Reccomended Reading Thread
What do you reccomend?
BTW, would you reccomend American Psycho by B.E.E.? It's one I've been interested in, and I liked the film, but don't know if it's worth it.
FUBU and KFC have anounced their move to combine forces and fullyn focus on targeting more 'ethnic' audiences. In other news, McDonalds, Starbucks and Wal-Mart have combined to become The United Corporate of America. Moving on...

Like they said, check that out, very reliable recs.
I just had to say that yes, I would absolutely recommend AP. Anything by BEE.
"There’s no use in denying it: this has been a bad week. I’ve started drinking my own urine." -Patrick Bateman
Read 1984 by George Orwell if you haven't already. Or be like me and read it for the second time.
Man is the cruelest animal.
Good call, I love that book.
anything by Carlton Mellick III. And just read a lot of the classic books. You know the ones I am talking about. Pretty much any book you ever had to read for school, but didn't, and all the other ones they put in that section. They tend to be decent. Mythology is fly. And the tab has stuff.
Good arms vs bad arms will win hands down.
Ugh, bizarro authors. I gave up after trying to get through those Bizarro Starter Kits.
I've only read The Haunted Vagina, and it didn't bore me. And they seem to be really short books. I just seem to like Carlton Mellick because the story line sounds hilarious. But I don't really have an opinion on them yet. Have to try something new, and I was not ready to read a western yet. But I am sure those probably are good books.

Jonathan Franzen is such a good writer my iPhone automatically finishes spelling his last name, complete with a capital letter lol...
Anyone ever read him? He just released a novel called Freedom. I picked up his older novel, The Corrections, after discovering him in Time magazine. He was on the fuckin cover lol
The corrections is damn good so far, I'm roughly halfway through it. Hyper realistic shit. Thoughts--- ?
A book that I have recently been recommending to anyone who will listen is:
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. I love this book. It is an amazing sci fi book by an author that didn't publish very prolifically at all. It was made into a movie called Charlie, but I haven't seen it so I don't know whether it is any good. I don't want to spoil any of it for anyone who hasn't read it but in a nutshell it is about intelligence, and what might happen if we could raise a person's intelligence. It is a very memorable story.

sounds like the Lawnmower Man.
Flowers for Algernon is a science fiction short story and subsequent novel written by Daniel Keyes. The short story, written in 1958 and first published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1960. The novel was published in 1966 and was joint winner of that year's Nebula Award for Best Novel. - Wikipedia
Cliff Robertson, the star of the 1968 film version, Charly, took home the Oscar for best actor.
IMHO, the book, like Catcher in the Rye, is best appreciated by being read as late grade-school to Jr. High age, where it is much more likely to be mind-blowing and life-changing.
Worth reading no matter what age, however.
Tuffy the Dump Truck may rarely increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The risk may be greater if you have heart disease or increased risk for heart disease (for example, due to smoking, family history of heart disease, or conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes), or with longer use. Tuffy should not be taken right before or after heart bypass surgery. Also, Tuffy may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. This effect can occur without warning symptoms at any time while taking Tuffy. Older adults may be at higher risk for this effect. (See also Precautions and Drug Interactions sections.) Stop taking Tuffy and get medical help right away if you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody or black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech. Ask your doctor if Tuffy is right for you.

That book did blow my mind, I believe it was middle school when we read it.
It's actually one I keep thinking I should pick up again.

I read it in sixth grade. It messed with me. Hard.
I should read it again to see what my adult self thinks.

Which is always fun.
I was totally into that Labyrinth movie as a kid, the one with David Bowie.
I watched it again in college... it was ... just difficult for me.

Muppets do not belong in seriouse dramas.
I'm looking at you, Gelflings.
Also, and I know that I stand alone here, fuck Yoda.

You're not alone. I don't like Star Wars. Or Trek.
...
Blasphemer.

ugh.
I'm glad to see that there are folks on here agree about Flowers for Algernon. Its the sort of book that will slip under the radar unless someone persuades/forces you to have a go.
Now that I have tested the water, a another recommendation for anyone else who might like to dabble in the genre of sci fi. (If you are at all into sci fi then chances are you will have already read these, but it is a neglected genre IMO, at least it is amongst younger readers.)
The City and the Stars, by Arthur C Clarke. Forget Space Odessy, forget Rama. Here is Clarke's greatest work. The scope of this novel is incredible (it is set about a billion years in the future.) There are so many ideas crammed into this book and an amazing ending in which Clarke really pulls the carpet out from under you.

Is it no longer required reading for every 6th grader in the country? In my experience they don't often change those lists.
"I'm glad I live in the GPS era. In a different century, I would've set off to visit the other side of the village and wandered off into the mountains and been eaten by a carnivorous plant. Or discovered the Americas."
-LaJessica
I've never read it.

Hmm maybe in the US.
Here it is not a well known book. Unfortunately, in my experience, teenage scoolkids in the UK don't get encouraged to read anywhere near as much as they should. Luckily I have a mother who used to push me to read interesting things instead.
Our school library was so crap that I used to order books in from the regular county library and take them to school with me.
I can't speak for every school in the country, but my English teachers have almost all been shit with regards to reading. Every author that I like to read has been either recommended to me by somebody outside of my education, or I have tracked down myself.
I am a bit jealous if you guys read stuff like Daniel Keyes in school.

Well, that's most of state education for you.
But I don't think it's just the teacher's job to make kids read. Encouragement should definitely come from them as well, but really it's up to the parents. Most of the kids I knew that didn't enjoy reading came from book-less houses. My boyfriend's family spring to mind here. I doubt his mother has ever read a book.
I was lucky- and educated at a progressive Independent school where it was seen as cool to read and do well.

I don't know if I'd call Star Wars a "serious drama."
The Dark Crystal gets a pass from you though?
