Wampeters, Foma and Granfalloons by KURT VONNEGUT
Brothers by Da Chen, about a family during the Chinese revolution.
When is pygmy out in the UK, or is amazon lying to me?
"What cha readin' fer??"
I know i'm late with this thread but, did you by chance read Blindness by Jose? I bought the book becasue i've heard some good things about it but I havent had the chance to crack it open yet.
I just wrestle with you in my dreams and wake up making love to a pillow.
We did a book discussion of Blindness a while back ('07).
It was a tough read because of the 3 page long paragraphs (which is how all of his books are I think). But once you got used to it - it was a really good book.

let me know if this is any good. I grabbed it the other day but haven't read it yet...
Meh, it was ok but by far my least favourite of his.
Now I'm reading 'Handling The Undead' by John Ajvide Lindqvist (he also wrote Let The Right One In).
What did you think about Less Than Zero? I finished it last night and enjoyed it, but didn't like it as much as I thought I would. And now I don't know what to read... all out of books, so it's off to Amazon I go...
I got The Gargoyle in the other day. I read the dust jacket and it doesn't look like there are many gargoyles in it.
I'll work my way through it after 1982, janine, which i don't remember if i described or not before, but looks like the perfect mix of Henry Miller and House of Leaves/Raw Shark texts.

When I first finished it, I thought "Wow. That was really stupid." Then I read half of Pygmy, and yesterday I when I was driving to the grocery store, it just hit me. All of a sudden I couldn't stop thinking about the book, it all made sense. I actually got really sad for a couple of hours and ended up going to a park by a river and just sitting there for a while.
So all in all, I guess it was pretty good. I don't think a book has ever had such a sneak attack on me before...

Have you read House of Leaves yet?
Yeah, that is one of my favorite books.
EDIT: House of Leaves didn't sneak attack me though. I was engrossed while reading it, and it lingered in my head for weeks and months. I wasn't surprised.

Serve the People! Yan Lianke. He's very into describing scenery and i like that!

Still haven't finished Pygmy, I have about forty pages left. I'm also reading The Book Thief and being forced to reread Lord of the Flies in school.
"The sun may burn brightly, and the faces of children may be plump and achingly sweet, but in the air we breathe, in the water we drink and in the food we share, there will always be darkness in the world."

I just finished the Gargoyle, and looooooooved it. Wow, what a great story. Kind of life changing/affirming for me anyway...
And now...operative me begins eye scan brain retention of book new Palahniuk Pygmy. (I'm trying here, people).
I still havn't finished Mao II or Crime and Punishment. I forgot about reading lately.

Thanks! I am thinking about reading soon. I am doing a 50 book challenge thing this year. I'm only on book 8, when this time last year I was on book 25 but school has taken most of my time these days.

Im on book 62. Stick in there.

I only compare them because of their use of weird typography in telling the story.
Did I get some crappy off-brand off Raw Shark? Mine didn't have THAT much typeset fancery...
you didn't peel the binding off to get the overlay sheet to put on each page and see the pictogrpahs?

Thanks! My exams were wednesday and i'm only taking one class this semester so i'm going to catch up on my reading!

Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Have you already read American Gods? I think it enhances Anansi Boys, but isn't necessary to the experience...
Years ago. Loved it. Meaning to read Anansi Boys for a long while but haven't had a lot of reading time.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I just finished Dead Boys by Richard Lange.
It's a short story book. It was very raw. If I had to describe it to somebody - I would probably say it was a cross between Raymond Carver's writing and Denis Johnson's stories from Jesus' Son. Or something like that.
Wow, I'm only reading book 8 this year.
Think for yourself. Question Authority.
I felt good for being on book 5...

The Road (Cormac McCarthy)

Excellent choice.
I'm rereading On the Road and finishing Dharma Bums by Kerouac. Waiting on my amazon order to come in: The Lie, Franney and Zooey, Life of Pi, and that dvd of The Band that came out in the 70's, "The Last Waltz."
we oughta make up little sig banners. Like Pro-The Road vs Agin-The Road. SO you can tell at a glance who likes a popular book or not. And just change em every month or so, like Pro-Pygmy - Con-Pygmy, so on and so forth. It would be like Cult Awards but without all the voting, you just pick the banner you want and go!
i was thinking how on some sites, you'll see people with those little slim banners, like maybe 50X200 and they'll stack em on top of each other. I don't know if there's an actual term for those things. I'll try to find an example.
Columbine by Dave Cullen
I know what you're talking about. I was just being stupid.
Pygmy...and while I still don't like the way he's employing certain things, I kind of like it so far. We'll see...
I finished "We need to talk about Kevin" last night, I liked it very much.
Next is "When will there be good news?" By Kate Atkinson.
Just finished up Kafka on The Shore, and Einsteins Dreams.
How we are hungry by Eggers is next.
On a whim, Pygmy.
Not the worst thing I've read this year.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Finished The Littlest Hitler: Stories by Ryan Boudinot. It was really good.
Now started Shampoo Planet by Douglas Coupland. I've been meaning to get around to reading more Coupland. I love his writing - but I keep forgetting about him lately.
Not the worst thing I've read this year.
What IS the worst thing you've read this year?
The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson... would probably be enjoying it more if I cared even a little bit about architecture.
"I thought I had mono once for an entire year. Turns out I was just really bored."

The Subject Steve by Sam Lipsyte.
Finished The Lie last night.... which was pretty much just like The Average American Male, but I liked Kultgen's first book, so this one was above average, too.
About to start Franney and Zooey, on recommendation of teh cultz.
I'm surprised you haven't read that yet. I loved it.
Currently 'The Collected Stories' by Amy Hempel, then 'Kiss Me Judas' by Will Christopher Baer.
Thanks Berto!

All these people reading Pygmy... come and join in the discussion Gosh!

I read Blood Porn by Will Christopher Baer last night. It was very interesting.

Wow - I didn't know she put out another book since Grotesque - which I've been meaning to read.
I loved Out. But I still haven't gotten around to reading the other one.
Let me know what you think of Real World.
Hey Peter, I finished it. The book came out last year and is only 200 pages. I liked it butit was never going to be as good as Out which is one of the main reasons I got into Japanese fiction. Its definitely worth reading especially since I hadnt high hopes fopr it after reading some reviews beforehand.
