September - Tell me what you've been reading
Hey, I just finished that one last week or so! I found Megan Abbott by searching for more authors like Gillian Flynn (I looooooove her!).
Dare Me is like Meangirls with extra MEAN. I really liked it, too.
I'm going to make a note of Gillian Flynn, I burned through Dare Me and downloaded another of her books because it was only 99p on Kindle.
I'm reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy now. It's recommended reading for uni this year. It's very miserable, hah.
A million heavens by John Brandon.
Hey Derek, how was BTK?
The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett.
Finally got around to starting George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series with A Game of Thrones. It's pretty hard to put down even if I do know what's going to happen.
Word of advice: don't get attached to characters. As you well know, they kinda tend to die.
Pro Bono by Seicho Matsumoto.
Usually horribly.
Also, I'm convinced that, after the first book, George R.R. had interns write the rest using his outlines. They are increasingly poor.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Well they better fucking hurry, I want to see Dany rule the world.
Usually horribly.

Yeah I feel like the writing is very poor sometimes. I love the story but I've not picked up the fourth book yet because I'm put off by the writing. There's often a lit of faff too, where it isn't interesting to me at all! It's a shame because the story is so good.
Just curious, what's the list price on that book? haha I have a feeling the author and publisher didn't work for free. Would make for an interesting promo, though.
€15

Yeah, I noticed that the first three books are ranked very highly on Amazon while the fourth and fifth aren't. Although most of the complaints are a bit silly and aren't about the quality of the writing.
Out of Africa by Karen Blixen.
Junot Díaz- This is how you lose her.
Hi, I'm new here. Currently reading my second Palahniuk book, Haunted.
Is that the one where the lady keeps a diary or the one where the guy chokes on food?
This is why we can't have nice things.
Anybody here read If On a Winter's Night a Traveler?
I'm about a 3rd of the way in and it's just annoying me. I really want to finish it because Clevenger recommended it and a lot of people I know have given it good reviews, but it's just repetitive and boring to me so far. It sucks because I haven't invested this much in a book and given up in a long time.
Oh man. And it's on the 1001 books to read list so that means I will read it at some point. Haven't read any of his other books, either.
I just read some parts of that again. You look like Miggity's brother.

Didn't like it. Check out The Way Through Doors. A little similar, but a lot better.
Yuknavitch's Dora: A Headcase, very popular around here. Being a novel, I'm surprised how casual the voice is, almost blog-gy. I was even more surprised at this when reading her memoir before, assuming this one would be more formal, but it reads like a teenage version of that same voice. That sounds like an indictment, but it actually makes it infinitely readable and a page-turner. She really nails the sarcasm and slang. There's a healthy amount of Palahniuk influence here, and his foreword is very entertaining as well.
The Eye Collector by Sebastian Fitzek.

The Way Through Doors sounds excellent. Added it to my wishlist. Thanks!
Murder Inc., the Story of the Syndicate (Burton B. Turkus & Sid Feder)

Another Man's War by Sam Childers. Halfway through and it's awesome.
I don't know WHY I've been putting it off, but The Spy Who Came in from the Cold by John le Carré.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
Good one.

bukowski - post office
.I'm beginning to believe that anything I do to extend my life is just going to be outweighed by the agony of living it.
I love Bukowski - I was just contemplating reading Hollywood. It's between that and Cosmopolis I think.
Post Office was my first Bukowski. You'll like it.
Women was my first. And my favorite. But I think he's like that - your first is your favorite because they're all so similar.
I decided to go with Cosmopolis by Don Delillo.
You`re right. Started yesterday and almost halfway through.
I`m really into it. Guess I`m gonna hit the
bookstore tomorrow and buy women or factotum. can`t decide now.
recommendations? Or maybe I`ll get both.

hollywood is also on my list.

Ham on Rye or Women.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Factotum is a good one, too.
Women!
I wouldn't go from Post Office to Factotum though.
There are two kinds of Bukowski Books;
- My Horrible Experiences With The Ladies
- My Horrible Experiences With Shitty Jobs
This excepts Ham On Rye which is My Horrible Experiences With My Dad and Hollywood and Pulp which are My Horrible Books I Wrote When I Was Dying.
One should try to go back and forth between the two main types.

I'm ignoring all the poetry books. Which are simply Horrible.

What about his books of shorts? Have you read any of those Tuff?

This is the most accurate description of his life work you will find. Tuffy is wise.
I cried at the end of The Road! Good stuff.
I can't see me reading anything but stuff off of reading list for now. So I will be reading Dracula by Bram Stoker and Time's Arrow by Martin Amis next.
I've been meaning to read both Time's Arrow and The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis for years... both are sitting on my shelf, patiently waiting for me.
I'll let you know how Time's Arrow is. I've never read Martin Amis before, I've had London Fields and Yellow Dog on my shelf for years.
I have read, in my youth, everything by him. His short collections tend to be a mixed bag of Good, Really Good, and Meh.

I read Dracula. It's really good. The writing style's pretty cool.
I loved the film adaptation of The Rachel Papers with Dexter Fletcher.

I'm starting Bukowski now thanks to you guys.
Taking a short break with the first Lemony Snicket book.
All that previous rigamarole about Isabel not liking reading? She just finished this in two days. I'm ecstatic.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I love Bukowski's poetry. His prose stuff is pretty okay but the poetry is better.

Pinball, 1973 by Haruki Murakami.
