what books did you just buy?
What is Winter's Bone, on a scale of 1 to 10?
Also, hello Bug.
Also, hello Bug.
After I read it, I put everything else he ever wrote into my shopping cart. I guess that deserves at least an 8, though I didn't love it in the way I love Room, which I read, and then upon finishing it immediately turned back to page one and am on my second read, this time savoring it slowly, taking my time, I know I'll be heartbroken once it ends. However, I had seen the movie first, and that partially maybe possibly sucked some of the life force away from my reading. I've made myself a promise not to watch movies based on books any longer, until I've read the book first.
Hello labelleza. Kisses.
Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides
The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett
Finally! You have to read The Thin Man asap. You're gonna love how much of a smartass Nick is.
Yeah, I know! I was pretty excited that I found it at the discount book store. Dollar for each book and they look brand new. I'm reading The Maltese Falcon right now among other books too but I will definitely attack The Thin Man soon.
Juliet, Naakt (Juliet, Naked) by Nick Hornby.
11/22/63 and Jesus' Son
^good choices.
just got a bunch of PKD (Ubik, Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep, etc.) and a few Cormac McCarthy too, Child of God and Suttree

Hey Richard !

As a Machine & Parts - Caleb J. Ross (an actual ink & paper book!)
This is why we can't have nice things.
Just bought The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
"Accept the things you cannot change; Change the things you cannot accept."
zandre - All of our recommendations and you bought that... Come on man!
And - Tuff - I think you'll like that one.
I'm looking forward to it arriving.
This is why we can't have nice things.
It's a pretty slim book though. You'll finish it in a day... two at the most. You're probably reading a ton right now right?
I've been making myself stick to one book at at time lately, until I finish all of the books that I am currently reading. I'm hoping that my timing works out so that it arrives when I'm just about done with the one I'm on.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Oh I was referring to you recovering and not being able to do all that much.
The Color Purple
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The Birth of Venus
The Secret History
and some analysis/critique of Beowulf ( since I'm reading Grendel I wanted some sort of refresher on Beowulf)
So painful to read.
I don't think I've been able to watch the movie since I read the book. It just goes, "Fuck you, movie! Here's how this story ought to be told," and then pees all over it to show its dominance.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest had been for a long time one of my very favorite movies.

I often fantasize about teaching myself Old English, and then reading the original.
Caitlin R. Kiernan wrote the novelization of the movie version of Beowulf.

I mostly bought the color purple for my mother, if I get around to it I'm sure I'd want to throw the book everywhere. I know we read beowulf in my seventh grade class but I don't remember shit.

I read The Color Purple last year and I enjoyed it. I guess that isn't saying much since many of the books I enjoy people bitch about around here.
Oh, it's good. Just painful.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Well I know the story and I know it's gonna be painful.
Nothing in the end would mean much without all the pain getting there.
I just bought Pygmy, which I loved by the way, as well as Kingdom of Fear and Generation of Swine by HST. Got to love amazon, some of these can literally be purchased for 50 cents.
Just bought Flashover by Gordon Highland. Will be starting it either before or after I reread The Thin Man.
Just ordered:
- Invisible Monsters Remix
- I Didn't Mean to Be Kevin by Caleb J. Ross
- Praise of Motherhood by Phil Jourdan
- Zombie Bake-Off by Stephen Graham Jones
- By the Time We Leave Here, We'll be Friends by J. David Osborne
- Flex Mentallo by Grant Morrison
- The Night Season by Chelsea Cain
J. David Osborne's book, I read a while back on my nook. I loved it so I wanted to have a pbook of it too.
Also ordered - Big Trouble in Little China DVD. Yeah!
Borrowed, not bought:
White Fortress by Orhan Pamuk
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
Problems of Philosophy by Bertran Russell
Waiting for the Nova Parade. But now that I'm free I went to the library again and will resume my fantastic reading pace.
Oh, I've been meaning to read In Cold Blood for so long. I bought it the day after I finished Breakfast at Tiffany's. Granted they are two very different books, but I love Capote's writing style. And, I love true crime. So I knew I would like In Cold Blood. But, I still haven't read it.
My exact thoughts. And Capote was on HBO the other day and I realised I've yet to read In Cold Blood. So I got it.
Nice! Let us know what you think. I have about 10 books fighting for my number 2 position in the to-read pile. Phil's is number 1 right now after reading the first page last night.
It's getting better. The novel in progress is a-may-zing.
Oh, I was talking about Praise of Motherhood.
I haven't bought any actual print books in so long. And Praise wasn't available for nook until just recently. I bought a bunch of print books just a little bit ago (including Praise of Motherhood). And last night I bought the nook version. So now I have two copies - no excuses!
I was talking about it too. And then digressed to Phil's next book.
Oh haha. He crushed me instantly with that first page.
Just wait till you get to stronger chapters. Six, for instance. Or the last page. The last page could've been even better, but he took out a sentence "as it would've sounded too emotional". When you finish the book, I'll tell you which.
I just picked up House of Leaves, so I think I'm gonna give that another shot. I had rented it about 6 years ago and felt pretty overwhelmed by it.

Speaking of, I don't think Phil would mind me embedding this clip I grabbed of him last month.

Irina created a Praise of Motherhood thread a while back. I'll let you post the video in there.

I ordered this book:

I was really looking forward to spending tomorrow reading it. But amazon prime free two day shipping has failed me. It should have been here yesterday, but it's still not here. It was last seen leaving Louisville, KY at 1:14pm today. This annoys me.

My love for Donald Duck (been reading it all my life) combined with my love for France/French, has led to me ordering a year's membership to Mickey Parade Géant. I'll get one every 2 months, and already I can't wait. EXCITED!

OH MY GOD IMKE WANT!!
I was trying to remember who loved the Donald Duck comics! Next time I'm in the lil old bookstore I will look for some for you Imke.
=O! Awesome!
Philippe Djian - Zone Erogene
Henry Miller - Tropic Of Cancer
.I'm beginning to believe that anything I do to extend my life is just going to be outweighed by the agony of living it.
I preordered two that I'm so stoked about. I've never been a "collector," buying books for future value. But I bought these two for those reasons alone. I'm not sure if I got them. I'm assuming that if the number sells out, they are first come first served. Hopefully I preordered in time.
The first Hardcover printing of American Psycho released in the States (I'm not sure if there has been anywhere else). 200 are being released - signed and numbered by BEE. I preordered and the price must have dropped for a day because I'm paying about $40 less than they're asking right now. I'm not sure what the cover is supposed to be - I kind of don't like it.

The rerelease of The Fifty Year Sword: The Deluxe Edition. In comes in a nice wood box. I think they are releasing 1,000 of these signed and numbered by MZD. The last time he did this, they are selling on ebay for $600+. The same thing happened with this one, I preordered and the price went down to $32, now they are asking $60 with a list of $100. FYI - there is a normal hardcover of this for sale now that is like $15.

I bought Chet Baker's As Though I Had Wings and had a hipster moment at a hipster joint, wearing hipster shoes, drinking hipster beer, talking to hipster employees that do hipster things.

The Virgin Suicides for the Nook.
