Short Story Collections
Hey all, I am looking for some recommendations of some good collections of short stories by a single author. I have to do a project on a short story author for short story writing class I am taking, and I would like to find some new authors I may not be familiar with similar to the likes of some other culties.
Thanks.
If you want to have a laugh, then pick up "notes of a dirty old man" by Charles Bukowski. It's probably not something you would like to do a project on though...
"Someone must have slandered Josef K., for one morning, without having done anything truly wrong, he was arrested."
"Jemand musste Josef K. verleumdet haben, denn ohne dass er etwas Böses getan hätte, wurde er eines Morgens verhaftet"
Knockemstiff by Donald Ray Pollock
Naked Pueblo by Mark Poirier
Pastoralia by George Saunders
How about Salinger's 9 Stories?
My all time favorite short story book is Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson. I can't believe nobody mentioned it yet.
Also worth mention are Amy Hempel and Thom Jones. I love their work and reread it often.

honestly, for a class, particularly a writing class, if i were to choose a short story author it would probably be the classical raymond carver because his writing is pretty close to perfect.
another incredible choice, if youre looking for stronger humor along the sides of the raunchy-crooked, i fucking loved mark richard's (rish-aard, pronounced in the french way) charity. his other short story collection, ice at the bottom of the world, is probably acclaimed with higher merit, but i promise you'll not forget the story fun at the beach.. haha
good luck, brother

“...There are so many ways of being despicable it quite makes one's head spin. But the way to be really despicable is to be contemptuous of other people's pain. You ought to have some apprehension that the man you see before you was once even younger than you are now and arrived at his present wretchedness by imperceptible degrees.”
-James Baldwin
I can't believe that I forgot this one...
Great recommendation.

Has anyone ever read any of either Michael Chabon's short story collections (A Model World and Other Stories; Werewolves in Their Youth) or Jonathan Lethem's (The Wall of the Sky, The Wall of the Eye; Men and Cartoons)? I've been thinking about checking them out for a more modern approach to my project.
Just curious.
I've read Men and Cartoons. I really liked it, not life-changing or anything like that, just solidly written, entertaining stories.
