what authors have you met?
Hi just wanna know what authors anyone here have met before?? I met Chuck four years ago - on monday I'll get to meet Bret Easton Ellis and 2weeks after I'll get to meet Irvine Welsh - just wanna know cause my friends dont read much they dont share my excitement - when i say im going to see an author they say "what does he do? stand up?"
to me its like seeing ur fav band but actually getting to meet the lead singer - share ur stories if u want
"They express their individuality by wearing the same clothes reading the same books listening to the same music and hanging around in a big group - individulas finding safety in numbers - even God laughed at that one" Chuck Palahniuk
class - i swear when i went up to Chuck my whole body stared trembling - such are the weak in front of Gods
"They express their individuality by wearing the same clothes reading the same books listening to the same music and hanging around in a big group - individulas finding safety in numbers - even God laughed at that one" Chuck Palahniuk
I actually met Terry Brooks. I've never read any of his books, but my mom is a huge fan & she went to a signing at a local library. So, we get there & she realized that she didn't have any of the books for him to sign, so she asked me to go and get the books for her. I drove really, really fast and got there just in time for him to sign them.
He was really chatty and nice. Someone, I don't remember who, asked him if he had any weird fans and then he got me all star struck cos he said "I was having lunch with my good friend, Dean Koontz, and he said he gets fanmail from guys in prison. I don't get anything like that, no."
That's the only author I've met so far, the only story I've got.
Also, I'll add that I would be terrified as fuck to meet any of my favorite authors. I wouldn't want to, really! I'm sure as time progresses I will eventually meet someone I read, but it would scare the living shit out of me (in a good way, if that makes any sense!) to walk up to someone who's work I enjoy and be all "Yo! I'm a fan." It'd come out like "H-h-hurrrr durrr!"
I've met China Mieville, Francisco Goldman, Juan Gabriel Vasquez, and a few others I can't remember.

I asked Chuck - You take other peoples horror stories - ie what ud never tell anyone - and put them in your books - so I asked him whats the worst thing he'd ever done?? - you could see he knew but wouldnt say lthe truth but if u ever meet him tell him your name is Katy Ketcherson or if ur a guy that ur dating her and see how he reacts
"They express their individuality by wearing the same clothes reading the same books listening to the same music and hanging around in a big group - individulas finding safety in numbers - even God laughed at that one" Chuck Palahniuk
i have to get on 3 buses on monday 2hrs long each to get 2 where the Bret reading is 150 miles and stay in a hostel - none of my mates will go i have to explain it in movie terms as i you know the film Fight Club - yea - he wrote that - you know American Psycho - yea - this guy wrote that - you kno Trainspotting yea - well he wrote that - and still I get laughed at - madness - if youve ever got laughed at for going to a book reading and not anightclub i know ur pain

Richard Marchinko, John Ringo, David Drake, and Michael Z. Williamson.
Richard Marchinko was a short pudgy bastard, but pretty cool to talk to. John Ringo is certifiable, and awesome to listen to (he did a live reading of an excerpt of one of his soon to be published books), David Drake was quiet and a bit intense. Williamson was just plain funny, and the dude can shoot like nobody's business. We spent some time on a range after a Libertycon a few years back.
Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me alone.

I really would like to meet Marcinko. His books are one of my favorite guilty reading pleasures.

Bradbury signs the books at the Mystery bookstore in Westwood, too.
I was right in front of Clevenger! That was at the Beverly Hills library, right? I told Chuck that Clevenger was behind me and he kind of dismissed me in his eagerness to meet Clev!
Earlier, I was in line behind Wendy Dale who was saving a spot for Craig and I happened to have his book with me. When Craig showed up up Wendy Dale said "Hey, you have TWO fans, me and her." Pointing to me. It was pretty funny.
Went to see David Simon author of Homicide and creator of The Wire here last year there were about 2000 people in a huge hall most Ive ever seen at a book reading - but the guy interviewing him was a gimp sucks when they ask dumb questions you actually feel embarrassed that he has to answer.

I once met Chuck Palahniuk in Galway.

Brets there on monday at the Hotel Meyrick Eyre Square- you going?

ummm nooo Galway, Ireland lol

Whoa, that's always weird when you figure out when someone you know was in the same place as you at the same time before you knew them (well, you know, somewhere that's not work or school).
My favorite part of that reading is when Chuck tried to get Craig to come up or at least stand up and take a bow, and he looked like he wanted to disappear.

It is weird, and when I finally met you you were wearing a floofy wedding dress!
That was funny. I was sitting next to him and tried to wave my copy of TCH when Chuck said that and Clev grabbed it and hissed at me! Ha!
chuck of course, clevenger, chris cleave, dave cullen, and in a few weeks mark z. danielewski.

I could never ever meet any of my favorite authors and retain any dignity. The few artists I've met showed that I was just really really good at being awkward.

So no. I'll just worship my literary gods from afar, thankyouverymuch.
Andrew Motion, Alice Sebold and a handful of local authors.
I wish I wasn't so star-struck meeting Alice Sebold, but it didn't really matter because our conversation only lasted about a minute. I hate the conveyorbelt-like process at signings. I don't see there being any other way than that, but it sucks.

I got to pass a message from Clev to Chuck and it made my literary millennium. This was all Mirka's doing.
You know in all the years I've been here I've never been sigged?

Yes, look for an interview with MZD for the first of September, going to dig into the 10 year anniversary of HoL, some Revolutions talk, and try to get some insight into his upcoming book...

very fucking cool, Kasey. look forward to it.

YES. HE WAS SWEATY AND VIRILE. BUT MOSTLY TIRED.
met Bret Eston Ellis got ridiculously drunk and tried to ask him 20 questions in one breath - i was a complete jabbering buffoon - but he was a complete legend - gave him my old copy of The Devils Dictionary thought he could use it for one of his epigrams - hopefully

Rick Riordan came to my middle school once. The regular English class had gotten to study The Lightning Thief so they were all up to speed, but I was in GT and they made us read Hatchet instead, so we were a little out of the loop. Still, it was pretty exciting to listen to Riordan tell us amusing stories about the rejection letters he got. That was before I decided I wanted to take up writing and I think it really helped influence my decision.
Also, I met Michael Neff in 2009 and got a signed copy of his book, which I'm not going to give a comment on in a public forum because it might come back to bite me in the butt.
The only Author I can really attest to meeting was Martin Atkins back during SXSW. He is more known as a musician but I bought his new book on touring and talked to him for a bit. Hes a really nice guy.

on my copy of American Psycho I asked Bret to write the 1st lines of my novel -in progress - because i have a strong Irish accent i had to say each word very slowly at the end I asked him did he recognise it from anywhere? it took him a long time until he had his "ahhhhhh" moment the 1st line of my book is "They say you're a sick young man, they say you're a spiteful young man, they say you're an unattractive young man - Fuck Them - that's what you say........"
It's a second person narrative twist of an old classic - Im sure lots of people here will get it quicker than him

Dostoevsky's Notes from the Underground?
CORRECT! you win the speed round lol i knew someone here would get it straight away - when Bret was stuck I said ill give you a clue then I turned his own book two pages away from the inside title with the Notes from the Underground epigram in American Psycho and he went - "ahhhhhhhhhh" - Easily one of the best moments of my life

We should talk. Like on the telephone.
And all the time. But totally not in a creepy way. :]

Nice! I've never read the full story. But I have read the first few pages quite a few times. I really like them.
Ive met:
Chuck Palahniuk in Galway Iowa! (Frank was there too)
Irvine Welsh (Didnt like at all)
John Connolly (we are friends now)
Nick Flynn (He asked me how many AA meetings do I go to a week. I said 5 in 10 years)
David Sedaris (Hes awesome signed all my books and said Anyone that sells candy is good his eyes) I felt like asking him for his sisters phonenumber.
Ken Bruen (he thinks Im awesome)
Bret Easton Ellis (I gave him candy, a book, a moleskin and the Cujo Poker pic)
and John Boyne, he was signing copies of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. He asked this old lady what name would he write on her book, she said ...... John Boyne. I Lolled, then I felt bad.
Irvine Welsh (Didnt like at all)
Ooh kiss and tell please, Barca!

I'm not a huge fan of him but since he was in Galway city I decided to go along. It was in a pub on a Sunday morning and with your ticket you got a free breakfast while he read. It was advertised as a reading and signing but all he did was read, didnt say anything else just read and thats it. Then when he was done he sat in a corner surrounded by his friends and this girl who was at my table was a huge fan. She asked him to sign her book. He took it off her signed it didnt personalise it or anything then hand it back. I felt really bad for her since you could see how dissapointed she was.
Also wheres my kiss?
Yeah, that's pretty shitty of him. Don't like his writing style anyway.
When I met David Carradine at a signing he was really grumpy. He signed my photograph, but didn't even say Hi, let alone pose for a photo. I don't want to speak ill of the dead but he was a f'ing misery guts.
Oh and
