July 2010- Why wont this rain stop and I am reading...
apropos of the thread title I am reading Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter
I bought this last month but havent read it yet. Let me know what you think?
Unlubricated by Arthur Nersesian
This is he only Nersesian I havent read YET.
Dogrun really put me off Nersesian. At one point the girl the described putting on her make-up as, "Applying my cosmetic war paint" and I thought, what the fuck women has he met who would think like that? I don't like his style.
I'm reading Native Son by Richard Wright who is just my literary love of the moment.

It's very enjoyable so far - about 100 pages in. Just the second Nersesian for me. I read Chinese Takeout a few months ago. Which of the others did you like the most? I was thinking of picking up either Suicide Casanova or The Swing Voter of Staten Island.

Dogrun is my least favourite Nersesian, it almost put me off him. Amy check out Suicide Casanova sometime and if you don't lke it I will send you candy and an apology.
Haha, okay, DEAL.
I just finished The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It was better than I expected, I haven't read a good mystery in a long time. Usually I avoid 'mystery' novels b/c they're too pigeonholed within their genre, but I found this one to be quite unique. It was nothing like how the marketing led me to believe it would be. I expected something more like a William Gibson novel or something like that. I'll probably check out the movie and sequels sometime in the future.
Now I'm moving on to Demian, by Herman Hesse.
"[B]eing good is a fearful occupation; men strain at it and sometimes break in two." - Ray Bradbury

I just finished Orangutan by Colin Broderick. It was ok, pretty forgettable in my opinion. Currently I'm struggling through a zine called First Kiss. Most of it is either terribly written or just boring. I paid $9 so I'm going to finish so I get my moneys worth but so far I wouldn't recommend it.
Of all that is written I love only that which is written with blood. Write with blood: and you will discover that blood is spirit. -Nietzsche
Yes! A bit unfocused and unruly at times, but there are scenes that will stick with you, long after you've realized that you're...Already Dead.
(Boo.)

It may be cliche, but The Fuckup is one of my favorite books. I haven't read any other Nersesian though.

is it in second person!?
is it in second person!?
Nope, just Punnovision. ("The audience is wincing.")
Seriously, though, give it a gander if you're drawn to gun-toting travelogues through California and Beyond. It's like Ellroy on acid.

sold.
Schopenhauer's Essays and Aphorisms should be over later today. Then probably Pollan's In Defense of Food, if I can figure out where I put it.
There is hope, but not for us.
Agreed. They skipped way too much.
Also, Middlesex was dreadfully boring, like skip 30 pages at a time boring. After something as fantastic as Virgin Suicides, it was a big letdown.
Middlesex is great, you just have to really work at it. It honestly did make me think about transsexualism in a completely new light.
Also when I said In Defense of Food before, I was lying. I already read that. I meant The Omnivore's Dilemma.

I was wondering because I thought you'd already read it.
I thought Middlesex was boring too, but maybe I should try it again because I skipped over 30 pages chunks of it too.
I started the Raw Shark Texts at Pete's urging. He even sent me a copy but the P.O. lost the book and delivered an empty envelope!
And as soon as I'm done reading I, Fatty - I'm going to reread The Raw Shark Text.
I hope you enjoy it.
Started Breakfast of Champions.
I hope you enjoy it.
yet another one of those books that's been sitting there, urging me to read it but for some reason i don't like being urgedby a book, so it continues it's unread life on my shelf. maybe i should read it next too and then we can all get our shark-talk on.

I think this painting of a dude vaguely resembles Berto.
I'm reading On the Third Day by Rhys Thomas, which came out yesterday. I'm going to make a book club thread for it when I'm done because I'm sure it'll appeal to a lot of people here. It's gripping. Loving it so far.
Funny, I thought Virgin Suicides was terribly overrated and boring. Middlesex starts slowly but it's epic, three generations of a greek family with a terrible secret. Just the historical research Eugenides did is brillant. Middlesex was an awesome book.

i just finished 'breathers- a zombie lament', by S.G. Browne...i thought it was hilarious...
It's still rain. I need the new Dexter book, Dexter is Delicious to cheer me up.
oooh! i love dexter! i've seen the series, are the books just as good? i have the first one, but have not started it yet
I love the books and I hear the series is different after teh first one but just as good.
There is aDexter thread here you should check out. I think there are a few people who have read the books and watched the series.
i think there was a thread around somewhere discussion the books. or maybe it was in the Tv thread, but it turned to the books. i can't remember. i haven't read hem myself but from what everyone says, and derek's taste is impeccable, they're pretty damn tasty.
You guys are funny. That thread is like 4 down from this one. lol
I just finished Less Than Zero. It made me long for love, and then I cried.
Breakfast of Champions next.
oh. haha. i am a 'recent posts' man, myself. because i'm on here so damn regularly that i can simply catch up with the going ons by hitting up there. so, i only come into the actually sub-forums to play every now and then. or when i'm looking for old threads that have been forgotten.
anyway. can't read: writing book. going mad. etc etc.
Fair enough. Did you see the news about The Contortionist's Handbook?
yes yes yes!!!
Breakfast of Champions next.
I'm halfway through Breakfast, it's a pretty funny read, if you won't go into the deep shit it deals with. I like it so far, it's pretty catchy.

I've been meaning to read that for as long as I've owned it - which is many years.
Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis
What news? You mean that it's been re-optioned for another year, and that there may be hope for a rewrite?
I posted this in the Book Club's Pointless Announcement Thread:
New print run of "The Contortionist's Handbook" at the warehouse pending arrangements with new MacAdam/Cage distributor.
I thought this was a pretty good book. The story was a little bit all over the place, but it was some tight writing and a quick read.

It's not bad so far. Only just started really though. I'm not sure if everything is really happening or not.
Ah. Yeah, I think they've been sitting on those for a couple of months now, at least that's what I recall per a previous M/C update.
Also, as I mentioned, production on the film is delayed and the producer extended their option. Dunno what exactly that will mean positively or negatively, but hopefully it'll give them second thoughts about the script and let someone else take a crack at it.
Didn't Craig say that they butchered his script?
Give Baer the job!!!
Craig already said he'd be down for that, and i'm fairly certain it would make for one badass colaboration; one that everyone would like the taste of.
Extremely loud and incredibly close by Jonathan Safran Foer.
Currently, I'm halfway through Mister B. Gone which is being read along with Fahrenheit 451, German Made Simple, and Cracking the SAT.

"The sun may burn brightly, and the faces of children may be plump and achingly sweet, but in the air we breathe, in the water we drink and in the food we share, there will always be darkness in the world."
Ugly Man, stories by Dennis Cooper.

I've never read Already Dead, so I couldn't tell you.
I have read Angels - it was pretty good. Totally different style.
And Resuscitation of a Hanged Man - also pretty good. Also totally different style.
