Will Self

Will Self
"Is an English novelist, reviewer and columnist. He is known for his satirical, grotesque and fantastical novels and short stories."
Books of fiction:
# Cock and Bull (1992)
# My Idea of Fun (1993)
# Great Apes (1997)
# How the Dead Live (2000)
# Dorian, an Imitation (2002)
# The Book of Dave (2006)

What do you guys think about this acclaimed british writer?
Who dont read about yet?
He is placed in the same definition of literature that Chuck.
Lets talk about any book of him.

My personal opinion, I realy like this guy! A beautiful writing, with great subjects.
The last book that I read of him was "The Book of Dave", that tell a history about a taxi driver that write a diary and bury, and after a apocalyptic event wich the world was destroyd the new "humans" that reborn, find the diary and begin to live according to the diary of Dave, bulding a society by that "rules", like a bible of the great Dave.
Is a great book, that I recomend!

Well lets talk about...

I haven't read anything by him but I've heard great things. I have a copy of The Butt in my apartment. And The Book of Dave too, I think.

I've read Cock and Bull, Great Apes and Tough, Tough Toys for Tough, Tough Boys - as well as a lot of the articles he writes for the Guardian etc.

Really like him. Brilliant high-concept ideas that might be quite slight in another writer's hands are savage, funny and perceptive in Self's.

He's also known in the UK for his appearances on the daft but brilliant quiz show, Shooting Stars:

Vinicius - do you read him in the original English, or in Portuguese?

Oh - just saw this. Interesting, because he's also know in the UK for his love of obscure words and convoluted language. Just wondered how it works in translation...

I'm read in portuguese, 'cause Im not so good in english to read his books, I just read also some articls on the web. He write in the hard way you know, even in portuguese you realy have to focus sometimes to understand what exaclty he want to say.
In the edition of Cock and Bull that was publish in here, in portuguese, there a interview of will self with the translation guy of brazil, and they talk about that, about the translation of the titles of the books and also the book for all. He realy seems to like this stuffs with words and language.
Maybe if a find time, I translate the interview em post here for you. The translation guy of brazil say that is very hard sometimes to bring into the portuguese the realy meaning of the words and paragraphs that was write in english. But in my opinion the translation in portuguese for what I read is very nice, you realy can feel what Will Self want to say, the sex parts and the horror bloody parts, is very similar and nice.

so, wicht book do you like most?

Will Self wrote the introduction to my copy of 1982, Janine.

A landmark work for newly emerging Scots literature, and in my view one of the finest post-war novels in English. It is definitely one of the books I would choose to take to my desert island - and I already have. The name of the island is Britain.

I've read The Butt and My Idea Of Fun. Also quite a lot of his non-fiction, but can't remember which books. I like very much, and he's awesome on Shooting Stars.

FUN FACT: In the UK editions at least, lots of the books have blurred photographs of little figurines. Those pictures were taken at a model village IN MY HOMETOWN! HE EVEN WROTE A STORY SET THERE.

Yeah, let's wet ourselves about it.
