JUNKIE Fiction
I love junkie fiction, anything to do with alcohol and drugs! I know most of the popular ones like Requiem for a dream and Leaving Las Vegas, Candy and Trainspotting etc but can anyone enlighten me on some more?
Cain's Book by Alexander Trocchi
Junky by William Burroughs

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by the late great Hunter S. Thompson is a necessary addition to the list. I'm not sure if that's what was meant by Barca's "Leaving Las Vegas" or not. I thought that was crappy Nicolas Cage flick.
A more obscure, but I think bloody awesome book, is The Sound of My Voice by Ron Butlin. A second person novella written via the eyes of an alcoholic who works at a biscuit company. A quality piece of Scottish literature that comes highly recommended by Irvine Welsh himself.

No it's a book too. I remember around the time the film was released my grandad was reading the book and talking about it to an adult. I said something like, hey I didn't know it was a book too he shouted, it's got nothing to do with you! Well, I was taken aback let me tell you.
I thought he meant Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, otherwise I would have said it.

I meant LEAVING LAS VEGAS, the movie was crap but I loved the book, as for FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS thats one of my alltime favourites,
Ps thanks guys for the input:)

permanent midnight was the be all end all of heroine novels in my opinion. It caught my attention because i was in the same boat you were at the time "OOH Decadent drug stories are cool!" it satisfied that urge and then shifted and made me never want to touch or read about that shit ever again.
-The Rum Diary by Hunter, not about junk but it is about drinking. i liked it
-Candy: A Novel of Love and Addiction by Luke Davies, a pretty good book about heroin
- anything by bukowski, his books are basically all about drinking, i would say factotum or post office
-Bret Easton Ellis writes good drug stories, even though his stories do not revolve around drugs.
those are just a few i could think of off the top of my head.

cheers, I have read all of the above and found each of them very interesting especially CANDY by Luke Davies.
being stereotypically Irish, we love to drink and novels like Leaving Las Vegas show you what its like at rock bottom. Its a long time since I read LLV but someone told me the book was left as a suicide note, does anyone know is that true?
The film version of Candy is quite good as well. I'd suggest seeing it after reading the book.

Excellent, I didnt know there was a movie aswell, gonna put that on my wishlist
i cant believe someone hasnt mentioned a Million Little Pieces yet
The Basketball Diaries was pretty good.
A Scanner Darkly is interesting, but less Junkie Fiction than most of these other suggestions.
Wisdom's Maw: The Acid Novel is also interesting.
"...human speech is like a cracked tin kettle, on which we hammer out tunes to make bears dance when we long to move the stars."
I don´t know if you can find the english version, but this book is really good
"tokyo ya no nos quiere", by Ray Loriga.
well... Fear and loathing in las vegas was great... no doubt among my personal favourites as well... but the rum diary was kind of a dissappointment in comparison, at least in my opininon... but an ok read, though... Bukowski could also be mentioned here.. at least if one thinks of alcohol...
Shouts...
How about Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson?
Do not speak- unless it improves on silence.

That's one of the books I try to read at laest every few months. I can't believe that I didn't think of recommending it... I recommend it to everyone.

Actually, there's a book called Cocain Romance, or Novel With Cocaine by M. Ageyev that I read about the other day. I suggest looking into it, though it's real author is a bit of a mystery as it's generally accepted Ageyev is a pen-name. Nabokov has been suggested as a possible author, but regardless of who wrote it, it sounds like a classic piece of Junkie Fiction. Last Exit to Brooklyn is by Hubert Selby Jr is as good as, if not better than Requiem for a Dream.
Other than that, I don't know. Try wikipedia.
