Trash
Everyone likes to read a little trash now and then. If you don't, you're probably in denial.
Having said that, trash is obviously subjective. But I think we may all agree that 50 Shades of Grey is T.R.A.S.H. Still, I do admit I read the first installment in less than a week. Anyone read the second and third parts yet?
I am also, rather ashamedly, looking forward to getting my hands on Amanda Knox's book. Probably won't bother with Raffaele Sollecito's, he seems like a real drip.
How about you guyz?
PS. Tuffy read this, tee hee!:

EDIT: I've got an overwhelming sense of deja vu that I (or someone else) may have created this thread before. Either way, please humour me and get stuck in!
That's like the definition of trash. haha
I used to love Richard Marcinko's books. He wrote all the Seal Team 6 books. I think the first one was more of a biography and was mostly true, so that wouldn't be trash. But the others definitely were trash.
Wow, looks like he churned out one a year! Gotta give him some credit for all those naval awards though. His Wikipedia page also says they got a ghostwriter to co-write the subsequent books. Being a ghostwriter sounds like it could be such a fun dayjob.
When I was a teenager I read all of the Dawson's Creek "novels." I only really remember one of them though, they went skiing and played strip poker in a hot tub. Similarly, my schoolfriend read over a hundred Sweet Valley High books in the hope of one of them doing the dirty with their boyfriends. Needless to say, she was disappointed. They took up a whole book case as well.
I used to read this guy like crazy:

He's written tons and tons of books and i probably read half of them in jr high and high school.
I had a lot of R.L. Stine books (translated to Dutch), which I absolutely loved when I was younger. I read the one about a deserted beach house many many times. It included a shark attack, which was one of my favorite parts.
Ah, here it is:

EDIT_
I wonder where they're at, because I would like to have them actually. Sentimental value, haha.
Ah, good old R.L Stine - universally hated by school teachers (and universally revered by middle schoolers).

Christopher Pike! Blast from the past!
Love the cover art, I want one in poster form!

Oh man, me too!
Slumber Party, Weekend, Chain Letter, etc. I loved that crap when I was a kid.
I read trash every now and then for sure. I read all the 50 Shades of Grey books (holy cow, trashy as crap!). I read that Drew Barrymore story, too, haha. Hmmm what else...

I should be really ashamed of the Jude Deveraux books, but whatever, I found them at a yard sale and I've had them for about 20 years. I read them whenever I'm really sick and have to stay in bed.
Hey I also read the first 6 books in the Gossip Girl series.
Irina - How did they compare to the show?
The show is very very different. In the books, Vanessa is a bald goth, for instance, who has nothing in common with the look-at-me-I'm-so-hip attitude in the show. And I think they added a lot of stuff. Dan had a few homoerotic experiences before Vanessa, and they all go to college.
According to Wikipedia, all 11 novels take place before and around graduation.
And I like the show more. Because DESIGNER CLOTHES!

Haha, I love reading trash when I'm ill too!
When I was little and bed-ridden my Mum used to read me a big, illustrated copy of Five Children and It (not trash). We'd start at the beginning every time and only get to the same place in the book from the last time I was ill, never to progress further. I'll have to carry on the tradition when I have kids (and finish it!).
Have you read any Virginia Andrews?

Lord, have I ever!
I started with the Dollanger series when I was twelve and not allowed to read them (hehe, I was a sneaky thing when it came to reading), then as a teenager I worked through the Landry and Casteel series. My favorite has to be the stand alone My Sweet Audrina. All of her stories are so bizarre, and I believe the more recent books (which I haven't read) have been written by ghost writers for several years. I own all of the Dollanger, Landry, and Casteels in paperback and forgot to mention them in this thread. Trashy treasures for sure!
P.S. I love the idea of that tradition from when you were ill as a child.

Midnight Club was a good one. And i remember one where they were on a cruise and there was a killer with them. I want to go find some of these and read them again. Christopher Pike is partially responsible for who i am today.

Judging from her novel synopses, they seem to get more messed up as they go along.
Shame she's dead, someone should've made a documentary about her. I bet she lived in an old large house, with dust sheets, locked doors and screaming ghosts!
Dan Brown books. They're fun. Also, shitty Tom Clancy and "Tom Clancy" novels. It's like watching a good action show. Some are too poorly written, though.
Si vis pacem, para bellum

I am not ashamed.
I also read this:

And this:

This is why we can't have nice things.
i read all his books.
I also read quite a few books by Coelho. I was 13-14 and could still tell what kind of people they were written for.
I've read some trash but I can't think of them right now. I usually put books down if they don't interest me at all. If this topic was about movies I could go on for days.
Is he considered trash?
Yeah, that's the general opinion, even though his books are still bestsellers.
Probably not the same class of trash as Sandra Brown, but trash nonetheless.
I think it's unfair that he's seen like that. Granted I've only read Veronika Decides to Die, which I thought was great. Snobs just like to label stuff that does well and is enjoyed by a wider demographic.
Well I did like 11 minutes perhaps too much. I was 13 and that triggered a very stupid envisioned career choice, but that doesn't even belong in the embarrassing admissions thread.
i wished it could say it was long ago that i´ve read this one but it was actually last month.

Is he considered trash?
If we're talking about the guy who wrote The Alchemist, I'm wondering the same thing.
Many years ago The Alchemist was a book club book here. I thought it was okay.
The language in that book is so basic that I had to stop reading it. It's ridiculously childish. The ideas are great, but it's a bunch of short sentences.
Like Hemingway?
Can't say I've read much Hemingway. I tried that too, and didn't like it. Perhaps that's why.
What about Palahniuk?
I like Hemingway!
But yeah, The Alchemist is exactly as described. I couldn't understand the hype. Perhaps it's because it's an easy read?

Sometimes when the main character sits in a chair, you just have to write
Joe sat in a chair.
They don't all have to be gold.

This was amusing.

Now you know The Rest Of The Story.

Haha, quite right!
...but I have to admit that I gave up on Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises. It wasn't that bad, but I didn't really like the characters and found the writing style a bit tiresome. Sorry Hemingway!
I'd no idea it had that Fiesta added to the title.
Nor I.
Special UK Party Edition?
This is why we can't have nice things.
There was one little bit at the very end of The Sun Also Rises that made the whole tediousness of the book worth it.

I do not lie.
Special UK Edition With Added Chapters!
This is why we can't have nice things.
Director's cut.
I have been dipping in and out of a book called Heaven and Mel about a guy who made a film with Mel Gibson and how crazy Mel Gibson is. I think it's been a while since I read anything that's all out trash but some stuff in here looks tempting. Especially that Drew Barrymore book!
That book sounds awesome, Amii. I really enjoyed reading those recent tabloid articles about their feud. Still, I think it's a bit cheap that he had to go and write a book about Mel though. I notice that the author hasn't had any writing credits for 6 years.

SOON.
Yes!
Just read that she's going to face a retrial!
I watched a Lifetime movie about her starring Hayden Panettiere and it was brilliant. Highly recommended trash.
SOON.
Apparently she's going back to trial, because Italians don't give up.
Edit: Too slow
Ooooooh, just scraped ahead of you there Fano! Fastest fingers on The Cult.
I was going to say something mildly inappropriate, but I'll pass

I read Sandra Brown's Breath of Scandal when I was 15. I can't think of any recent trash though, maybe free erotica for Kindle...
