"They express their individuality by wearing the same clothes reading the same books listening to the same music and hanging around in a big group - individulas finding safety in numbers - even God laughed at that one" Chuck Palahniuk
Did you make him write the intro of Nobokov's Lolita on the signature page?
I met Stephen King a couple years back. I had him make a reinactment of the Battle of Midway using popsicle sticks, matches, macaroni, glue and buttons on the back cover of IT. I then had him light the matches and catch the macaroni battleships on fire.

No I asked him to write Eoin - Finish the book ya Cunt = and he did.
if that makes me wrong - so be it etc etc..............

I'm so jealous of Derek and David Sedaris =(
i wonder why no one is more interested/jealous of me meeting a relatively unknown australian short story writer? it's simply bizarre. poor Sala.
I haven't met any authors really. A few years back my mom dated this guy, Tom Stoner, who has one book published (as far as I know only one) titled The Comfort of Our Kind. He was going to name it Between the Devil and My Mother, but his publisher nixed it, I guess. He was sill finishing up writing the book when she was seeing him and he gave me a copy of his manuscript. I talked to him on the phone a few times, didn't meet him face to face.
I haven't met anyone well know or adored though.
Sometimes I miss Luddy Dunn. I wish she'd come back.
I met Dave Eggers. He didn't smile and he was shy and arrogant but a nice guy. We talked Where The Wild Things Are for a minute. It was cool.
Then i sat on the phone with James Ellroy for like 1/2 an hour, it was cool as shit. He was funny and i was scared that any second he was gonna get mad and hang up but he didn't. It was very intimidating.
Me too. I was just thinking about this the other day when I was looking over my bookshelf and saw her book there.

old cultie from those mysterious old days?
She was super cool. Author of a bunch of books. Her real name is Karen Novak.
Five Mile House was her big one when she was here.

But she had to stop coming so she could work on her current novel and this place was too distracting. Can't blame her. haha
this place is fucking distracting. but it's awesome, and sometimes the distraction is welcome. i'm finding more of a balance these days though. getting plenty of work done as well as culting my ass off.
so, is she a good writer? what would you recommend, Pete? five mile house, or is there something better?

Innocence is better than Five Mile House.
I've only read Five Mile House and I really liked it. It's not Palahniuk-esque writing though. So some people might not dig it. But I really liked it.
Nate - I need to check out Innocence then? Added to my wishlist.
i think it's a series, Pete. well, it's the same narrator, or same main character--Leslie Stone. and i think there's another book with the same character as well called The Wilderness. and she has another book called Ordinary Monsters, buti'm not sure if that's the same character or not.
Leslie Stone is her main character in them, but you don't have to read them in order. They are called Leslie Stone novels though.
d-d-d-d-double post!
cool. screw Palahniukian anyway. i'm over palahniuhian novels at the moment. i'm even over the term. i'm gonna drop innocence in my basket, see how it goes. support and old cultie.
I'm sure if she was here still she would thank you!

I liked Innocence because of it's non-linear storytelling. It's like she starts off with the prologue to the story and the epilogue of the story running parallel and at the end of the book they kind of meet in the middle sort of thing.
Oh, I like when books try stuff like that. I'm definitely going to be ordering that one soon then.

I met my first author today, and it was quite a suprise. His name is Michael Sala, his name is Michael Sala. He's the tutor for my creative writing course this semester. He's a short story writer and got a story published in last years edition of Best Australian Stories, which is pretty cool. He was pretty cool too. So excited. I asked him I'd he'd read Amy hempel becaus he was championing Carver, and it turned out he hadn't, so I'm bringing him a copy of her collected stories next week. Ha!
