What's the last book you lent to someone?
and why?
I just lent a friend of mine Maurice And His Amazing Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett. I think she should like it because she very much likes the British sense of humour. Also, English isn't her native language so I wanted to go for something that wasn't too complex for her to fully understand.
!
I don't lend. I used to, but when I'd see them just casually toss my stuff about It made me want to hog-slap the parties involved.

Is this just another excuse to talk about your new girlfriend?
We get it, okay?
Anyway, I only lend books to members of my family, everyone else can screw off. Last time I was home I left A Confederacy of Dunces for my sister because she enjoys humour and is interested in stories involving the American South. I also dropped off The Reef by Edith Wharton, Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy for my mum, because I don't approve of the brightly coloured paperbacks she's been bringing home from the library.
i loaned "stranger than fiction' to my girlfriend, because i thought she would like the story about people dressed in animal costumes walking around the mall....there was a moral to that story right? whateva.
i loan out all of my books with the full expectation that i won't ever get them back. most times i don't, so i'm not dissappointed. i rarely re-read books, and having shelves upon shelves of them just means i have to dust them, so it works out well. plus, the books i lend are typically unknown to the reader, so it's almost like a public service. or something
I mailed my friend a copy of C.S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters. Ain't seen it since, that was about five years ago. I'd call him a bastard but on more than one occasion he's just bought me copies of books he liked an mailed them off to me. In retrospect, I'm the bastard for thinking I should have got it back.
I loan too many books out and I always expect to get them back. Right now I have these loaned out:
- Better than Sex - to my friend's wife
- Geek Love - to a friend
- Hell’s Angels - to my cousin
- The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide - to my brother
- Middlesex - to my aunt
- Reasons to Live - to a writer friend
- Tumble Home - to the same friend
- Sex and the City - to my cousin
- How to Lose Friends and Alienate People - to my girlfriend's cousin

But if its something I wanna re-read I don't loan it. I just loaned a bunch of books to my sister-in-law but I don't remember what, oh one was Lunar Park. The reason is she's housebound with an autistic kid and needs as many books as humanly possible.

I do! It's comforting to have them around, I have two big piles of them right here on my desk!
Recently lent [U]Survivor[U] to a good friend of mine. Wanted to introduce him to Palahniuk and just how enticing reading can be.
Choke, to my boss. He picked it over Survivor.
Choke to my friend. She started reading over my shoulder, the bit about the foreskin of christ and decided she needed to read it.

"Did you know the second time you read Moby Dick they become friends..." etc.
Some of my favourite books aren't the type of thing that I could lend out to people, not because I'm one of those freaks who's excessively protective over their things but because I don't know many people with tastes even vaguely similar to mine. I hardly know anyone who would appreciate Amy Hempel, I hardly know anyone who would even understand Shamanspace or Inflatable Volunteer by Steve Aylett. I guess it's best to start with more accessible things like Palahniuk and build up.
!
The last book I lent somebody was Invisible Monsters, and that was...oh...4 or 5 years ago now. Still haven't gotten it back. I did this because the dude had lent me American Psycho and introduced me to the writing of Ellis. These days I usually just give my books away. If it's a book I'll read again, though, I hold onto it (woulda reread IM, alas...).
Last I lent out Dermaphoria because it is so God-lovingly amazing. Someone lent me Confederacy of Dunces and I never finished it... it has become part of my collection, but I want to give it back, but I want to finish it... fuck.
I have lent and lost only a few books, but only because I use the library a lot so I don't have many to lend.
I lent DeLillo's UNDERWORLD to a housemate's girlfriend and now she moved away. Might not see it back that fast I guess. Franc lent me his Jewish Mob non fiction book.
Survivor, I lent it to a friend of mine, who is now beggin for me to let Haunted out of my sight for a week or two.
Not. GOing. To. Happen.
The Alchemist
I absolutely love that book and find myself buying it for presents if I know the recipient will appreciate it. I've actually been wanting to read it again but it's been over a year since I last lent it out and I'm guessing it will be a lot longer before it's ever found.
I loaned Kurt Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle" to a good friend of mine because it's a worthwhile read. She ended up dropping it in the bathtub and that is the last time I will ever loan a book to anyone.
I can't loan books...
I absolutely love to give books as random gifts.. I often buy a couple copies to give away in the future (ie. I have 5 invisible monsters at home (the book, that is)... I mean, if I meet someone, I figure we better get this sorted out NOW... if you don't like this.. if you don't get this... then.. then.. we have nothing. I'm sorry.)...
I can't loan my books because I'm a freak about people marking them.. even slightly.. I can't read a book if it looks like someone else has read it.. had their hands on it... if i give someone a book, i don't want it back... but... if I ever loan you a book, you'll know I trust you, truly, madly, deeply, haha... you can't tell if my books have been read.. well.. except for house of leaves... i can't count the times i've torn through those pages... ...until the binding breaks...

I'll buy you a replacement copy if you need one. That's a great book, maybe my favorite of his (or tied for first with 'Sirens of Titan') and I can't bear that you loaning it bummed you on loaning books in general.
I'm serious.
I've loaned my first edition hb of 'Syrup' by Maxx Barry, as well as the one-x edition of 'Company' I bought three days before the official release. I loaned my signed hb of 'Survivor' but that was to Mom, and I don't think I'd loan that copy to someone I wasn't related to. Or some people I am. My first copy, the trade pb disappeared, so whoever I loaned it to can probably be thanked for me bothering to get the signed hardback.
I think 'Company' was probably my most recent loan. Or was it 'Identity Theory?' Oh, and I loaned out 'All The Beautiful Sinners' again. Hope it comes home, or if it doesn't that I can find another remaindered copy. Good book.
When we call soccer 'football' the terrorists have won.
I lent Survivor to the same person that I lent the first book in this thread to.
!
i always lend my books out to people, im not gonna bug them to get the book back but it'd still be nice haha.
well right now im lending out fight club to my uncle for him to re read
i lent out all my chuck p. books to my "girl" friend and shes read them all and is now a fan
i lent diary to my Girlfriend, and she never fully read it, guess she didnt like the style of the writing. thats too bad for her haha
Lent out to a friend
Kiss Me Judas - WCB
Syrup - Max Barry
Dermaphoria - Clevenger
Penny Dreadful - WCB
They liked them all except Penny Dreadful
I was talking about the cult and happened on bringing up Clevenger and Baer and their site over at the velvet. They liked the short story of Suffer The Fool by Baer and wanted to read more of him and I suggested Clevenger after they read KMJ and tossed them Syrup if they wanted something that was quick'n easy to read with some humor to it.
umberto eco's "name of the rose"... never got it back
antes ser rico e saudavel do que pobre e doente
I lent Invisible Monsters to a friend. I still haven't gotten it back. Thanks for the reminder.
you people do know, when you lend out books to people the first thing they do is take them into the bathroom
I lent The Virgin Suicides to Grady and White Teeth to Jason, and then they finished them at the same time, and traded them, and I haven't gotten either of them back yet.
There is hope, but not for us.
you people do know, when you lend out books to people the first thing they do is take them into the bathroom
Thats what disinfectant sprays are for when you get it back.
Thats what disinfectant sprays are for when you get it back.
those make the pages curl
those make the pages curl
You don't spray it all over like you were using a hose bro.
I loaned The Bride Stripped Bare to my sister over a year ago, and she passed it onto my Mum, who passed it onto her friend who had just lost her husband and wanted something to read...it's gone for good.
you people do know, when you lend out books to people the first thing they do is take them into the bathroom
Exactly - this is my problem with buying second hand books and getting books out from the library (well, that and there's never any good current books at the library that are not on loan when you want them). I'm not convinced disinfectant will do the trick.

I no longer lend books. Too much aggravation. Same for dvds. I will GIVE them to my brother, Flatbastard, but expecting them to come back was counterproductive.
