Ho Ho Ho (Santa not hookers) Its december and I am reading...
Im almost finished Wounded By Percival Everett, very good, whats everyone else reading?
I'm reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I really love it, it keeps breaking my heart then mending it again.
I'm still meandering through Moby-Dick. I don't want it to end.
in the betweentime i've started reading Albert Einstein:Creator and Rebel by Banesh Hoffmann. So far it's superb.
Tree of Smoke. Its going slowly.

Im starting Song for Kali by Dan Simmons.
That is the best book ever written. Objective opinion.

"I could have done worse!" exultantly cried the murderer Lebret, sentenced at Rouen to hard labor for life. — Félix Fénéon

i haven't read Brothers Karamozov yet, but i'm having a hard time thinking anything ever written as better than Moby-Dick.
I read Moby Dick in 24 hours. I loved it. But Karamazov is better.

maybe i'll read it right after i finish moby dick and compare em that way. but with that tag team match up anything i could possibly read ever after would be a let down! Oh Noes!
No, you still have Cryptonomicon to read, which has become one of my top three.

I've been flipping through Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain.
Knockemstiff just arrived - so I'll be reading that for the book club.

I'm going to assume you're talking dirty to me because I'm the Book Club god.
By the time I got to Karamazov I was burnt out on everyone crying out and fainting all the time in his books. I think I actually threw The Idiot against a wall when I was finished reading it. But my dad agrees with you, Phil! I read it for him.
In my objective opinion the greatest book ever written is One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Oh, I hated The Idiot!

Gideon's Spies (Gordon Thomas), about the history of the Mossad.

in the betweentime i've started reading Albert Einstein:Creator and Rebel by Banesh Hoffmann. So far it's superb.
As soon as I finish The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles (which I'm enjoying immensely), I'm going to start Moby Dick.

Im glad you are enjoying it Sam. Personally I hated it and couldnt get past the first chapter (thats why I sent it to you).....
JOKE!

I'm getting quite irritated reading it.
"Maybe a long life does have to be filled with many unpleasant conditions if it's to seem long. But in the event, who wants one?"
"I do," Dunbar told him.
"Why?" Clevinger asked.
"What else is there?"

I'm not sure if it's just the beards, but I always picture Herman Melville as the american version of Dostoevsky. Also, Phil's right. Nothing gets better than Brother's Karamozov. Nothing. Ever.
Next up for me is Friday Night Lights By H G Bissinger (I think). I want to read this before the football playoffs.

it's a joke that you hated the book or that that's the reason you sent it to her?
I'm reading Darkly Dreaming Dexter, by Jeff Lindsay. For the third time.
Excellent book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a big Arthur Nersesian fan.
I just started Hell's Half Acre, the third installment of the Phineas Poe trilogy by Will Christopher Baer. I looooooooved the first two books and am already loving this one just as much, 30 pages into it.
Another generation of readers. When will the soul rise and claim its rightful place once again!?
Yes! I love all his books. When you are done and perhaps at a loss for more Baer, he has short stories and essays on his website: http://www.willchristopherbaer.com/misc.php
Christopher Brookmyre - A Tale Etched In Blood And Hard Black Pencil
Halfway in, so far, so good.
Usually i struggle when reading books which draw on Scots dialect and Scots phrases. Not because i find it difficult, but because i find it cringeworthy. Being Scottish myself and living in Scotland, i usually just find myself picking holes in everything that i'm reading.
Not with this novel though, not in the slightest. This stuff about being at school is frighteningly accurate for what it's like growing up on the west coast of Scotland. I mean, most the situation could involve actual incidents and happenings from my school days. Quite remarkable really.

My pleasure! When I finished the first two and was waiting for Hell's Half Acre to come out I went internet crazy looking for his short stories. I had to join Nerve.com to read two. I also had to order back issues of BOMB magazine. It's much easier now with the website.
I have been reading the newspaper mostly. I just set aside the END OF POVERTY by Jeffrey Sacks to read HUNGRY PLANET: What the World Eats, a collection of photographs and essays. It's super interesting. Check out the thread here for an idea what it is about. http://chuckpalahniuk.net/forum/1000026/what-world-eats-photos
I also started HEAT by Bill Bruford about his experiences cooking in a Mario Batali kitchen. I am a fan of the "Soul of The Chef" series by Michael Ruhlman and this is similar. Recommended by Bug.
Next is A Winter's Bone by Daniel Woodrell, recommended to me by Nightrious
I'm starting The Raw Shark Texts for about the third or fourth time. I always get about a hundred pages in and lose interest, but I want to read it.

You lose interest?? I couldn't put The Raw Shark Texts down once I started it.
I put it down about 50 pages before the end and never picked it back up again...I went as far as I could, I did well to get that far as I can see =(
you ever notice that there's is NEVER more than two people together in that entire book?
Maybe when they're on the boat at the end it might be three of them together for like 2 pages, but that's it.
Excellent book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a big Arthur Nersesian fan.
I'm enjoying it so far. I recently went to a reading where he was reading from the second book, The Sacrificial Circumcision of the Bronx. It was pretty sweet.

Awesome. I bought The Sacrificial Circumcision of the Bronx last time I went to B&N. I'm going to start it as soon as I'm done with Hell's Half Acre.
I cant get into Tree of Smoke right now so I may move onto Lust by Geoff Ryman.

Just picked up Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
I just finished Last Exit to Brooklyn. I liked it a lot.
Just started Atonement by Ian McEwan.

I've been meaning to read Hell's Half Acre. Is it any better than Penny Dreadful? I really enjoyed Kiss me, Judas but wasn't so into Penny
starting knockemstiff but i really don't have time which sucks.
Just started Promenade of the Gods by Koji Suzuki.
Excellent book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a big Arthur Nersesian fan.

Penny is my personal favorite, but it is very different from KMJ and HHA.
Hells Half is brilliant and very similar to KMJ. HHA is more of a sequel to KMJ.
i got a copy of Strange Tales. a bunch of Rudyard Kipling short horror stories.
I also got a copy of Henry Miller's Opus Pistorum, simply because it was a hardback and had the original title on it.
Excellent book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a big Arthur Nersesian fan.

Mirka summed it up. HHA is very similar to KMJ...you can read HHA without reading Penny Dreadful and not miss anything important. I liked KMJ more than Penny Dreadful, but all three are phenomenal.
