NaNoWriMo: How goes it?
Let's keep on top of this, the month is about half over already!!!
How many words do you have?
Is your story dying out?
Let's keep each other motivated and on track.
First order of business.... since this is my first nanowrimo... what happens when you're, say only 17,000 words into your story and the end is coming up fast? How do you push it to 50,000 without just bullshitting it?

the long short of it is, i am rediculously low on my word count. hoping to get a bulk of it done by this weekend because sunday im outta town again for the day. so thursday fri and sat mornings, ill have to hit those keys harder than ive ever done so before, even counting the intensives

I'm terrible at this, I'm yet to start. But it doesn't really matter, I have enough stories/essays I need to write for school, so in reality I will have written about 50,000 words by the end of November probably.
I'm in the same situation. I have yet to start as well, but I have written a LOT for school.

Hmm, well at least I'm not the only one who finds 50k words in a month hard ...

I also am very behind...
My story is not dying, I just haven't taken the time to write.
As for the story turning into crap, I find that I have the most to say when that happens. I've written 5,000 words in a sitting about something completely unrelated to the story. The fun comes in the next 5,000 words trying to get it to come together, and sometimes not, just letting it be. Sometimes bullshitting it gives me the best ideas.
Oh, and ireLocus, I'm with you. I'll be drinking whiskey, and yelling at interlopers in a stupor, while trying to crank out the rest of the first half of my novel.
...There is no folly of the beast of the earth which is not infinitely outdone by the madness of men.
Whiskey? Well then I'll pick up a fifth and join you in that!
I'll also be polishing the rest of a bottle of Kettle One, a 2 year Tequila (awesome stuff), a bottle of brandy, and then hitting the brews.
I just hate having all the almost empty bottles of booze lying around, and this is as good a reason as any to down them and start fresh.

I've been playing along at home. I knew there was no way I'd get the 50,000 words, but I have managed to write the first 15 pages of my novel since November 1st! Which is 15 pgs more than I've written in the past. So National Novel Writing Month has already been a success for me. I like the spirit of the whole thing. It's basically, "Shut the fuck up and write!" Awesome.
Wife's gone.
Got the place to myself.
Got a bottle of Kettle One.
Got my favorite hat on. (I'll leave the rest to your imagination).
Let the writing begin.

so.. what happened ?
got a bottle of blended whiskey (ick, i prefer bourbon or tenn whiskey, but it was a gift from a friend--she bought it for a party and didnt use it and will never drink it so i took it home.) I drank what i drank out of it in approx one hour, maybe an hour and a half. somewhere along the line i thought it would be a good idea to go to bed, or i must have because that is where i found myself this morning. i didnt write anything last night and if i did i cant find it.
have gotten another 1200 words this morning, though. hoping for 1500 more so ill have 10k by the afternoon. im trying, but being a bit hung over isnt helping. im about to nip a little hair of the dog, so they say, and see if that helps a little bit

Well, I did get 2500 words out. My goal was 5,000 for the night, but it's good nonetheless.
There was a lot less Vodka left than I thought. The Tequila was gone, empty, but still taking up space atop the fridge. The Brandy tasted awful after the Vodka.. and I only remembered about my intentions to buy a 5th of whiskey after I hit the sheets.
So I was somewhat productive.
Tonight's a new night.

try a sipping whiskey, because otherwise you're going to get too hammered to write/type - i've found if you can section it off into 500-700 word chunks (scenes, chapters, sub-chapters) you can break it up, then stretch your legs, whatever and then get back at it
but whatever works - hang in there guys

hemingway, that man's man. on a productive day, the man would write one novel page a day. right at three hundred words
course the man could bust out four short stories in a weekend and all of them badass
and i dont so much like sipping whiskey. tried george dickle the other week, sipping on it. but im a shot man and my woman is a shot woman. we dont generally stray too far from that. some nights, however, i just get too sloppy to even try writing. tonight wont be one of those nights, but i wont get home until late--my woman's family is in town and i dont know what were doin but i know were doin it elsewhere
sometimes thats all a man needs to know
so. back late, working through morning for that fifteen-k mark
good luck, yaw

Well, this is how I write, in small scenes. It works well for me. I haven't bothered with working out which sections form chapters yet. I'm taking some of the advice from the NaNo staff people, 'Just write the good scenes, jump around, then connect it all later.' It's very liberating.
As for the booze, I'm not so much a straight up shot person. I start with a couple shots, to set the mood, then move on to mixed drinks and top it off with beers later. But I didn't have enough limes last night, either, so instead of having a Caipirinha or a Moscow Mule, I was just adding vodka to ginger ale with a touch of bitters.

I'm moving at a snail's pace, college work is really kicking my ass. I'm losing all enthusiasm for my story, I'm stuck I guess. I confess. I don't have time to write really with homework and all. This is an idiotic month for it. It should be during the summer when people have time to write and bathe in the sun. Or write and hide from the sun with a cold beer and twenty deck.

i found the first five pages by noah lukeman to be far more helpful of the simple reason that he's read ten thousand manuscripts, so his imput on how to guage manuscripts is a rare one.
strunk and white is a must for the writer. i read it fairly often, but it does nothing for the prospect of writing a novel, only rather showing one how to craft sentences and paragraphs well

I like the spring, when it's rain and the prospect of summer is lovely. Summer itself is never lovely, it's warm and full of insects than can fly and suck your blood, children being loud, old men wearing sandals, and the world is drowning with so much sweat and ice-cream across their mouths. I'm still on something like 200 words. In my defense I had a 3000-5000 word story due for Fiction Workshop that counts for half of my grade, so I spent the last two weeks whipping that into publishable condition.
I can do 10000 words a day (on the weekend) if I'm just writing without worrying about editing, so I should still get it done.
i hit 30,000 last night and i don't care if it's 30,000 words of crap... i am insanely happy about it. i was sure i would have given up 29,999 words ago.

I never know how this is. Cause the only shit i write is screenplays, and i cant just toss myself into it. I start doing it all in just one sentence. The whole story outline. Then i make it in one paragraph, then a whole page, and so on until i feel i got a good structure in which to write on, and just then i really start writing the first draft of the thing... how does this work in novels?
I know the way i do this seems contrived and formulaic, but its because i feel even the finished script is just an outline, a blueprint of a project that still has to go through a lot of creative input before its finished, so i dont feel im strangling the soul out of it or anything.

Yeah, blah! I'm gonna give NaNoWriMo a rest and just concentrate on a couple of other things. I've got a hard-on for being pubslished and paid for doing so in a print magazine before I turn eighteen, so I'm working on a short story at the moment to the best of my ability. The novel I'll turn back to when I need a break from the story. In essence, expect a lot of the same story being worked and reworked come the future from me.
I've learned a valuable couple of lessons though. The key to writing is shutting the fuck up and writing. Novels are hard. And lastly, but not leastly, November is a shit month for writing.

ah hahahahahaaaa! thanks!
i just checked on your word count... you are getting up there too!
i really hate that the nanowrimo site only shows me 11 of my writing buddies in no particular order. can't it order them by word count at least? 'cause you don't show up on my buddy page, but you are kicking the shit out of most of them word-wise. maybe i'll just go delete someone who sucks because seeing my buddies on there with huge word counts makes me happy and want to keep going. see big fat zeros makes me sad.
Huh... weird. I don't really get the site, either. Meh. I have maybe 6 or 7 buddies I think, but I don't even bother with much else on the site anyway. I just come here for updates over and above word count.
Now, I gotta get back to writing!

Okay, so what happens if a major plot development (in my head) totally changes a couple previous key events?
Do I take the time to find them and delete them, or re-write them to make the fit the new development?
Or do I just write on? Cause in a way, that would overly inflate my word count, wouldn't it? If I have two versions of the same scene(s)?
At the same time, I don't want to get hung up on editing, especially being this far behind in the overall word count.
Thoughts?

don't touch those earlier scenes! the only time you should rework them (this month) is if you hit 50,000 and it's not the end of the month (according to No Plot, No Problem). it doesn't over inflate your word count... you did write them, didn't you! remember, quantity surpasses all this month, even continuity.
just keep going, write the scenes again if you like (leaving the old ones in place), leave yourself big bold screaming letters about what you want to fix later, anything you want. just don't delete anything.
k?
. .
im in absolute agreement with mercury..
keep going. for all you know, later on, maybe at the end, some things will need changing and some wont. the story will continue to develope, only if you continue to write it. dont kill yourself with rewrites. just build the story, maintain what you want, write what you want to rewrite later

That's why I write everything longhand first. It makes it impossible to just delete the text. It also makes it very difficult to know your word count.
Okay, big news:
Between the Tuesday and Wednesday I got (right around) 10,000 words down on my nanorimo story. But let me back up a little.
Last year, sometime in May or June, I did a speedwriting challenge out of both boredom and a desire to hone my lyric writing skills. I wanted to unlock my creativity. What I never intended to do is keep adding to that story until it grew enourmously huge and took over my life. I had 80.000+ meandering words revolving around this plot, but with no real direction, the story sucked and there was no good plot line, nothing worth readng.
Then I joined Write Club, and started all over.
Those of you who were a part of Write Club this year know that I wussed out because of some whiny medical excuse, and my book never really took shape.
Now lets fast forward to Tuesday afternoon. I'm home sick from work and inspired to write my NaNo story. Good news, right? Got a few thousand words down.
Even better news is, I actually went to bed and then got up twice Wednesday night into Thursday morning in order to not only get 10.000+ words for NaNo, BUT.... I realized how my last book should end, wrote THAT, and I can now call it finished.
You heard me right, Subliminal Messiah is done, and I will be editing it soon. This book, for NaNo, works perfectly as a tangent sequel, and now that I've realized how the stories and characters connect, not only can I finish the NaNo story with clear direction, but it all begs for a third story to fill in the two week gap between the two books.
So last summer I sit down to get creative and write some lyrics, and now I'm working on an accidental trilogy.
Take that, cancer!
