you see "Upcoming Events for the Next 14 Day(s)" and click the little picture that looks like a calendar. scroll down again, and on the right hand side, toward the bottom of the page, you'll see a pull down menu that says "jump to month." choose july, 2005. then, once that month comes up, click the event on the 15th called "OCBC Discussions Begin!" when that box comes up, you'll see a link that says "set reminder fot this event." click it.
done and DONE.

both the February book and the April book are out of print and the March was hardcover so I just couldn't do it.
By classics I mean like Dickens, etc - there's too many to name

thanks but most libraries don't carry brand new books

Moe, I have some difficulty moving my neck from time to time. Can I call on your expertise for that too?
Seriously, thanks for the detailed explanation!!! Now in the voice of that chinese fella in FARGO: "Yer such a superlady!"
what the crap? I feel like you guys ar egiving me hard time about this. yeah, maybe I should suck it up and spend 25.00. but maybe if it's a book club it should be easy to get the book - barnes and noble has hundreds of books - cheap books so why are there only expensive rare books on the list?
I'm probably not the only one that hasn't been discussion due to this. I wasn't trying to be picky or ornery - just thought it would help get more people involved.

I'm only joining on in what I can get. Paul Auster's ORACLE NIGHT! Whoah!
P.S. This is my first time ever here, so I ain't mixing up in any of this, I just flipped when I saw ORACLE NIGHT.
ORACLE NIGHT!!
February and May Literati choices are classics.
Yes, I can sense your excitement - I will have to read that one.
It's easily available.
ORACLE NI- I'll shut the fuck up now. (I can already see me not even joining in on the discussion come July. Some excitement eh?)

Try www.half.com for inexpensive hardcovers and new books. You can usually find them for less than the trade paperback at Barnes and Noble. They have the new Coupland book for $13, Hell's half Acre new for around $10 and Blackbox starting at under $3 used.
both the February book and the April book are out of print and the March was hardcover so I just couldn't do it.

Hey, kid, I managed to find almost all of them for 10 bucks or less at Powell's. I think maybe you're just looking in the wrong places.
The only one that I had a hard time finding was Black Box. But I found it on ebay for a couple bucks. I think including shipping it was still under 5 bucks.
Besides Eleanor Rigby - because I'm not going to buy that one - they are all decently priced on amazon. Haunted and The Dog of the Marriage were the most expensive (although I haven't bought Haunted yet for obvious reasons). TDOTM was only 13 on amazon, at the book store it was 20.

do i need to re-join?
