The Book Club Manifesto
Why the "Book Club" section of the forum is exceptional
-People here (including myself) actually pretend to read books besides other than Chuck's. We read a shitload, everyone that contributes to the forum. Chuck is great, but other authors are worth discussing.
-I've met some really smart people in this forum (see: patioman, moe.ron, H.D. Thoreau, and others)
-There isn't as much traffic. This is a good thing and a bad thing. There's more quality here, you dig? But on the other hand, getting someone to respond to your post is tough
-Of course, its my preference. I'm a nerd, so...this is a nerdy forum I guess.
Any thoughts?
Adam
I am hopefully going to make a Book Club at school and it will be called The Cult Book Club: The Pleasanton Chapter
P.S. I was going to originally call it Zaki's Book Club, so I told him, and he came up with the above title.
Adam, did you read my reply about Emerson?

indeed.
with a bit of luck, his life was ruined forever. always thinking that just behind some narrow door in all of his favorite bars, men in red woolen shirts are getting incredible kicks from things he'll never know.
Respect to all those who engage with the CBC (cult book club).
XChuck:
I dig the notion of making a book club centering on Chuck. Read some good books -- thats a start. Its important to engage ideas, and the best way to engage is to enter into a community of learners.
Do Chucks books lead one to want to chage the world (society), or just accept it and withdraw? Or let be, and challenge through subversion? I read once that Chuck particpated in a group that was subversive to pop culture.
Is it possible for Chuck admirers to engage and change? I don't think it happens simply by reading, but by doing. Are there any ideas in Chucks books that one can act upon -- praxis?
Thoreau, I did. And BTW, I hammered my class until they had Emerson leaking out of their pores. They got it, too, which is the truly amazing part. Its tough shit, but I read it to them for THREE straight days. I thought they were going to kill me.
THIS (the CBC) is a community of learners. I think that what WE DO is grow. I really appreciate the fact that I can talk about this stuff with others of a similar interest: Chuck's books, books, and ideas.

It's not going to center on Chuck. I wasn't even planning on reading any Chuck books anytime soon.
True, but we all have that in common, so maybe I just assumed. But, in reality, are you going to read and Jan Karon, or Ursula Hegi, maybe some Anita Diamant?
Amy Tan?
Nicholas Sparks?
JK
I don't have any idea who any of those people are...
All I know is that eventually we WILL read House of Leaves.
dont forget the dice man xchuck
I was thinking about that as I was writing my above post.
I promise guys, it will get bigger, it's just that Zaki is moving from Cincinnati to Columbus OHIO 6 days from today so he's overloaded with a bunch of shit to worry about (School transfer, work transfer)
Come the mid-week of SEPT 15TH I will be back with a vengeance...
and I got something new for october (besides a book for us to read)...
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS! (tyler style, not schoolwork style)
That's all I will say for now...
Word em up XChuck, Zaki
wow adam, and here i thought you hated me because of that whole student teaching thing in the general discussion forum...
anyway, to be a true manifesto, there's got to be some sort of call to action. i propose we continue discussing books intelligently, and that these books are well-written and thought-provoking.
WHO'S WITH ME??
p.s. zaki, good luck with your move

Susan says so!
Word to the Proleteriat...
Give me a book and I'll read the fuck out of it.
BTW -- I said you were smart, moe, I didn't mention your soot-black heart. jk!
It's true though. She does have a soot-black heart.
please don't feel threatened by my emasculative and superior intelligence, boys. to be accurate, my heart is more grinch-like: three sizes too small.
what's the deal with the book club becoming a working class movement?? "word to the literati" should be our battle cry; fuck working, and fuck susan, whoever she may be.
We are the intellectual vanguard.
Women can be in the vanguard, moe.
The Whos are singing down in Whoville, moe, and they don't have their be boddle bops, or who tugglers or trots. Can you feel your heart expanding?
that is the coolest fucking line ive read on here all week

And no one wonders where patioman is? Is that just the way it is? Will things never be the same? (Ohh yeah-e-e-yeahh)
for the record, i'll always wonder where my pattycakes is. unless he starts quoting bruce hornsby & the range lyrics.
No, no, no. I would have been quoting the Range if I had said "That's just the way it is. Things will never change."
Instead, I twisted "That's just the way it is. Things will never be the same," which is a TUPAC SHAKUR quote. An enormous difference, there. Whether or not 2Pac was alluding to or covering Bruce Hornsby I cannot say.
