Jason Star (The Follower)
Jason Starr is a freaky looking guy from Brooklyn.
His characters are detestable. Which is fine because as soon as the book starts the main character's life starts falling apart and turning to hell. They are always very jealous, usually physically weak people, who are selfish and superficial. They submit to their own hatred, jealousy, or some other vile trait, and it is that which puts them on this road to hell.
I don't think it's meant to be religious at all, but more so just about how bad people end up getting what they deserve. It's crime noir that as far as I know always takes place in New York, and it gets pretty funny at times. His books hold your attention and are fast reads.
Hard Feelings is about a guy that works in an office, and one day he runs into a guy that molested him when they were both kids. He seeks revenge and it's as clumsy as you can expect that kind of thing to go. The anxiety and paranoia are well displayed.
Cold Caller is about a telemarketer that decides to kill his boss. This is his first novel and I think one of the best.
Tough Luck isn't as dark as the other two, but it's equally enjoyable.
These are the only ones I read and then I decided to give this guy a rest. He has a new book out called The Follower, and I have a feeling this is going to be one of his best:

Ive read Tough Luck, Fake ID and Cold Caller. I really like his books, he reminds me a little of Jim Thompson but his books are based in NYC. I own Lights Out andBust. Im especially interested in how good Bust is since he vo-wrote it with one of my favourites Ken Bruen.
