I feel he deserves his deserves his own thread. Im not a Keroauc fanatic by any means but I do think Some of the Dharma is a very important work. The Dharma Bums drastically changed my life and gave me a bitter epiphany shortly thereafter. I'd be anxious to read Gucci's paper about on the road. I cant not talk about the man for I write my own premise based on his conclusion. I have a working title for my novel that mentions his name and I havent set it in stone fearful of irreverance and of his own cult.

damn i loved on the road and dharma bums but in a way i like dharma bums better, maybe it was that goofy little monk guy he was awesome. gucci has a paper written about on the road.

whats it about?

Jack Kerouac is the man. And I'm friends with his reincarnation. His name is Jeff Novak.

i lived within walking distance of big sur; my decision to move to that part of the world was based partially on kerouac's big sur.

i have to admit that to me, the company kerouac kept was far more interesting than the man himself, especially neal cassidy.

I've read On the Road and Desolation Angels and Some of the Dharma and On top of an Underwood, but I have to say that my favorite is Big Sur.

Apparently he wrote it while completely drunk off his ass, but it is such a heartfelt beautiful book. It's very raw, and I love that.

Oh yeah! Read the biography by Barry Miles Jack Kerouac: King of the Beats. It peels back the surface so you can see the meat beneath the man. A1 sauce anyone?

Town & The City is really good too..... starts off real sugary, but it only makes the end so much more bitter.....

Just finished Dharma Bum.... Great read... Did it remind anyone else who read it of Fight Club in a weird kind of way?

There is an essay somewhere on the sight that compares Fight club to Hesses Siddharta, and I do find some things that seem to go together about buddhism and fight club. Dharma Bums is my favorite Kerouac and has a underlying bit to do with the novel Im working on.

I love Sal Paradise, absolutly love him, and on the road is my favorite, especially that one part in the book where he takes a nap under the tree outside of a diner, that just gives me a good feeling the way he describes it, and Big Sur is so beautiful i cant imagine an author not writing a book about it.

oh hell no. while big sur and the oranges of hieronymus bosch was fab, and henry miller is always a worthwile read, big sur by kerouac is by far the better book. no offense to your english teacher.

I've never read Kerouac, but only because my writing is most often compared to On The Road (but in a bad way, like "You ripped off Kerouac's On the Road"). I kinda sorta want to read it because I'm interested to see how similar our styles are, but my friends all tell me I shouldnt because I'd get pissed that there's someone out there that I sound like so I'd go and change what's (more or less) working for me. So I figure I'll keep on taking the shit from people who think I ripped him off, and I'll smile and it'll be okay and I'll just call it integrity or something. I might read Dharma Bums, though, because no one's ever compared any of my shit to that.

who cares if you rip off kerouac? its only a matter of opinion anyways..besides the town and the city was considered a huge thomas wolfe rip off.

Read Big Sur then, it's nothing like On The Road (in the way it's written)

Two words for you Kerouac fans. Herbert huncke. Kerouac was a poser and exploiter of art. He talked the talk while Huncke did the walk.

"Two reckless wanderers out to scale the heights of life... and love?" Do you have a different version than I read.... THis one sounds like a romance novel...
