Outta Touch - B. T.

Tuffy the Dump Truck may rarely increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The risk may be greater if you have heart disease or increased risk for heart disease (for example, due to smoking, family history of heart disease, or conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes), or with longer use. Tuffy should not be taken right before or after heart bypass surgery. Also, Tuffy may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. This effect can occur without warning symptoms at any time while taking Tuffy. Older adults may be at higher risk for this effect. (See also Precautions and Drug Interactions sections.) Stop taking Tuffy and get medical help right away if you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody or black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech. Ask your doctor if Tuffy is right for you.

It's a silly tradition if you consider how silly it is. Smile

I don't care who starts the book threads, as long as they're around to make them.

Also, the Cult has a hundred little traditions.

Okay? What feelings are being hurt here? If Derek wants to start a book thread every month, let him. I don't care, I'm still going to post on the book thread. What's the problem?

Me attempting to derail Tuffy's thread was stupid in the first place. I shouldn't have done that to him, since he made a genuine effort to start it.

Agreed. I still don't see what exactly is the problem. If it's important to Derek to make these threads, then great, let him make them. What's... the problem?

What, exactly? The fact that Tuffy started the thread, or the fact that I'm pushing for some kind of reasonable discourse about whatever the hell is going on?

Derek's been nothing but antagonistic towards me and certain others over the last few months, and without ONCE trying to explain himself. Pure passive aggressiveness. I called him out for it ONCE, and then let it slide. I don't have a problem with Derek at all, and if he wants to make a monthly book thread, then I'm all for it — even though, as I've said, I consider it a silly "tradition", or more precisely, I think calling it a tradition somewhat aggrandizes the thing.

I am perfectly willing to drop this, because it's just a slightly creepy thing to me and I stand to gain nothing from it. But please, if there's going to be antagonistic behavior, can't we at least stop with the subtle snooty remarks and just act like people who've known each other for years and can take a hit?

I fail to see antagonism.

The thread wasn't made for the month yet. People seem to like them. So I did this month's. Where is the big deal?

I'm not making anymore of this than what it is.

Oh, come on, Tuff. Don't play that card. It's like an unspoken thing. Derek makes the monthly reading thread. It's just how it is. No one needs to be told. You just work it out. And, I don't see the problem with it. I don't even know how long Derek's been doing them for. Like, before I was here. It's not a silly tradition. And, yeah, I think we need to consider the fact that sometimes something that means nothing to us can mean a shitload to someone else. The monthly reading threads are one of Derek's biggest contributions to our community. And why the fuck shouldn't they be his? He reads like a maniac. There's really no one better suited for the job. And, come on, in the states it's been May for how long now? You know Derek would've made the thread soon. You couldn't wait to tell everyone you're reading Out of Touch?

I'm not attacking you, Tuffy. I, too, just see it as unnecessarily antagonistic, knowing that there's been tenseness between you and Derek.

I made a monthly picture thread because there was also not one of those. Who owns that concept?

I don't think anyone does. I think it's almost a race to see who gets there first (which I let you guys win every time because I feel bad about living in the future and being able make it before everyone every time). It just seems silly to me for someone other than Derek to make this thread, you know?

Maybe it is a silly tradition. But Derek's a well-loved Cultie and obviously, if he's been doing this every month for however long (seriously, how long's it been?) it obviously means something to him. And, why the fuck should we take that from him?

Its obviously more than that to Derek. He's really upset about it. Upset enough to leave the cult. He feels like Tuffy did it to piss him off and I understand where he's coming from.

post removed.

No need to get pissy with me, I wasn't preaching about anything. I know you are aware of how upset he is, but I'm sure a lot of people aren't. I sent you a message saying I think he treated you harshly and I stand by that. I told him I thought you were trying not to piss people off, but he stayed mad regardless.

Usually these threads get pushed into being before the beginning of the month just because everyone is so eager to post in the new one. I awoke, well into the first of the month, to find that neither had been made. "My turn," I said to myself. "How thrilling." I made the picture thread first.

Now, I'm not participating in any further nonsense just because some unspecified person has a long-standing grudge against me for unknown reasons. If someone else wants to make a thread about books on a forum for books on this site about books and wants to call it "What I'm Reading In May", or whatever, that's their business. I refuse to compete for the affections of anyone. Cry. Stamp your foot. Be ever-so cross at me. I give a shit what anyone's opinion of me is in the actual world. Even less-so here.

Enjoy.

Just read the above posts.

Jesus Christ. Make a new thread already, Derek. Everyone here will still love you. I don't even dislike you even though you very publicly hate me.

Also. Alecia, I read that. It was riveting. Seeing where Ted, on death row, was still lying, especially to himself, about the things he did and did not do was truly fascinating.

Not that it's anyone's business, but Derek sent me a message elsewhere and didn't mention his reasons for leaving, and even if it were something that a one should be expected to intuit (newsflash: IT'S NOT), it's not my beef, so...

Some of you really get off on so much imagined controversy and strife and actually salivate at the opportunity to stir it up and get it going. It's pathetic, but that's just, like, my opinion, man. Y'all keep on keepin' on, knock your miserable selves out.

Anyway, yeah, that Bundy was fascinating and sorta brilliant (with words, at least) and crazier than a shit house rat.

I finished the first Harry Potter book and actually loved it. Despite having seen the film (it's the only Potter movie I've seen, so I'm more excited to read the other books), I still really, really enjoyed it. Probably picking up Chamber and Prisoner later today.

Reading Anthony Neil Smith's latest, Yellow Medicine, off my Kindle app on my phone (can't wait to get my Kindle for my birthday this month!).

My reading time is severely painfully limited. I'm much more likely to read the Greene than the Potter.

You Can Make Him Like You by Ben Tanzer

I’ve met Ben Tanzer…seen him give a reading, podcasted with the guy, and even had dinner with him. This was back in February when we were both in D.C. for AWP. Only recently have I completed a novel of his. It was one of those situations where you meet someone and hope you like the work because you like them as a person. I don’t care who you are, but writing positively about a book you didn’t dig is damn hard. Thank God Tanzer came through on his end.

You Can Make Him Like You
is one of those books that makes you consider adulthood. I say “one of those” like I’ve read more than just High Fidelity, but truth be told, these are the books I generally tend to avoid. Coming from a guy in his late twenties, a fear begins to settle in: of getting older and “losing your cool.” Things like having your own apartment or making a car payment don’t seem as concrete as having a mortgage or wife, or in this case, kids. There’s a definitive transition on the horizon and Tanzer is walking us through it, like that big brother we never had.

He illustrates this with Keith, a late-thirties social media guy that lives in Chicago. Republican. Married. Deep into sports. Drinker of gin & tonics. I think we’ve met some version of this guy before at one point or another, or at least seem him in passing at a bar. He’s an everyman, so to speak, but what I love about this book is how relatable this guy is made through a series of flaws and internal conflicts. He struggles with infidelity, with hanging on to those last shreds of youth, and making those trademark adult decisions of commitment. If you haven’t been there yet, just wait, because it’s coming. Tanzer paints an internal dialogue that’s so spot-on—especially in scenes of a “should I/shouldn’t I?” nature. You hardly realize it’s fiction. This, combined with the events of the McCain/Obama presidential election gives You Can Make Him Like You a deeper root in realism. One mention of “maverick” and it was practically 2008 for me again.

Bottom line: I don’t think I will ever read anything that captures the mind of the late-thirties American male the way this book did, this delicate tightrope of fearing what the future holds and hoping that the best days aren’t already gone. Tanzer weaves this all together in a very non-heavy-handed kind of way, disguised in the bullshit conversations you have with friends, the train of thought when temptation lurks, and the ticking time-bomb that is childbirth. We all have to grow up sometime, and whether it’s Tanzer simply recalling his experiences or something wholly conjured—I’m not sure I care. It works. I feel a little bit older, a little bit wiser, a little bit more prepared for the future…whatever it may hold for me.

See? I'm gonna Have to read that now. The other day I'm debating with myself, going back and forth about whether or not to sell some comics. I'm married and we're moving and we have bills ahead. But why should I have to? I want them. But then what am I thinking? Of course I should sell them -I'm married and we're moving with bills ahead. Fuck Green Lantern, you know?

It's May and I"m reading...

1. The Orange Eats Creeps by Grail Krilanovich (Same as last month -taking longer to finish than I'd like, and it's not even 200 pages. Has anyone else read this book?)
2. Cut Through The Bone by Ethel Rohan (Flash Fiction Collection -there was a good review on it from Richard Thomas at The Nervous Breakdon, so I checked it out and so far as good. It's different, which I tend to like).
3. Gulf Coast: Summer/Fall 2011 (There's an interesting conversation in here with Matt Bell and then of course some other good stuff).
4. Stranger Will by Caleb J. Ross (Well just as soon as it arrives, which should be within 24 to 48 hours per amazon tracking -reading this for the Book Club since there are no intensives going on).

And there's a few more but those are the big 4 that take priority.

Thumbs up indeed. I enjoyed it.

Next up for me is either The Orange Eats Creeps, or Slut Lullabies, can't make up my mind if I'm in the mood for a novel or some short stories.

I'm reading On The Road by Kerouac.

Not sure how I feel about it so far. I think I'm enjoying to story but every time I have to stop and then pick up again... I have to talk myself into it.

Very cool, then -looking forward to reading it. And go with Slut Lullabies, I'd say.

I think I've been waiting to meet someone like you -ahahaha -No seriously, it's one of my biggest embarrassments that I don't talk about when people get into book discussions. I couldn't finish On The Road. I Almost finished, which made it feel like even more of a defeat, but like you're saying, I had to force myself to get as far as I did.

I know it's a classic, and maybe I "don't get it" and this and that, but in the version I read, nothing much happened at all. I Liked the characters very much, the idea of story and them on the road and all, but after realizing that I was still forcing myself to get through it after 200 pages... I put it down, sorry to say. And I Did Want to like it, but... Maybe some day I'll try again.

Same thing with The Orange Eats Creeps. I think I'm forcing myself to like it and I'm having a difficult time getting through a book that's not even 200 pages. No one can deny the power of the language, and Maybe the possible genius behind it, but I need more than that. I don't know. I'll have more on it when I actually finish which I'm determined to do -about 60 more pages.
