i have been around for awhile on this site and i enjoy reading many of this sites opinions on books. i dont post very often but i know i should. i have found many new authors through this site and i have just recently gone on a book-buying spree if you will. i have a small stack of books that i wish to read but am unable to decide how to tackle such a stack. so i am requesting the opinions of people whom i think enjoy the same books that i do, in what book to read first.

The list is as follows (and in no particular order other than they happen to be stacked like this on my shelf):

Geek Love - Katherine Dunn
Jennifer Government - Max Barry
A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints - Dito Montiel
Vernon God Little - DBC Pierre
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius - Dave Eggers
The Contortionist's Handbook - Craig Clevenger

any and all opinions are welcome

Philip K Dick is an excellent suggestion, why not Voices From the Street? The latest Philip Dick book released, it's one of his fiction works, not science fiction.

The best suggestion I can think of is The Raw Shark Texts (www.rawsharktexts.com) by Steven Hall.
It's set to come out March 28, and I got an advanced copy and absolutely love it! He name drops Fight Club near the middle of the book too Smile It's a wonderfully original story, almost everyone in the Barnes and Noble I work in is lining up to read it, and it's getting nothing but good reviews.
The website is really neat too, that's why I put the link up. Even if it doesn't make it to the book club, check it out, it's worth it.

Read them in alphabetical order.

I like how the people who've posted here have pretty much ignored the question you asked in the opening post.

For reals, how bout y'all take your heads out of your asses and read what the hell a thread is about before shooting off your posts.

As for the knypheman, if you're interested in a chance to post more, you could jump on Geek Love (which would actually be my first recommendation anyway) and get in on the book club discussion that's started. Apart from that, I gotta be honest, I haven't read any of 'em. A few are sitting on my shelf as well, I just haven't gotten around to 'em just yet. The next one I personally would read would be the Eggers or the Clevenger. Probably Pierre after that.

Definately Geek Love because then you can't post in the discussion about this book. Wink

Contortionist Handbook is a quick and enjoyable read.
The same can go for Jennifer Government. (But mostly in a comical way.)

I've read both of those and enjoyed them. I'd go with Contortionist Handbook first though.

But honestly. Which one do you really feel like reading first through all of them. I don't think you need another person telling you which book to read first. Flip through the site for the author's name in the book club section i'm pretty sure there are threads on some of those authors about their works that could shine a light on which you would be interested in reading.

read Geek Love and join the book discussion (it's lonely in there.)
i'm about 2/3s of the way through and am loving it.

the Contortionist's Handbook is truly a good read, so that would be 2nd on my list. and dave eggers would be right up there too. i haven't read AHWOSG, but his You Shall Know Our Velocity! is one that i recommend to everyone i know.

I'm in the middle of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius right now. It is excellent and I absolutely love it. So I'd go with that if I chose something from your list.

I'd also recommend adding Irvine Welsh to your list. Start with Trainspotting if you ever do read Welsh - not because of quality, but because his novels have a shared universe and Trainspotting will make all his other stuff easier and more enjoyable for you.

Ooh, excellent...well if you enjoyed Trainspotting, you have to read Porno. It's the sequel and just as good, if not better.
