Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat by Andrez Bergen
July's book club is for Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat by Andrez Bergen. Think sci-fi noir with a heavy dose of humor. Andrez will be taking part in the discussion.
To help ensure a great discussion, Another Sky Press is offering a number of free copies to interested members of this site. No strings attached - though we do hope you take part in the book club discussion, since that's the purpose of this offer.
Unfortunately, this offer only extends to people living within the US. If you require international shipping, you can still get a free book, but will need to cover shipping. Sorry about that. There are a limited number of copies being given out, so first come, first served.
MORE ABOUT Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat:
Cut to Melbourne, Australia–the most glamorous city in the world. It also happens to be the only one left standing, but nevermind that, we’re there now and I’d like you to meet your narrator, a certain Floyd Maquina, a likable chap with one hell of a story to share. See, the powers that be are knuckling down on the Deviant menace that plagues the city, and our boy Floyd’s unknowingly got himself in the thick of it. Cue guns, intrigue, kidnappings, conspiracy and all sorts of general mayhem that make for cracking good headlines.
Does Floyd stop the bad guys? Does he get the girl? Does he make Humphrey Bogart proud? Grab some popcorn and read on.

I'm interested in this.
I'll be the first jerk to ask, is there a Kindle edition????

This is why we can't have nice things.
Actually, there are pdf, epub, and mobi (kindle) versions. They aren't officially for sale yet, though -- but will be very soon.
I can have the file emailed to your kindle address if you provide it via PM.
JKabol - you rock.

Cheers, Kristopher - and, yep, I'd love to get into the thick of things. Bearing a thick skin as well, I hope.

(there are plenty of broke as ish cultists, so i'll get one on my own and leave the free ones to those in need of the free ones.)
Thanks, JKabol - and wunderbar to see this kind of philosophy in action!

Forgot to say above how chuffed & honoured I am that you're going to take a look at TSMG, and I hope you enjoy the ride.
And, by the way, here's the cover of the novel (by American illustrator Scott Campbell) in case anyone here is curious.

Hope I get to read this book. Looks good.
I hope you do too, audreythirteen.
Thanks for the nice comment!
BTW, this is p'raps not the most professional visual ditty in the world, but something I strung together as a bit of a teaser...
Some of the clips are sourced from flicks very influential on TSMG.

hmm. the hunt continues..
earlier in the week, i ordered never let me go for jen, as she found the movie touching; and we kind of have a silent secret agreement that i wont beige buy books anymore. so i wasnt in time to get the last copy on amazon. (though, i did add it to my wish list so they'll let me know when more become available.)
one review thus far, so the book is definitely out there. not so surprising, though, is that the reviewer is in melbourne Ü
so. hit the barnes store website. they say it's available. they also said will baer's "godspeed" was available for six or seven months and that's how long they held my money before issuing a refund haha. so i called and they didnt have any in stock and suggested that i would have to order it online.
borders doesnt have it, nether does booksamill. so, now it's the waiting game, waiting on amazon.
i'll hit yaw monday if nothing comes about by then. you may have to send me a copy to little rock and then i'll send it to matt in aussie who will in tow send it to richard in chicago who can send it to brandon in the kc and on....
later

Kabol - you can buy a printed copy at the site below. At least I'm pretty sure. Kris? Andrez?
http://www.anothersky.org/in-print/tobacco-stained-mountain-goat-andrez-...
That book has been about to come out for 20 years now. Fucking tease.
Anyway, I'm very much looking forward to reading Andrez's book.
Heh-heh... but not beige; it's a new hue - "tobacco-stained". A colour that's politically incorrect and bound to be a sales flop in paint stores because it sounds so goddamned awful. Imagine painting your new nursery tobacco-stained brown?
Sorry to hear about your problems getting hold of a copy of the tome, JKabol - I just noticed that it's sold out on US Amazon (I guess that's a good thing?), but it's still available on Amazon UK.
Sounds like you've put in some good investigating, very sleuth-like, and ta for doing so! I dig the roundabout nature of this:
you may have to send me a copy to little rock and then i'll send it to matt in aussie who will in tow send it to richard in chicago who can send it to brandon in the kc and on....
...it sounds like my music promo!

PGoutis01 is spot on, however - you can get it direct from the Another Sky website, which is actually cheaper (for people in America) than Amazon.
And cheers, labelleza!

I'm assuming if Kristopher Young doesn't get back to me, that the 25 copies are already all sent out? So I know whether or not to save my pennies to order it from that other site.
Edit: I come back from an AA meeting and I sound drunk
What I'm trying to say in my incoherent post is if we can get a heads up once the free copies are no longer available so I can save up to buy my own copy.
Not sure, but FYI I did receive mine in the mail a couple days ago. And had a confirmation PM before that.
Not sure, but FYI I did receive mine in the mail a couple days ago. And had a confirmation PM before that.
So that would be a yes. So you just pmmed your address? I just feel uncomfortable pmming my info if there are no copies left. That's why I was asking.
Same.

Heh-heh... nice typo; gave me the opportunity to wax wayward about this tobacco-stained colour code. Ta, mate!
Re: promo copies, I'm sure if you've PM'd Kristopher he'll get straight back to you, but if you don't mind digital version (for iPad or Kindle) you can also PM me your email addy.
Don't worry, I'll do a Mr. Phelps and ensure the message is self-destructed straight after.

a couple notes:
yes, copies are still available.
yes, please pm me your address.
re: amazon -- i passed along the issue and it turns out it was a problem with the distributor. They had a glitch and were basically telling Amazon and others that no copies were left, which is not the case. It's been resolved, and as soon as all the various servers get friendly with one another it'll be as if it never happened.
I just checked Amazon -- it's now reporting '12 to 14 days' but I have a feeling it would ship significantly quicker than that.
Also of note -- I'm all caught up on PMs. If I didn't get back to you, I don't know that I didn't get back to you, so you should hit me up again.

^True that.
Coming back to the cult has been good for me. I pretty much stopped reading for fun when I left for that year or however long it was. I'm like, jonesin' for it now. I know it'll be a while before my copy gets here but I'm still running to check the mail every day.

Had a quick glance but I can't get too stuck in just yet. Need to finish the book for this month's book club first.
Looks good though.

You mention The Big Sleep a lot in that interview, which I find interesting. I love the noir style, but Chandler has been criticized for that novel being all over the place - almost feeling lost in some parts. What do you think?
I think the writing style is very easy, classic Chandler - cocky. But plot wise, it can lose you.
Yeah, I think you have a valid point - it is at times wayward - but for some unknown reason I don't feel lost at all when I read it.
I think it's because I'm so focused on all the other features, like the characters and the repartee between them, and just the general atmosphere that Chandler creates. The direction the story takes is almost a back-seat consideration.

I'll have to give it a reread sometime soon then.
I think my favorite noir story is The Thin Man. The dialogue in that one is just so tight. Funny thing is, I had a friend who said I would love it. She was always getting on my case to read it. And for some reason, I never did. She passed away. I read it when I found out because I figured that I owed it to her. I kept telling her I would read it. Turns out, it's one of my favorite books now. Should have read it when she told me and I could have discussed it with her...
Agree. I liked the Big Sleep and had no trouble with it. Or was that an A B conversation?
