Since I've been talking about doing a non-fiction book - I wanted to mention Mary Roach.

Her two books that are out right now are amazing. Anybody that likes dark yet funny needs to check these out.

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers is her first book. It's about everything that can or does happen to your physical body after you die. And it's funny - which is sort of weird but she makes it work.

amazon wrote:
Stiff is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers—some willingly, some unwittingly—have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

In this fascinating, ennobling account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries—from the anatomy labs and human-sourced pharmacies of medieval and nineteenth-century Europe to a human decay research facility in Tennessee, to a plastic surgery practice lab, to a Scandinavian funeral directors' conference on human composting. In her droll, inimitable voice, Roach tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.

The next book she has is called Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife. And the title is pretty self explanitory. She investigates everything from ghost and communicating with them to trying to find the soul.

amazon wrote:
The best-selling author of Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers now trains her considerable wit and curiosity on the human soul. What happens when we die? Does the light just go out and that's that—the million-year nap? Or will some part of my personality, my me-ness persist? What will that feel like? What will I do all day? Is there a place to plug in my lap-top?" In an attempt to find out, Mary Roach brings her tireless curiosity to bear on an array of contemporary and historical soul-searchers: scientists, schemers, engineers, mediums, all trying to prove (or disprove) that life goes on after we die. She begins the journey in rural India with a reincarnation researcher and ends up in a University of Virginia operating room where cardiologists have installed equipment near the ceiling to study out-of-body near-death experiences. Along the way, she enrolls in an English medium school, gets electromagnetically haunted at a university in Ontario, and visits a Duke University professor with a plan to weigh the consciousness of a leech. Her historical wanderings unearth soul-seeking philosophers who rummaged through cadavers and calves' heads, a North Carolina lawsuit that established legal precedence for ghosts, and the last surviving sample of "ectoplasm" in a Cambridge University archive. 10 illustrations.

Now she has a new book coming out. I didn't even now this until earlier today. Amazon hasn't posted a release date for it yet or a description for that matter. But if it's anything like her others - it will be one to watch out for.

Anybody else here enjoy her work?
Anybody want to add anything?

Nachos, every day! Dying sounds great, I don't know why people get so upset about it.

Stiff was great. I still haven't picked up Spook yet. It seems a little too "sequelly"? to me.
This Bonk sounds interesting though, as long as it's just not all on giant machines with dildo plungers on them.

I read Stiff a few years ago. I didnt even know she had another book out until our very own McMuddle sent a care package to me. The package included Spook. It was pretty good. It was really good, in fact. Its not sequelly, in my opinion. It covers the topic well.
