Thoughts? Comments? Should I read it?

I've been wanting to read some Ellis and it's one of the only books currently on stock at our campus book store.

Read the first few pages to see if you like the writing style.

Bret Easton Ellis is a god. You should read everything that he's ever written.

Ellis is a wonderfully creative author. Less then zero is a great afternoon read. Look at The Rules of Attraction for something darker. I have recently finished American Psycho, and it's not my favorite... Glamorama is on drugs, and as for Lunar Park, it's his best work, not to mention non-fiction.

I hope this helps.

I didn't like it either. I think there are a lot of differing opinions on BEE. Of all of his novels, I liked American Psycho best. But it appears his work impacts people in very different ways.

Less than zero is one of my favourite books. The characters are really intense despite their cluenessless and vanity. i enjoyed the mood of the whole book (being set in the 80's and all...) the good for nothing parties that seemed cool but left a hollow feeling inside when you wake up the morning after...the portrait of an idle youth.
Very good book and an addictive one too.

sorry if my english sucks.

I'm reading Less Than Zero right now, and I have to say it's really good. If you're looking for something darker as someone said earlier you should read the Rules of Attraction. So far Rules of Attraction is my favorite book by Ellis.

It's not that they're bi, it's that they're more bisexual than they are a helicopter*. They are so amoral that it simply doesn't matter who they have sex with. They're being reborn every minute and they're confused by reality, they just try to go with the flow and if they're working toward anything, consciously, it's social status.

Less Than Zero is very worth the read. So is American Psycho, Rules of Attraction, and The Informers.

I kind of liked Lunar Park. I'm kind of alone in that boat.

It didn't stand out for me. I read it, I was done with it, I hardly remember a thing about it. Except that I wasn't particularly impressed.

I really did love The Rules of Attraction, it's not my favourite, but I did enjoy it a lot.
You'll like the movie. Read the book first though Happy

I found Less Than Zero to be a bit of a let down. American Psycho on the other hand was genius.

I just finished it yesterday. It was my first BEE. Loved it, and will be reading Rules of Attraction very soon.

I just read this about two weeks ago. Having only read American Psycho by Ellis, I judged the novel by those standards, which isn't entirely fair. Nonetheless, I was very pleased with the novel and consider it to be more "recommendable" than American Psycho (that's 150 pages of lifestyle details before it gets moving with a plot).

Psycho and Less Than Zero both share the "problem" with rising action. You will seem to read a long way into these stories and not feel like anything's happening. Of course, when some of the plot action is revealed, it's all the more disturbing because this technique was employed.

Less Than Zero is a disturbing novel. However, what disturbed me the most was not some of the events that transpired near the end, but Clay's failure to self-actualize and have an impact on the world he was returning to. Any one of us would likely have taken a stance toward Blair and Victor and tried to change how they were living. Clay's failures are both moral and behavioral. He has no courage, no ethics and no force of personality. His ennui as a reaction to what his friends were devolving into had a serious impact on me.

Having read Less Than Zero, Ellis' other novels are now on my summer reading schedule. This novel proved to me that Ellis is better than a "one-trick pony" with regard to American Psycho. In fact, I may wind up reading everything he's done.

All that aside, I highly recommend Less Than Zero.

Less Than Zero started me on the path towards discovering Chuck (progression: Lunar Park -> Less Than Zero -> Rules of Attraction -> Choke -> Survivor...etc).

I can't praise B.E.E enough on this novel as it was his first and written while he was still in college (as am I!). It's dark in a way that leaves the reader not feeling so much depressed or angry as simply drained of morals. I agree with whoever said that it's not about being gay or bisexual so much as it's just a moral vaccuum where every piece of reality and understanding are simply tossed out the window. Each character is self-destructive and they just don't care.

All in all, loved everything Ellis has written except Glamouria (I have no plans on reading it). I recommend this book to start off anybody reading B.E.E for the first time, then moving from there as it only gets better! After you read Rules of Attraction, watch the movie and finally appreciate something James van der Beek (from Dawson's Creek) has done.

Oh, and I can't wait for the next book which a follow-up on Less Than Zero.

I cannot stand Less Than Zero. I found it very typical; it just didn't grab me.
I liked American Psycho quite a bit, though. (the last third was a little weak)

I thought Less Than Zero was incredible. It was the first BEE novel I read, and I've been a devout fan ever since.
