Movember 2010 and I am reading...
I did sell my soul for awesome guitar-playing skills. I only regret it a little.
There is hope, but not for us.
Play us something !

The Accidental by Ali Smith. Not too sure about it so far.
Tess D'Urberville by Thomas Hardy.
Oof. Let me know what you think of this. Have you read anything else by Hardy?
There is hope, but not for us.
Yesterday I read Extinction Journals by Jeremy Robert Johnson. Thinking about reading John Dies At The End by David Wong next.
If you read John Dies at the End let me know what you think? I have it on my Must Read shelf for ages.

Only The Mayor of Casterbridge. I'm 100-something pages into it and I pretty much like it so far.

Will do.
Reason I'm thinking about reading it is because it's one of my boyfriend's favorite books.

I want to read it but I reckon its a bit Sci Fiy thingy blah.
Pop. 1280 by Jim Thompson.
Trying to work my way out of my reading slump. I think it's because I'm writing a lot more at the moment. My own words take precedence, or something like that.
Just started The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster yesterday
Oh I loved that!
Dreams from Bunker Hill by John Fante
Autumn by David Moody. I've read 2 books by this guy before. One was good, one was crap so dude this is the rubber match.
listening to audio books doesn't count as reading.
so what's preventing you from reading fiction now?
Indignation by Philip Roth.
I can understand this, I have trouble reading fiction because there is just so much to learn - fiction is just a distraction.
However, I can usually fly through a fiction book over a non-fiction.
Think for yourself. Question Authority.
The other problem reading fiction is the small shared frame of reference. After you talk about the two or three books you've both read it's all like "Oh yes, I've wanted to read that," or "I put that down halfway through," or "Oh yes, I've been hearing such great things about that," and "you know, I'm going to put that one on my list."
So you don't want to read fiction because someone else you know might not have read the same books?
I'm still trudging through The House of Mirth. Its slow going. I'm considering starting the Dark Tower series when I finally finish this one.

Did I mention I was reading Pop. 1280?
Anyway, Almost done with that spine tingling little thing. Fuck. Nick Corey is a creep. I love the contrast of his actions, the contradictions, It makes him so unpredictable, so volatile, and scary, just fucking down-right god-danged plumb out of his mind.
When I finish that in about 10 pages time I'll probably hit up The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler.
I read V for Vendetta. Amazing! I can't believe how good it was. Especially since I loved the movie. But it made the movie look like shit.
Started reading From Hell today. I'm really liking it so far.
I'm gonna have to drop V into my basket now, Pete!
I've got a few other Graphic Novels in there, waiting for me to buy them. Scalped, The Walking Dead, Sleeper, Incognito, Criminal, Sleeper.
How did you find out about those ones?
V is only my second graphic novel. My first being Watchmen. I loved Watchmen and thought that Alan Moore was a pretty safe bet for me.
Umm, a couple of people told me about The Walking Dead. I think Gregory (misterwoe) was the first, after he read the first chapter to a zombie noir novella i'm writing. Scalped was from someone here. I just saw that someone was reading it and it looked cool, so i thought i'd check it out. The noir ones (Criminal, Incognito etc.) Mckay told me about. Said i'd dig them 'cause they're real pulpy and noir.
I've never been a big Graphic Novel dude, or a comic dude, but I have been keen to check more stuff out lately. I've only read Sin City, and a couple of others.
Matt - we have similar taste. What will I like?
Graphic novel-wise?
Yeah - graphic novel wise.
I'm a little picky here though. I don't like to have to buy a bunch of books in a series. I rather have a collected volume. Or a one volume story. I will probably buy all the Sin Cities and that will be the one where I buy a bunch of books from one series.
I did think that the Incognito book looked really good. That one found its way onto my amazon wishlist.
Yeah, well, like i said, Pete, I'm not very well read in that genre, or area, but I'd go with Sin City, It was great. Very noir. Buy one book at a time, or you can buy the whole set in a collection, but that's like 80 bucks or something, I think. Other than that, I'd get Criminal or Incognito (I think they've both been optioned for film too). Like I said, I haven't read them yet, but they'll be in my next big order from Amazon.
You guys might like 100 Bullets, I think you can get that in a compendium book by now.. also Transmetropolitan is pretty awesome.
Checking out both of them right now. Thanks, Kit.
Transmetro is Warren Ellis! RADDDDDDD!
Oh yeah, it's all kinds of cool. Cyberpunk + Gonzo journalism?
Yessss
Here, take my credit card and you charge me whatever the fuck amount you think is right.
Who is Warren Ellis and why does he keep sending me notes?
This is why we can't have nice things.
Turns out there's two Warren Ellis'. I was thinking it was Nick Cave's long-term musical partner. Turns out it's the other one.
Nick Cave has a Bernie Taupin?
This is why we can't have nice things.
sort of... and he plays the bouzouki!
Thanks for the Memories by Cecilia Ahern and Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Warren Ellis is a bad ass though - that is if it's the one that wrote Crooked Little Vein. I'm checking those out right now Kit.
I can't find a complete volume for 100 Bullets. But it still looks pretty cool. I might check it out.
You can get the Walking Dead as a compendium too now. I hear a lot of good things about Chew (check it out on amazon, a hell of a premise, concept).
I remember years ago I got the Contortionists Handbook for Christmas, and it was snowing, and I laid in bed and read the whole thing in one sitting.
I moved through the days like a severed head that finishes a sentence --- Amy Hempel
Interested to hear what you think of this, I read it last year.. thought the ideas were interesting but it fell a little flat. I couldn't make myself care about the characters.
Also, I read they made a movie of it, with Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan? I can't even imagine.

Preacher, Transmetropolotin, Sandman.

Well this is exactly why I'm reading it now. I've had it for some time and now I wanna read it before seeing the movie. Same with Eat Pray Love, though I still have to get hold of that.

Ahh, I see! I'll probably check out the movie just to see what they made of it. There's a pretty cool creative team behind it at least. (Alex Garland and Mark Romanek)
Loving The New York Trilogy, btw!
I actually started reading No Country For Old Men. It's blowing my mind. Fuck McCarthy is good.

Thanks everybody. Now I have a shitload to look through.

Jane had a soul last time I checked.. Jane, did you sell your soul?
I think I will probably at least attempt to read 2666 at some point, but admittedly it's not high on the priority list.
