One Second After

*SPOILERS* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Second_After *END SPOILERS*
*The following may contain mild spoilers, but really, nothing can prepare you.*
If you don't know what an asymmetrical attack is, you should read this book. If you do, then you should definitely read this book.
Imagine a massive EMP goes off and kills the entire grid, the entire first world goes back 500 years. No electricity, no medical supplies, no nothing. Most cars don't even start. Anything with a chip of any kind is toast. And if you don't have a gun, you're on thin ice already.
The scary thing is, it could happen tomorrow. The even scarier thing is, you wouldn't know it for a couple days, and it would be way beyond too late by then.
This is mainly written from the point of view of a family going through it, what they don't know and what they can figure out. It puts you in the driver's seat, first hand, and without the media there is no dissemination of knowledge, so like most people, you have to find out what is going on piece meal.
It's written by a guy who has studied this sort of stuff for the government, but don't let his credentials scare you off, it's pretty good writing. The first chapter starts off a little shaky, but he quickly finds his story-telling stride.
Newt Gingrich writes a foreword in this book, and it affected him so much he insisted congress read it. This is a possibility we've known about for years, and we could have been preparing for as well. But we haven't.
Julia's reading this right now, she's halfway through, and she's balling. The book will shake you to your core.
I mean, really, don't go into it thinking "oh this'll be fun." Go into it thinking, "Okay, I just have to promise not to go overboard doing disaster preparedness when I'm done."

Si vis pacem, para bellum
But nobody tell Giggan.
Or this will inspire at least a dozen more threads!
Kidding, he'd probably love it if he hasn't already read it.

Sounds interesting. I saw a programme on Discovery about how the world will end (numerous tech-related scenarios, like nano-machines and nukes.) An EMP was among the world ending alternatives.

Aaaaaand bought.
Si vis pacem, para bellum

Yeah this really does sound gripping: POW - wishlisted.

This sounds fascinating. I'm buying it.
