There is this one bookshop in the city that I really cant goin without buying at least one book. Its an independent bookstore run by booklovers. The staff are awesome and I go out of my way to buy as many books off them as I can. Last week they knew it was my birthday and they got me a box of choclates!
I usually stop at the book store on Fridays. But I have so many books to read in my pile that I only allow myself to buy one... It's an internal struggle.
So I went in today - I walked around, grabbed one then two then three. I'm walking around with a friggin armful then. I go over to the Starbucks in the store and sit down. And I start yelling at myself. Not really loud, but more like a mumble. "What did you agree to? What the fuck are you doing with all of these books? You have to put some back!"
So after much arguing and procrastinating - I put all but one back.
I'm embarrassed to say what it is because I'm officially obsessed...
Yes yes, I bought more Bukowski - Ham on Rye
ah, yes, Ham on Rye.
i am yet to read this one, my Bukowski brother. but it's sitting on my dresser, along with Hollywood, which i am also yet to read.
I'm trying to read them in order. But now I must force myself to put a different book in between each Bukowski. I don't want to read all of his novels in a month. lol

Thats awesome and Happy be-lated* Birthday dude. All we have here is Chapters the used book sotres cost the same as new books at chapters and If im gonna dish out 14 - 20 dollers on a book its gonna be new not with pages ready to fall out. I wish there was a good book store here like the one you talk about.
When I lived in Fredericton for a bit they had a awesome bookstore and it was so nice. Anything you wanted they would get it for you within 2 weeks. That is if they didnt have it.
What kind of Choclates?
Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell and The Ominivore's Delemma by Michael Pollan
-ANDY
I had to make that tough decision a week or so ago, and Bukowski was one of the few that didn't make the cut. I am really really interested in reading his work, but I cut my Amazon shopping cart down from 7 books to 3.
One of these days Bukowski will make the cut.
I put him off for years and just recently read him for the first time. Now I'm obsessed.
You owe yourself to go and get something buy him.
i'm in the same boat as Pete. he' been one of those authors that i've thought i'd dig, and everything i heard suggestedi would enjoy his attitudes and themes etc, but i just never bought anything. and then a couple of months ago i read Post Office.
on side note, Bazell's gonna see a relatively large spike in his book's sales in the next quarter of royalities he recieves (if that's how it happens in the book world). and it's all thank to nearly everyone on the forum buying Reaper over the last couple of months.
I just found an advanced printing copy(or something like that)of Beat The Reaper at a used book store for 50 cents.

You can't see it, but in the corner it says "Coming In January 2009." And on the back it says "ADVANCE READING COPY. UNCORRECTED PROOF. NOT FOR SALE."
I'm pretty stoked I found this.
Let's start the bidding at $100.

"Am I cruel? Probably. Is she an idiot? Yes." -jane s.

You lucky son of a bitch!!
But I do love the callback to the "Tell All" cocksucker.
HAHA I'm glad you got that. I was a little worried someone would think I was serious.

Just got a shit ton of books. I dont know why I do it to myself, it seems when I buy more than one at at time I read none of them.
The Bell Jar- because its probably definitely required reading
Robinson Crusoe- for almost the same reason, I heard the title three times in one week
Obama Zombies- Because Ill read anything that has "zombie" in the title and I like statistics
What a Way to Go- to fuel my undying curiosity regarding anything torture
Gristle- my man is a chef in training and refuses to read anything but cookbooks
Dermaphoria- some cunt stole my copy and I needed another
Yes yes, I bought more Bukowski - Ham on Rye
In my opinion, this is Bukowski's best novel. Maybe because the newer Bukowski isn't as good as vintage Bukowksi--and vintage Bukowski has a lot of repetition with the booze and the sex(again, my opinion). Ham on Rye offers something a little different. Great choice!
"Plus, if I go too long without writing I start to turn into a real asshole." -misterwoe

After I read Women - I decided I wanted to read his novels in the order that he wrote them. It was the next one in line to buy.
Jim Thompson's, A Swell Looking Babe.

Women, and Tales of Ordinary Madness changed my life.
Tales of Ordinary Madness just got put on my amazon wishlist.
edit - I meant it made my wishlist based on your recommendation.
I fiiiinally ordered Knockemstiff! I'm so excited!
such a great book, Imke.
That's what people keep telling me! It's been driving me crazy!
The Amber Spyglass.
Borders didn't have it individually, and Barnes and Noble only had one, and it was in the Juvi section, so I had to look through the other two to make sure the books hadn't been tampered with for safer child consumption.

Tales of Ordinary Madness was the first thing of Buk I've read, which is why it was a revelation to me. That said, I highly recommend reading Betting on the Muse, first. Far superior work in my opinion.
I actually had Betting on the Muse in my wishlist. I wanted to buy a short story/poem collection by him. This was the next one of those I was gonna buy.
American Tabloid by James Ellroy
The Cold Six Thousand by James Ellroy
Blood's a Rover by James Ellroy
And for Matt because he likes matching covers...

Are those the New Zealand covers? UK? Either way, nice.
I just bought and started 'Salem's Lot, thanks to the help from my buddies in the Vampire Lit thread, and the selection at Half Priced Books.
"There’s no use in denying it: this has been a bad week. I’ve started drinking my own urine." -Patrick Bateman
They're UK versions. Haven't actually been publihed yet. I pre-ordered them.
Yeah those Ellroy covers are sick. I hate the fact that my Black Dahlia cover is the movie tie-in. I love beautiful artwork on covers. And I hate movie tie-ins.

don't act like you don't love the matching covers, man!
yes, i do love it when you get the re-released paperbacks that match. it looks nice. i also just generally like good looking cover art.
and as Pete just said, i too, fucking despise movie tie-in covers. they shit me up the wall, especially when it's all you can get your hands on.
I tend to walk away from movie book covers! I dont care how good the book might be! I searched and searched for Shutter Island and The Road not in movies cover! I did find them great books!
I went to the book store to buy my allotted one book. Epic fail.
I left with:
- Hollywood by Charles Bukowski
- Ask the Dust by John Fante
- The Lie Chad Kultgan
- Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell (I bought this for somebody because they have to read it. I keep telling them, but they haven't bought it yet.)
Well, I guess buying four books is better than spending the money on alcohol. lol

I wish I had friends that would buy me books like that.
I DID have a friend buy me a book for Christmas but it was like, Wifey 4 Life or some shit. I couldn't fathom why she'd get me that, but she was all "It's a book. They're all the same."

That's a person that needs to read a good book right there!
I have friends that will tell me a list of books they've read and some of the books will be amazing. But the others will be garbage. And they will always tell me about the garbage ones. I'm not pretentious or anything, but when somebody is telling me how awesome a book called "Wifey 4 Life" is and then I find out that they've read The Gargoyle or something equally good, it really disturbs me.

Well see, my friends are barely literate. (Not really, but you know what I mean.) Some of my school-friends read a bit, but most of them say they love Dan Brown and John Grisham. Even the English majors tell me that garbage. I am literarily alone here.
I feel your pain.
Most of my friends make fun of me for reading a lot.
They think it sounds cool when they say, "Yeah... FUCK READING!"
Haha. When my friends and I argue, it usually ends with them saying something like, "Ok you know what? Why don't you go read a book or whatever it is you do."
Also, I got in trouble as a kid for reading too much. I mean, what parent punishes a kid for reading? (Ok, I was reading like... allthetime.)
ME TOO!
You know in movies when you see kids with their text books open but a comic book secretly stashed inside. That was me, but with like Stephen King or something. I got yelled at by the teachers a lot for that.

BarcaMan would know.
I also want to send things. I have a book I want to give to Jane.

Tuffy the Dump Truck may rarely increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The risk may be greater if you have heart disease or increased risk for heart disease (for example, due to smoking, family history of heart disease, or conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes), or with longer use. Tuffy should not be taken right before or after heart bypass surgery. Also, Tuffy may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. This effect can occur without warning symptoms at any time while taking Tuffy. Older adults may be at higher risk for this effect. (See also Precautions and Drug Interactions sections.) Stop taking Tuffy and get medical help right away if you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody or black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech. Ask your doctor if Tuffy is right for you.
