And I thought I'd give Shoplifting from American Apparel by Tao Lin a try.
Of course, they go on the bottom of the queue, so.....
Also have my eBay copy of TCH on its way.

i want to read Tao Lin just so i can hate him with reason.
i just don't think he's books are going to be good. i didn't liek that interview with him. i don't know. maybe i'm just being a prick but something about him rubs me the wrong way. maybe it's his overtly generation y attitude or something.
Fuckin' Aussie hate everyone at first.

Tao Lin annoys me too, though admittedly I haven't read him either. No one has been able to give me a good enough reason why I should pick up a book entitled "Shoplifting From American Apparel"
(and yes, matt - coopers pale! also james squire.)
i just think he reeks of the snotty, self-serving, instant-gratification attitude that makes me loathe myself for being apart of generation y.
i don't know.
i'm suprised his next book isn't called For The LOLZ of it.
careful what you wish for..
...
i didn't wish for it. god. i'd probably have to write him a hate-filled letter (yes, a letter. not an email) if he actaully did something that ridiculous. i mean, he's already got a book called eeee eee eeeeee or some such rubbish.
what is wrong with people.
nothing should be written in a setting of the 21st century. it's boring.
i don't know how much of what i just said i believe. i am purely posting ou of my passionate, uneducated hate for Tao Lin.
is it bad to not like someone before you've even read them. i've read his synopisis'. does that count?
Levi linked this to me just now and i could hardly wait to post it in here. you all deserve to hear this. but make sure you listen to the whole thing. it's amazing.
That video was really cool.
Thanks for posting Matt.
Good find Levi.
personally i found that incredibly pretentious
Wow that was pretty neat.

Nice! Practical Demonkeeping is so good.

I agree.
Yeah, that was...pretty meaningless.
There is hope, but not for us.
Now I'm reading Practical Demonkeeping by Christopher Moore.
Nice! Practical Demonkeeping is so good.
It's pretty good so far, I'm only about 60 pages in because I read slow, though.
You're a brighter little soul than all of the jaded people here. Never take them seriously. NEVER.

That's okay, it's better than just smashing through it. I hope you like it though!

maybe you have to be pretentious to see the pretentiousness of it, you little jaded souls you.
i thought it was neat. clever.

you thought so? I must admit, it was a knife in my heart about not caring what lady gaga was wearing, but I liked the idea of the video, that it could be going one way, and be a really different message with the same words the other way.
glad others like it!

yesterday, at my interview with the guy from the magazine, i got to read a few hapters of Imperial Bedrooms. fucking sweet. every now and then he'd have to take a phone call, or send an email or something because it was the day before production for the new issue started. and he had this weird unsolicited, bound manuscript thing of it. no, cover art, nothing. just white pages bound and photocopied. they have an interview with him in the july issue, and i think they're putting him on the cover. also, the journo that did the interview is getting it published in Rolling Stone aswell. so that's fucking cool for him.
anyway. i enjoyed it, despite Alene saying she despised it. it was a bit odd at first. he is definitely trying to fuck with your head and experiment a bit.
i wanted to ask if i could borrow it, but i didn't want to be rude. so i didn't. but now i'm kicking myself.
We have less than a month Matt!
i know i know! but still. i felt all special having just a printed MS in my hands.
cool story though, right?
I'll have it in like 2 days. IN YO FACE! No, but really, I can't wait.

which mag, matt?
just a local rag. it's called Reverb. i'm probably going to submit the feature to The Newcastle Herald though. see if they're interested. it went really well. He was pretty open, but often rambled, so i had to reign him in every now and then and re-as questions to get the answers i wanted. really looking forward to writing the feature.
I'm still going to wait for the paperback. It's going to be annoying coming on here and seeing that everyone's reading it though.
i reckon they'll bring out a paper back straight away. or pretty soon after the release.
Are you talking about the new BEE still? It probably won't be in paperback for a year.
"There’s no use in denying it: this has been a bad week. I’ve started drinking my own urine." -Patrick Bateman
yeah, we seem to keep coming back to that topic, Brent.
a year you say?
Hey, that's a topic I could discuss all day long. Having read and loved every one of Bret's books, I don't mind when Imperial Bedrooms is the hot topic. But I'm just going off of the usual paperback release habits. I think BEE is big enough of an author that they will greedily hold back the paperback for a year, and push the hardback during that time to make more money. That said, I have ordered internationally released paperbacks from books that were only available hard in the States. So, Matt, you might get lucky.
"There’s no use in denying it: this has been a bad week. I’ve started drinking my own urine." -Patrick Bateman
we'll see. i don't care to buy the hardcover.
I will own the hardcover! BEE is an author that I will buy a hardcover for any day. And sad to say - even if his next 5 books suck ass, I will be the same way.
i just listened to a recording of Chuck reading the new story he's whoring out 'Knock Knock'. and umm, nobody's there.
it was boring. the jokes weren't funny and it just felt like a weak non-fictiony story or something. i don't know.
it really wasn't good.
No doubt. I will buy it hardcover the day it comes out, and it will be the second hardcover I own.

Why do you say that Austin?
I'm reading Clown Girl. I'm a late bloomer.
She's brilliant. Period.

The worst part about being a writer (for me) is trying to study other writer's work. The writers I want to study are so good, that the reader in me gets carried away and next thing I know, it's several pages later and I haven't learned a thing. Hopefully I pick up a skill or two subconsciously.
Also, now that I am becoming aware of more and more techniques, it's getting easier to smile as I notice them in the novels I read.
Notice I said this is the worst part--not a BAD part.

I totally agree with this. Every time I read old Chuck, or I pick up something for it's writing (not the story) - I want to try and learn as much as possible from it. But it ends up being so good, I forget to study!
I've conciously try this with Baer, Didion, Hempel, Carver, Clevenger, etc... I end up learning something. But not half of what I should.
so very true my friend.
Clown Girl was incedible and unique, unlike anything i've ever read. and he language was simple, but it allowed to simplicity and organic nature of the language to shine. i really enjoyed Clown Girl.
I've got a few of her short stories. i can email thm to you, if you want?

That sounds like a lot of fun. One day, I too will be nearby to somewhere Chuck reads. I, too, will listen to his written words via tongue.
Very cool!
