Any suggestions for a first J.G. Ballard book?

I personally hated Concrete Island, that's all I got.
Think for yourself. Question Authority.
Genki: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese. I've decided that I'm done with the classics for a little while, moving to something a little more modern.
I have posted this several times....has anyone read I, Lucifer???
Is it worth the read?
never heard of it
I finished Son of a Witch last night, and it was very good. It was good in a Lord of the Rings epic way, not like chuck. it ended without ever resolving the major and central conflict, but oh well. maybe gregory maguire will write another one in ten more years.

Written by Glen Duncan...I never heard of him either. It was given to me in a box of books by a friend. I never heard of him or the book and I thought someone could tell me to read it or not waste my time...guess I will find out on my own.
Thanks though for responding nat

i'd say give it at least a good 50 pages
I just bought a big ole huge North American Road Atlas. Maps kick ass.
All day yesterday, I looked up any place anyone mentioned on tv.
"Ahaa! They are just west of Madison!"
i'd say give it at least a good 50 pages
I gave over 50 and regreted every moment of it...don't read it.
Recently, up until even more so recently, I'd been buying books every single monday. I'm no three or four novels behind. I bought "Haunted" a few weeks ago (my first Chuck novel), and I've actually been reading and re-reading that quite a bit. Also, I've been reading some instructional texts for this little class I've been taking to polish my prose. And the other day, I bought a pack of Camels, and the nice-girl at the con. store gave me a matchbook....for free.
The Long Hard Road out of Hell... the Marilyn Manson autobiography... really freaking interesting, I'd recommend it... but after reading all of Chuck's books, I have no idea what to read next...
What do you like?
Anxiously waiting for Lydia Millet's Oh Pure and Radiant Heart to come in the mail from Amazon.
Oppenheimer in 2003 as a sign of the second coming.
Haruki Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle I was totally amazed by his Norwegian Wood and when I saw this book I just bought it without any hesitating. It's a big brick (600 pages) so I will have what to do for next month.

OR?
And on the cover of that one book - The cover alone made me almost not give it a chance. But then I read about the book and it was recommended because I rated Jesus' Son. Then - is when I started to consider it.
Only Revolutions
anyone picked up OR yet?
No, but I'm going out to Borders tonight- so excited! Though I'll probably get it from amazon in a few days... cheaper and all.
Only Revolutions
Oh Alright.
Yeah, that book is on my "need to buy soon" list. I plan on putting it in one of my next amazon orders - along with the full color version of House of Leaves (I'm going to give the one I have as a gift to someone I think
).
I just bought 'Only Revolutions' by Danielewski. I have started it, its pretty fucking good!
Went to see Black Dahlia today, decent film. Afterwards I stepped into a bookstore and did some casual browsing looking about for things. Came across two books and decided to go ahead and buy them. Won't be touching them for a few weeks since I have a ton of reading to catch up on but this is what I purchased
Leonard Cohen - Beautiful Losers
Mark Z. Danielewski - Only Revolutions.
Loved the first novel I read by Cohen (The Favorite Game) and Danielewski I still haven't read House of Leaves which I have a copy of sitting on my counter along with a dozen other books i've bought and haven't finished reading. I figured I'd just go ahead and pick up his new novel and get around to before christmas.
As of right now i'm half way through Nick Cave's novel (And The Ass Saw The Angel) and i'm loving it. Like his music and loving his prose in his novel even more. Fucking writes some colorful insane shit.
Crash was the first that I had read, it is one of his most talked about so it was what I gravitated to. Empire of the Sun is probably my favorite but wouldn't be the first "Ballard" to take off the shelf, it is autobiographical for one but most importantly it doesn't prepare you for some of the content that he often pursues in much of his books, such as dystopia. This is why I would recommend Crash as the first book to read of his, highly controversial but also vintage Ballard.
