1920 Knut Hamsun
1957 Albert Camus
1962 John Steinbeck (but only Of Mice and Men)
1964 Jean-Paul Sartre
1968 Yasunari Kawabata
1994 Kenzaburo Oe

Haha, that makes me feel bad. Knut Hamson wrote Hunger, a great book about being a writer, he was like a predecessor to people like Fante and Bukowski. The only thing I've read by Kawabata is a collection of short stories, they were quite terse and beautiful. Oe writes modern existentialism which I think went over my head a bit. My favourite of those are Camus and Sartre, in particularly Sartre's Roads To Freedom trilogy.

Other's on the list that I really want to read- Gabriel Garcia Marquez (One Hundred Years of Solitude) and José Saramago (Blindness).

Knut Hamsun - Hunger/Sult

Pretty sure that's the only one.

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway
As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
and Of Mice and Men, Grapes of Wrath, Cannery Row and East of Eden by, one of my favourite authors, John Steinbeck.

Rudyard Kipling, Knut Hamsun, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Albert Camus, John Steinbeck
I'd recommend all of them, but I'd recommend Knut Hamsun above all others.

I'm reading Gunter Grass' "The Tin Drum" which is damn good, but then I would say that, being such a fan of mute dwarfs.

Knut Hamsun's Mysteries has a dwarf. A midget really. Only he's more of a hunchback than a midget, I'd say. And also he's not mute. Still...good book.

1946 Hermann Hesse
1954 Ernest Hemingway
1957 Albert Camus
1962 John Steinbeck
1964 Jean-Paul Sartre
1983 William Golding

I also have multiple books by Pearl S. Buck and William Faulkner but I haven't read any of them yet Sad

I've also read stuff by Churchill and Eliot but those would be speeches/poems.

Oh for fuck sake, the 2009 Nobel Prize for Chemistry has been given to a group of people "for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome". Why don't they just change the name to the Nobel Prize for Biology and get it over with.

He won the nobel peace prize. Not that he has created any peace since he became president though. But I guess everyone looks good in comparison with George W Bush...

Incidentally, because people deeply care about what I'm reading, Le Clézio is damn good. I'm reading the short stories in "Fever".

Well Jack, did you read him because of his reputation, and because you strive for the new and tantalising in world literature?

NO! I'd never heard of him before his Nobel win. This is how I achieve sophistication. I paid £8.99 for my culture.

Haha, at least you bought the book new! I'm getting my Swedish Academy-approved literature secondhand on amazon. And even then I'm not willing to spend the time researching the authors that I've never heard of, I'm waiting for people in this thread to make recommendations. I'm such a cretin.
