Anyone read the book?
Anyone see the previews?

I have and can't ignore the blatantly obvious plot connections.
If you don't know what house of Leaves is about than you shouldn't even be here, as for those who don't know what Silent Hill 4 is about, let me tell you. The forth installment in the series, will have you playign the character of a man trapped in his apartment. He enters a door, that leads him to many othe rhallways and deeper corridors etcetera etcetera.

I've read House of Leaves but never heard of Silent Hill 4. I looked it up and it's a video game. I thought it was going to be a movie.

Is House Of Leaves any good? It's on my list of books to read... but that list is incredibly long.

i started to read it, but it was boring and felt to gimmicky. that said someone later summarized the plot (in fairly great detail) of the navidson project (the main part of the book) and it was a damn good story. so, in other words, debatable.
EDIT: as for silent hill 4, is that only going to be on ps2 or is it coming on any other consoles? i'd like to play it just to see the similarities

Cliff: Why was it "disgusting?"

The apartment door with the chains/ locks alone is a blatant rip off of HoL. Not to mention the game's plot.
Cliff: Why was it "disgusting?"
Without trying to sound like some hardcore melodramatic punk, this book is more of an experience than a simple old read. Everyone who I've talked with about the book has told me somehow it changed their perception on things, and during reading had extreme feelings. When iw as reading, i got a huge feelings of feeling sick and disgusted, like my room had been closed up for months on ned and the air I was breathing was old and stale. I could barely finish the book, it's a real experience and different people pull different interpretations and different feelings from it all.
Funnys tory, while reading HoL, i was working in a ware house with about 4 other guys. Anyways i was on one side by myself they were on the other, I had just gotten tot he part of the book where (spoiler: the expedition team goes into the depth of darkness), when all of a sudden all the lights in the ware house went out and i heard doors shutting. I was in this huge empty ware house, in the pitch black darkness. Suffice to say I felt quite uneasy and went into a brief panic.

To the dork who said shit about it not being like Chuck, well God forbid someone reads something other than Chuck, I mean the odasity of them!

To the guy who was wonderring what the game would include etcetera, well I've seen footage and it's a bit disturbing, flesh growing on walls, babys with two heads and spider bodies, and painitings with half of someone sticking out of them scremaing (very Hellraiser-esque). The game looks interesting, but not nearly as interesting as the first one.

Each game in the Silent Hill franchise has pushed the envelope in psychological horror within the video game business. Silent Hill 2 had some of the most graphic imagery I've seen in a game, especially with Pyramid Head and the leg things. Every game should include a scene of monsters fucking.

Hands down, the best part of the series isn't the gore or even the storyline, it's the atmosphere. These are not action games - it's all about knowing something is coming, but not wear it is or when it show.

I agree. There are way too many good books and great authors to just read Chuck. I mean if you just read Chuck you would be reading one book every 1-2 years.

Chuck is a great author and all, but I'm not too interested in his stuff naymore. To me, Choke, Fight Club and Survivor cannot be beat, and I don't really want to read something by Chuck that will beat them, so I've stopped reading him. I couldn't even get myself through Invisible Monsters.

there are a few variations of the book:

Blue Version: the word 'house' is in blue

Red Version: the word 'minotaur' and struck passages in red, word 'house' in grey

then there were signed limited versions available (about 1200); some(1000) with a blue 'z' for Zampano, fewer (150)with a red 'JT' for Johnny Truant, 15 with a purple 'PHL' for Pelafina Heather Lievre, and one (1) signed 'Mark Z. Danielewski'. This is for each of the red and blue american versions. there are other versions also worth having. check abebooks.com

you have to read the book to really understand, though.

TLC, i can't fathom the scope of your library. i read a lot, but i get books from the library, borrow them from other people, and give mine away all the time. my collection far surpasses the average reader, no doubt, but i have a feeling you have piles upon piles of books...i imagine your house to be a maze of book piles. one huge pile is HOL only, and the pile moves every so often w/o anyone ever touching it...

actually, i have this bookshelf, where i put my books, right? it's a little bigger on the inside than on the outside....

(aaarrrrggghhhh!!!!!!!! ticketswest.com won't let me buy Pixies tix!!!!!!!!!!)

I bought a house a year ago, but haven't had time to get most of my book out of boxes in the garage (about 30 boxes), so i've only had what I bought in the last year - about 175 books - all neatly shelved in a glass-doored bookshelf.

sorry for speculating you were untidy with your book-keeping. i've got a few plastic shelving units jammed every-which-way with books. it's very ghetto, and god forbid anyone is looking for something specific.

good luck with getting those tickets. i had to battle with ticketmaster last week for bowie tix, and i'm still dazed.

I couldn't get into House Of Leaves at all, I'm not sure why. It seemed to drag a bit for me. But then so many people are saying how awesome it is, I'm almost tempted to give it another go. Almost.
I love Silent Hill though. When's the fourth one coming out? And is it just going to be for PS2 and PC (again *sobs*)?

3rd, Kl0pp, you have gotten around to reading it? Finally? Good. Don't worry, I haven't yet gotten around to reading Fear and Loathing, BUT I WILL THIS YEAR!

And 4th, is that an Eminem mugshot in that avatar?

im actually surprised to see this many people who've enjoyed this book. i can completely 100% understand why people would hate it, and why people can hate it with passion. however, the opposite is true, as well, i think. personally, this book just blew my mind. there's so many things going on that fit so perfectly, and the way it was written, i'd never seen anything like it. plus the story was good, too.

I am reading it right now. It is sometimes complicated and I have to read things twice. But I am enjoying the hell out of it. There is so much going on. It's just amazing to me that someone could compose all of that information and organize it so perfectly.

borges ripped off plato.

i was under the impression that 'postmodernism' (which you mentioned earlier, and are apparently grouping HOL into) was all about the ripping-off of ideas from other genres/disciplines/artists-artforms/etc....

derrida, by the way, if you want to get into -isms, is widely considered a 'deconstructivist' (well, the father of it, really), which is radically different in meaning and methodology as compared to a 'postmodernist'.

Alex...you win man. After all the bitching and yelling about the book being good, great, confusing, terrible, wonderful, I just ordered it off Amazon. So congrats for doing your part to help the economy my friend.

And to the dude who said that it sounded like an Oprah Book Club book, I recall that was The House of Sand and Fog which was a very depressing book turned movie. Plus Oprah is a whore and I'd aprecieate nobody bringing her up again if it can be avoided. Unless of course we are discussing her assasination.
