It's a good book. I don't think that is was as good as all the hype, but definately worth reading. It's amazing what JT has been through in his life and been able to pull through and make something of himself.
As for a book description... it's sort of like "The Wizard of Oz" with truck stop whores.
Just the other day I got:
American Psycho by Bret Easton Elis
Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
Syrup by Maxx Barry
and my dad got Deus Irae by Phillip K. Dick and some other dude, can't remember the name, which I might end up reading because it sounds pretty cool.
Claudius : What about my father, who was your son? And Germanicus, who was my brother? Did you poison them?
Livia : No. Your father dies of his wounds, and Placina poisoned Germanicus with out instructions from me. But I had marked them both down for death. They were both infected with that infantile disorder known as 'Republicanism.'
Thanks to Dennis' recommendation on The Velvet I looked up Shella on Amazon and ended up reading ten pages of it there. I decided that I better stop there and went to the store and bought it. I also got Wild Sheep Chase, so I can hopefully get to it in time to discuss it in the bookclub.
- Shella by Andrew Vachss
- A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami

I almost bought Junky at least 10 times
heh. I do that with everything. Walk through the bookstore with a giant stack thinking of which one to get (which ones are easier to get at library) and then leave with one or two. We finally got Junky though last Christmas - haven't read it yet.
We just got (Can't say "I" because "I" doesn't have any money) the Anthony Kiedis book and the Dave Navarro book - FINALLY. geez it took YEARS to come out.
And Lullaby was on one of the "Former Bestseller" tables for $4! WTF? lol.

Last week I read Jennifer Government. This week I read Breakfast of Champions. Last night I started on Syrup. I think I might go back for a second dosage of Vonnegut next week.
I bought a new copy of 'Little Women' the other day because my old one only has part one and nothing happens in it, Beth doesn't even die. When people would talk about Little Women and say 'When Beth died I was right sad, me' I thought 'I don't remember that happening...' but had the sense to keep my mouth shut. Now I can experience the sadness for myself.
At Waterstone's today;
Jennifer Government-Max Barry [everyone loves it, I have to know what that's all about]
On the Road-Jack Kerouac [When I got back today I thought, did I buy this? Oh well, hopefully it'll be cool]
Rebecca-Daphne Du Maurier [see above]
They Shoot Horses, Don't They?-Horace McCoy [For next semester's 20th Century American Literature module]
I Should Have Stayed Home-Horace McCoy [This semester's American Film and Literature]
I love buying books! <3
“But they danced down the streets like dingledodies, and I shambled after as I’ve been doing all my life after people who interest me, because the only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, made to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never say a commonplace thing but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes Awww!”

Wow. That sounds pretty cool.
Kerouac would follow me around if he knew me.
I'm bringing this thread back because I really thought it was cool.
I put my order in to amazon just a few minutes ago.
- The Contortionist's Handbook (for my brother, I already own it and love it)
- Good Omens (for the book club - I think I would have read this either way though, it sounds really interesting)
- Jennifer Government (I put this one off long enough)
Chemical Pink
Syrup
Blackbox
The Ice at the Bottom of the World

Read Chemical Pink first, it's bad-ace and required cultie reading.
I bought a bunch of books since this thread was last around. I got all three Will Christopher Baer Phineas Poe books, a Raymond Chandler book with three Phil Marlowe books in it.
Bought a few books as a surprise for my gentleman caller too.
Good Omens - Gaiman/Prachett for the Book Club
Geek Love - Dunn

Last week i bought...
Gun, With Occasional Music - Jonathan Lethem (Lethem's debut)
Mailman - J. Robert Lennon (I've been told "it's great...fucking hilarious")
Lullaby - CP (Hardback for $2 at Barnes & Noble)
Yea, that does say $2….and there were no strong-arm tactics, ski masks, threats, or guns involved in that transaction
"I'm going on the record as it's not good for my rehabilitation to be around hard narcotics and funk music. Write it down."
-Barrett Rude Sr. to his parole officer

I just finished Mailman last week.... I'd say... lower your expectations and you may enjoy it.... mine were high and it was too many words about too little for my liking..... It's probably just because I was expecting too much - I hope you enjoy it. JRL replies to email, if you go to his website.

Last Saturday I went to see "Nothing" and "The End of the Century" with a friend of mine and his brother, and while we were waiting for the box office to open, we came across a used book/record/anything store right next to it, and I found Less than Zero by BEE for $6 (Canadian) - a steal when you consider how Chapters/McNally's sells it for more than three times that...
From recommendations on the forum, I bought:
The Contortionists Handbook, by Craig Clevenger (It was great)
Shella, by Andrew Vachss (also very good)
Porno, Irvine Welsh (gonna read Trainspotting first)
I also bought A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole.
I read it years ago but couldn't remember the author or title. Had to do a google search of what I remembered. It's funny as hell, I recommend it.
