Lisa Fremont, "Rear Window"
William Faulkner is actually considered a Southern Gothic writer. i don't know that i agree with that, but, well, there you have it.

Wow. This little thread got CRAZY. People telling me to abuse my girlfriend, people showing an alarming lack of respect for women as a whole, people questioning my masculinity in some kind of bizarre machoistic pissing-contest. Hell, I even got called stuffy.
Harry Crews - Blood & Grits
Yassuh.
Jim Thompson, of course.

Jim Goad. started reading "redneck manifesto" it's great. not just the ideas, but his writing style is sharp and crackling, like cheddar cheese.

You should read 'A Painted House.' All of the Southern, none of the lawyers.
There is hope, but not for us.

Have you read As I Lay Dying?
I loved it, it was challenging. 27 narrators or something, including the dead woman in the coffin. Read it a long time ago, should pick it up again.

Tom Robbins was born in the South.
Too bad he sucks.
There is hope, but not for us.
Hick/hack?

tom robbins is my favorite author of all time. even more so than chuck.
I prefer him to Chuck, I wouldn't say he's my favorite, he's definately a groovy dude though. I've only read four, Another Roadside Attraction, Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas, Fierce Invalids Home From hot Climates, and Jitterbug Perfume.
fierce invalids is the best of his (switters is my hero!) but you should read still life with woodpecker...v. good. villa incognito was good, too, but short-ish.
I'm gonna read em all.
What's the one that's "a love story that takes places in a pack of cigarettes," I almost got that one but picked up Another Roadside Attraction instead.
that's still life with woodpecker. ARA is my least favorite, i think.
I dislike him immensely, and I'm sad by this, because I feel like I should like him. I read two of his books, Roadside Attraction and Skinny Legs, and to be honest, his religion bashing annoyed the crap out of me. Once I got to the second book, I thought, "Wow...do you have anything else to say besides this?" When he stated that teaching your children religion is a form of child abuse, I gave up trying to like him.
Plus, I dislike his style of writing. His long, drawn out descriptions of inconsquential things, his weird analogies that connect to nothing logical. His shit endings. Thanks, but no thanks.
There is hope, but not for us.
I want to get into Tom Robbins...
I have read about 40 pages of Half Asleep in Frog Jammies but stopped, not because it was bad, but because I really don't like the narrative.
Jitterbug Perfume I tried, got about 30 pages into it but I couldn't get into it. I'm not a fan of anything medieval.
What are a couple of his better books aside from the 2 I mentioned? (preferrably the ones that are 400pgs. or less)
I am going to try once more.

Jitterbug Perfume is really slow to start. I only got through the first half because it said Tom Robbins on the cover and i knew he wouldn't let me down. The second half is much better.
Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas is supposed to be like that. The narrator changes as the book goes on.
Fierce Invalids Home from hot Climates is awesome, you should pick that up.
jane, that's really sad.
There are sadder things. If I'm going to dislike an author, I'd better have a reason, and I do. I can't really say the same for you and half the shit you throw up about why you dislike certain bands.
There is hope, but not for us.
People read Hitler's Mein Kampf, it doesn't mean they agree with it.
It's impossible to talk about music. It's "like dancing about architecture."
I read Tom Robbins. I didn't agree with him. Don't I have the right to not like him without being told I'm wrong/sad?
And furthermore, it is possible to talk about music. It may be clinical and devoid of musical meaning, but you can still talk about it. If you couldn't, I don't know why the hell they teach these things called music classes, or why there are countless forums, radio shows, TV channels, and books that tak about music.
There is hope, but not for us.
of course you can have an opinion, positive or negative. The reasoning behind your opinion is what I think is sad. You don't like him (mainly, your other points on his style, etc. i think are fine) because he has a beef with religion, particularily one which you're a part of. Christians have this tendency to get all worked up when people talk about their religion in any way other than positive. Now, that fits most groups, but Christians in particular.
Just because people do something doesn't mean it makes sense. Music classes are taught because music is an art, art is something we have decided to teach in schools. Forums, radio shows, TV and the kinda books you're talking about are all made to make money off bored people.

Holy shit, I'm not alone on believing this! What book was that?
It's not easy having a good time.
Even smiling makes my face ache.
Okay, I was probably too harsh in saying that he sucks, because although I don't like him, I don't really believe he's a bad writer. But I don't think it's unfair of me to not like him because of his religious message. I could read his books from an objective point of view, but why should I have to? That would be a partial compromise of who I am and what I stand for personally. I gave him a chance, I read some of his books. It doesn't mean I have to keep reading them just because everyone tells me my reasoning is wrong. If he were a misogynist, would you expect me to keep reading his work and say that I like it?
There is hope, but not for us.
Ok, I kinda misinterpreted you. I assumed (ass outta me) that you couldn't get past the religion thing. Maybe you can't. But is it that bad, that strong a message in hisbooks that it makes you wanna just stop reading him?
I think I could get past it if I wanted to, but like I said, why should I have to? I'm not going to tell you, or anyone else, not to read him, because these are my personal issues and beliefs, not anyone elses. And yes, I really do think he is that bad. He belittles Christianity and the people who believe in it. His characters who are Christian, and only the Christian ones, are always moronic and misled. I mean, the man wrote an entire book based upon the premise that the Catholic church faked the resurrection. He doesn't just have some little problem with zealots or out of date dogma, he hates Christianity as a whole. And there are lots of things to read in this world. I just don't feel it's worth my time to read anything else he wrote, because I know I wouldn't enjoy it.
There is hope, but not for us.
You haven't read Fierce Invalids, and you should. He's quite nice to you folks in that book.
I'm defending him because he's a fuckign genius.
The only Tom Robbins I've read is Still Life With Woodpecker. (that's the "love story in a pack of Camels" you were talking about).
I'm going to read more of his stuff, just to give him another chance, but I didn't think Woodpecker was all that. I actually agree with most of his ideas...I just don't care for his writing. It's as if he tries to cram a little "something clever" into each and every sentence. It's so syrupy sweet. And he uses a lot of puns. I HATE PUNS! There, I said it. Or shouted it, rather...

Mark Twain- Letters From The Earth. It's about Satan writing letters to God saying how the "human experiment" was a failure.
In my younger days, I read John Grisham. That was before I hated lawyers though.
